The Sea-Voyage

MANY a day and night my bark stood ready laden;
Waiting fav'ring winds, I sat with true friends round me,
Pledging me to patience and to courage,
In the haven.

바다 여행

수 많은 날과 밤 나의 배는 기다리며 앉아 있었네
순조로운 바람이 불 때까지,
주변의 진정한 친구들과 함께 앉아 있네,
용기와 인내를 요구하며,
항구에서

And they spoke thus with impatience twofold:
"Gladly pray we for thy rapid passage,
Gladly for thy happy voyage; fortune
In the distant world is waiting for thee,
In our arms thoult find thy prize, and love too,
When returning."

그들이 두 배로 성급하게 말하기를:
"네가 빨리 도착하길 기꺼이 기도하며
즐거운 여행이 되기를 기꺼이 기도한다;
먼 그곳에선 너를 위해 부귀가 기다리며
돌아올 때엔 우리 품에서 너를 위한 사랑과 상이 기다릴 것이다."

And when morning came, arose an uproar,
And the sailors' joyous shouts awoke us;
All was stirring, all was living, moving,
Bent on sailing with the first kind zephyr.

그리고 아침이 밝고 소란스러워졌네
선원들의 즐거운 고함소리가 우리를 깨웠네
모든 것이 붐비고 활발해지고 움직이게 되었네
고마운 첫 서풍 때문에 항해에 대한 열정으로

And the sails soon in the breeze are swelling,
And the sun with fiery love invites us;
Fill'd the sails are, clouds on high are floating,
On the shore each friend exulting raises
Songs of hope, in giddy joy expecting
Joy the voyage through, as on the morn of sailing,
And the earliest starry nights so radiant.

돛이 바람에 부풀어 오르고
타오르는 사랑으로 태양이 우리를 초대하네
높이 떠가는 구름으로 돛이 가득차며
해안의 친구들은 환호성을 부르고
기쁨에 가득차 희망을 부르네, 
출항하는 날처럼 즐거운 항해가 되도록
별이 가득한 밤들이 찬란하도록

But by God-sent changing winds ere long he's driven
Sideways from the course he had intended,
And he feigns as though he would surrender,
While he gently striveth to outwit them,

그러나 머지 않아 신의 의지로 바람은 바뀌고
그가 의도했던 방향으로부터 밀리게 되었네
마치 항복할 것처럼 가장하고
그 사이 조심히 허를 찌르려고 노력하네

To his goal, e'en when thus press'd, still faithful.
But from out the damp grey distance rising,
Softly now the storm proclaims its advent,
Presseth down each bird upon the waters,
Presseth down the throbbing hearts of mortals.
And it cometh. At its stubborn fury,
Wisely ev'ry sail the seaman striketh;
With the anguish-laden ball are sporting
Wind and water.

압박에도 불구하고 그는 신념을 지키며 목표를 향해 나아가네

그러나 이제는 먼 곳 회색의 어두움에서
조심스럽게 폭풍이 출현을 알려오네
물 위의 모든 새를 억누르며
인간의 두근거리는 심장을 억누르며 오지만
폭풍의 집요한 분노를 보고
선원이 모든 돛을 현명하게 내리고
격정으로 휩싸인 공은 바람과 물을 즐긴다.

And on yonder shore are gather'd standing,
Friends and lovers, trembling for the bold one:
"Why, alas, remain'd he here not with us!
Ah, the tempest! Cast away by fortune!
Must the good one perish in this fashion?
Might not he perchance.... Ye great immortals!"

그리고 저쪽 해변에는 친구들와 연인들이 모여 서
용감한 그를 위해 떨고 있네:
"아아 왜 우리와 함께 남지 않았는가!
아아 폭풍우여! 운명으로 난파되네!
이런 식으로 그 좋은 사람이 죽어야 하는가?
그래도 살 기회가 있지 않겠는가... 위대한 불사신들이여!"

Yet he, like a man, stands by his rudder;
With the bark are sporting wind and water,
Wind and water sport not with his bosom:
On the fierce deep looks he, as a master,--
In his gods, or shipwreck'd, or safe landed,
Trusting ever.

그래도 그는 진정한 남자로 키 옆에 서서
배와 함께 바람과 물을 즐기지만
물과 바람은 그의 가슴에 닿지를 못하네
사나운 수심에서 그는 선장으로서
난파되거나 안전하게 배를 대거나
언제나처럼 그의 신을 믿는다.
