현대자동차그룹이 탈북민·북한이탈주민 가정 등 이른바 ‘북한 배경 학생’을 위한 새 학교 건립을 지원한다. 단순히 건물을 지어주는 데 그치지 않고 기초 학습과 진로 교육, 대학 등록금과 생활비까지 책임지는 장기 인재 육성 사업이다. 기업과 정부, 교육 당국이 함께 북한 배경 청소년의 한국 사회 정착을 돕는 민관 협력 모델이라는 점에서 의미가 있다.

현대차그룹은 24일 서울 강서구 여명학교에서 통일부, 서울시교육청과 ‘여명학교 학교 건물 건립을 위한 업무협약’을 체결했다고 밝혔다. 여명학교는 언어와 문화 차이로 일반 학교 적응에 어려움을 겪는 북한 배경 학생을 위한 중·고교 과정 대안학교다. 2004년 서울 봉천동에서 문을 열어 2010년 정규 학력을 인정받았지만, 그동안 자체 학교 건물 없이 여러 공간을 옮겨 다녀야 했다. 2023년부터는 폐교한 염강초등학교 건물을 임시로 사용해왔으나, 사용 기한이 내년 2월 끝나면서 다시 거처를 구해야 할 처지였다.

이번 협약에 따라 서울시교육청은 여명학교가 현재 사용 중인 염강초 폐교 부지를 새 학교 건립 용도로 무상 제공한다. 통일부는 건립 과정에 필요한 행정 절차와 법령 개선을 지원하고, 여명학교는 학교 건립과 운영을 맡는다. 현대차그룹은 건축 기금을 후원한다.

현대차그룹은 학교가 완공된 뒤에도 지원을 이어가기로 했다. 현대차그룹은 대학생 교육봉사단 ‘H-점프스쿨’ 멘토 20명을 투입해 매주 두 차례 영어·수학·과학을 가르칠 예정이다. 겨울방학에는 진로 탐색 프로그램과 직무 특강을 열고, 졸업생과 재학생을 연결하는 공동체도 만든다. 대학에 진학한 우수 졸업생에게는 현대차 정몽구재단 장학 사업을 통해 등록금과 생활비를 지원한다.

Hyundai Motor Group is supporting the construction of a new school for so-called “students with North Korean backgrounds,” including North Korean defectors and North Korean refugees households. This is a long-term talent development initiative that goes beyond simply building a facility, covering foundational education, career guidance, and even university tuition and living expenses. It holds significance as a public-private partnership model where businesses, the government, and educational authorities collaborate to help North Korean-background youth integrate into South Korean society.

Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 24th that it signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Unification and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education at Yeomyeong School in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, to build a new school building. Yeomyeong School is an alternative middle and high school for North Korean-background students who struggle to adapt to general schools due to language and cultural differences. Established in 2004 in Seoul’s Bongcheon-dong, it gained official academic recognition in 2010 but has had to relocate between various spaces without its own building. Since 2023, it has temporarily used the closed Yeomgang Elementary School building, but with the usage period ending in February 2027, the school faced the need to find a new location.

Under this agreement, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will provide the site of the closed Yeomgang Elementary School, currently used by Yeomyeong School, free of charge for the new school construction. The Ministry of Unification will support administrative procedures and legal improvements required for the construction process, while Yeomyeong School will oversee the construction and operation. Hyundai Motor Group will sponsor the construction funds.

Hyundai Motor Group will continue its support even after the school’s completion. It plans to deploy 20 mentors from its university student volunteer group, “H-Jump School,” to teach English, math, and science twice weekly. During winter vacations, it will host career exploration programs and job-related lectures, and create a community connecting graduates and current students. For outstanding graduates entering university, tuition and living expenses will be supported through the Hyundai Motor Group Chung Mong-koo Foundation’s scholarship program.
