In fact, over half of the world's millions of species of plants and animals live in the
rainforest. Lately, people have been burning and cutting down the trees in a rainforest.
so, I'm going to talk about the rainforest.
RAINFOREST IS MADE UP THREE LAYERS.
A tropical rainforest is made up of three layers of life. The forest floor the under layer
and the treetop layer. The forest floor is the bottom layer of the rainforest. The under
layer is made up of the young trees and plants that are under the treetops. The treetop
layer is the rainforest's green ceiling.
WHY ARE THE RAINFORESTS IN TROUBLE?
Farming is a big reason why some rainforests are disappearing. The soil in the
rainforests is not very good for growing crops year after year. So farmers have to keep
moving to new areas. Every time they do this, they destroy more of the rainforests.
Ranching is another reason, Ranchers clear away large areas of rainforests to make
pastures. Because, these pastures don't cost much money. They can do whatever they
want to do. For example, They feed their cattle, then they can sell their cattle at low
prices. Big fast-food chains buy this cheap beef, So they can sell their hamburgers at
low prices.
Logging destroys a lot of rainforest land. Logging companies cut down thousands of
trees every day.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF ALL RAINFOREST TREES ARE CUT DOWN OR
BURNED?
First of all, the world's climate will become much hotter. Trees take carbon dioxide
out to the air and put back fresh oxygen. Without the rainforests, the air will fill up
with more and more carbon dioxide. As a result, the weather will be hotter. You call
this " the greenhouse effect "
In addition, floods will be more common. Rainforest trees push their roots deep into the
soil. Even there are storms, the roots hold the soil in place. The soil catches the
rainwater, which then runs off slowly without trees, the soil is washed away by storms,
making it much easier for floods to occur.
Rainforests used to cover as much as 14% of the Earth's land. Today they cover less
than 6%. In fact, rainforests are disappearing at a frightening speed. It will all be gone
by the time our children grow up unless we save them.
