Il ne veut pas manger, mais la femme revient près de lui pour lui faire comprendre qu’il faut manger. Elle regarde la petite qui s’est endormie. Il voit le regard de la femme sur l’enfant. Il se dit qu’elle a raison. Il se dit qu’il faut qu’il mange, qu’il prenne des forces, pour l’enfant sinon pour lui.

따뜻한 온기가 감도는 방에 이르자 여인은 노인에게 자리에 앉으라고 권했다. 테이블과 의자가 빼곡하게 놓인 아주 넓은 방이었다. 그녀는 잠시 노인을 두고 나가더니 배에서 노인을 부축했던 여인과 들어와 자리에 앉았다. 수프를 먹으라고 챙겨주는데 노인은 영 생각이 없다. 안내해준 여인이 노인에게 다가와 한 술이라도 뜨라고 권하며 잠들어 있는 어린 손녀를 쳐다봤다. 손녀를 바라보는 그 눈길을 읽은 노인은 그녀가 옳다고, 먹어야 한다고, 힘을 내야 한다고, 손녀를 위해서도 자신을 위해서도 먹어야 한다고 마음을 다잡았다.

On reaching a room that is pleasantly warm, the woman shows him to a seat. She makes him sit down. There are some tables, some chairs. It is very big. La soupe est comme l’air de la ville qu’il a respiré en descendant du bateau. Elle n’a pas vraiment d’odeur, pas vraiment de goût. Il n’y reconnaît rien. Il n’y trouve pas le délicieux picotement de la citronnelle, la douceur de la coriandre fraîche, la suavité des tripes cuites. La soupe entre dans sa bouche et dans son corps, et c’est soudain tout l’inconnu de sa vie nouvelle qui vient en lui.

수프의 맛이 배에서 내리며 맡았던 이 도시의 냄새 같다고 노인은 생각했다. 무어라 할 향기도 맛도 없는 맛. 느낄 수가 없었다. 톡 쏘는 레몬의 상큼한 맛과 신선한 코리앤더의 향기, 잘 익힌 내장 요리의 깊은 향미 같은 것은 찾으려야 찾을 수가 없었다. 그저 입에 넣어 꿀꺽 삼키면 목을 지나 배로 넘어가는 액체일 뿐, 생판 모르는 무언가가 그의 속을 타고 들어가는 느낌이었다.

The soup is like the air of the city that he breathed in as he left the ship. It does not really have any smell, not really any taste. There is nothing familiar about it. There is none of the delicious tang of lemongrass, the sweetness of fresh coriander, the smoothness of cooked tripe. The soup enters his mouth and passes into his body, and he is suddenly filled with all the strangeness of his new life.

Le soir, la femme conduit Monsieur Linh et l’enfant dans un dortoir. L’endroit est propre et spacieux. Deux familles de réfugiés y sont déjà installées depuis trois semaines. Elles ont pris leurs habitudes et leurs aises. Elles se connaissent pour être originaires de la même province du sud. Ensemble, elles ont fui, dérivé longtemps sur une épave, avant d’être recueillies à bord d’un vrai bateau. Il y a deux hommes, jeunes. L’un a une femme, l’autre, deux. Les enfants au nombre de onze sont bruyants et joyeux.

저녁 무렵, 여인은 무슈 린과 아기를 합숙소로 데리고 갔다. 깨끗하고 널찍한 곳이었다. 먼저 피난 온 다른 두 가족이 3주 전부터 들어와 살고 있었는데 그들은 벌써 이곳에서 어느 정도의 편안함과 익숙함을 찾은 듯 보였다. 남부의 같은 동네에서 살았던 이 두 가족은 함께 도망쳐 나와 바다에서 한참을 표류하다가 가까스로 큰 배에 구출되어 이곳까지 오게 되었다고 했다. 젊은 남자 둘이 있었는데 한 사람은 부인이 한 명, 다른 한 사람은 부인이 두 명이었고, 열한 명이나 되는 아이들까지 한 방에 소란스럽게 북적이고 있었다.

In the evening, the woman takes Monsieur Linh and the child to a dormitory. The place is clean and spacious. Two families of refugees have already been living there for three weeks. They have made themselves comfortable and at home. They knew one another because both families came from the same southern province. They fled together, drifting for a long time on the wreckage of a boat, before being hoisted aboard a real ship. There are two men, both young. One of them has one wife, the other has two. The eleven children are noisy and happy.

Malgré tout, ils se forcent à lui faire bon accueil, s’inclinent devant lui, l’appellent Oncle, comme c’est la coutume. Les enfants veulent prendre la petite Sang diû dans leurs bras, mais il leur dit d’une voix calme qu’il n’y tient pas. Il la garde contre lui. Les enfants haussent les épaules. Les trois femmes chuchotent, puis se détournent. Les deux hommes se rassoient dans un angle et reprennent leur partie de mah-jong.

무슈 린이 방에 들어선 순간 이들 가족 모두는 그가 훼방꾼이라도 되는 듯이 바라봤다. 팔에 안긴 아기에게도 놀라는 눈빛과 적의 어린 눈길을 섞어 보냈다. 무슈 린은 자신이 무언가를 크게 방해했구나 하는 느낌이 들었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그들은 애써 노인을 환영해주었다. 그들의 관습대로 예의를 갖춰 '아저씨'라고 부르면서 모두 고개 숙여 인사했다. 아이들은 상디유를 안아보고 싶어했지만, 노인이 안 된다며 오히려 아기를 가슴 쪽으로 더 바짝 당겨 안자 어이가 없다는 듯 어깨를 씰룩거렸다. 여인 셋은 자기들끼리 뭐라고 수군거리더니 등을 돌렸고, 남자 둘은 이제껏 하던 대로 다시 마주 앉아 마작을 시작했다.

They all look at the old man as if he is a nuisance, and they stare in astonishment, and with slight hostility, at the baby he is carrying. Monsieur Linh feels as if he is disturbing them. Nevertheless, they make an effort to welcome him and they bow to him, calling him “Uncle”, as is their custom. The children want to take little Sang diû in their arms, but he tells them calmly that he will not allow it. He presses her to him. The children shrug. The three women whisper to one another, then they turn away. The two men sit down again in a corner and get on with their game of mah-jong.
