Obtaining and preparing to fire the matchlock
I had kept my eye out for an affordable matchlock for a while, and finally came across a Canadian outfit that sells them without the touchhole drilled and will ship those to the US as such allowing it to be classified as a “decorator item.”
The item arrived after a few weeks with a proud “Made in Canada” tag attached. It was a very nice piece, however the screw that tightens the jaws of the dog was bent. I wrote the company for a replacement, but have not received it yet, however I was able to fit a very nice decorator thumbscrew with matching threads that looks fine.
I was told the breechplug was fairly deep on the muskets, and should be measured before drilling the touchhole. Although it was suggested that a 3/32ths hole be used, I checked one of my flintlocks and decided to start with a slightly smaller hole, 5/64ths, knowing that the hole could be made larger, but not smaller.
I took the musket apart and noted that barrel was marked “Made in India.” I know that India used to make very serviceable Brown Bess musket replicas, and at 75 caliber I think this was probably originally a barrel made for a Brown Bess replica, and modified for the matchlock. So, not completely “Made in Canada”!
(Barrel Markings)
I measured the depth of the barrel with a wooden dowel, and then measured down the outside, marking on the outside of the barrel where the end of the breech plug was, which was just about half-way across the priming pan. This being a critical drill, I measured several times to make sure I had the location correct.
I wanted the top of the touchhole just at the top of the pan, and so marked a starting point with a punch. I used a portable drill press to make the hole.
(Drilling the
Touchhole)
It went through cleanly to my delight but I hadn’t quite calculated the diameter of the hole properly with the top of the pan, and was disappointed to see that the hole was about a 24th of an inch lower than I wanted. Subsequent firing of the gun showed that this was not a problem at all.
Slow Match
I did some research in slow match, and found that while I couldn’t find a source for buying it outright, it could be made fairly easily. Potassium Nitrate can be bough by the pound pretty cheaply from e-bay or one of many on-line sources, and I had some from a kit I use to make Sharp’s cartridges. I supplemented my stash with an extra pound bought on ebay, and so I am sure I am now on some right-wing watch list the government maintains.
Next I had to find suitable rope or cord. I tried what I though was all-cotton clothesline, however burn tests revealed that it had an artificial core, and that burned poorly. The selection of ropes at the handful of hardware stores I looked at was pretty poor, and I finally settled on 1/4 inch manilla rope. This was adequate, but I think pure braided cotton or hemp would have worked much better.
Potassium nitrate dissolves fairly easily. The idea here, though is NOT to saturate the rope to the maximum amount, because too much KNO3 will make the match burn too quickly. The ideal burn rate is about a foot an hour. I didn’t do enough experimentation to come up with a “ideal” formula, but, following general guidelines from the sources on the Internet I dissolved the KNO3 in room-temperature water, and soaked the rope for about an hour.
I let the rope dry FLAT (to avoid concentrations of chemicals at the ends which would happen in the rope were hung to dry) and clipped off the ends that became frayed by the soaking. The final product had expanded to about 3/8th in diameter, and I adjusted the dog on the matchlock so that it would be easy to insert, and would be held fairly tightly.
An alternative to making my own slow match would be to buy cannon fuse sold by Dixie Gunworks, but that looked a little too narrow. However it was cheap enough that I bought a few pieces to use as a replacement if my manufactured product didn’t work.

Musket Rest
The next step was the musket rest. I examined many period woodcuts and plates of musketeers with musket rests and came to the conclusion that an oarlock was very similar in size and shape to the top of the original rests, and was able to pick up one of those at a local flea market. I was not able to get a regular 1"- 1 1/4" dowel of the proper length to use as the pole, and settled for a closet pole, which was heavier and thicker than I would have liked, but would do under the circumstances.
I drilled a hole slightly smaller than the shaft of the oarlock and wrapped the end of the pole tightly with clothesline rope to keep it from splitting, and then drove the oarlock into the end. I then wrapped the clothesline with a piece of leather and tightened it with wet leather lace that would dry snugly. I tapered the bottom of the pole slightly and drove in a 16d nail that was sticking out about 4 inches - and this would allow me to stick the pole into the ground. The outside of the pole got a coat of tung oil, and while not perfect, certainly serviceable for a weekend put-together.

Musketeer Kit
While I had a decent revolutionary war militia kit that might serve at a basic uniform, I examined many plates and paintings of the period and liked the look of the morion comb helmet worn by some musketeers. While the morion comb is associated with the Spanish Conquistador it was also a fairly popular helmet in various other armies of the time, and samples of that type of helmet have been excavated from the earliest American colonies.
I was fortunate that I came across a nice replica for about $40.
(Replica Morian Comb Helmet)
However the helmet not have a lining, and the metal helmet did not fit well loosely on the head. I looked at some pictures of helmet relics and I was able to see that the patter of rivets seen around the rim of that helmet were used to hold a leather liner.
I bought a couple of very worn leather belts from Goodwill, and with leather rivets fashioned a liner from these. I am pressed for work space, so I banged the rivet onto the liner on my front step, and I am sure that the neighbors must have concluded I have some kind of S&M leather thing going on. Oh, well, I’ve been single for so long I think they all figure I’m just gay anyway.
(Helmet Liner)
After a fair amount of frustrating fitting trial and error I was able to riveted the liner into the helmet so it fit snugly and evenly. While there are some images of musketeers with helmets, I did notice that most period illustrations of musketeers show them with a large floppy hat instead.
I looked online for an inexpensive hat of that type, however, the choices were campy “musketeer costume” hats, or very expensive authentic-type replicas. After searching “big floppy hats” I came across on ebay “Big Floppy Diva Hats” that might fit the bill, and these were cheap, too.
(Luxury Divas, Limited.)
I bought one, and soon picked up a package from the post office from “Luxury Divas, Limited.” The long look I received from the postal clerk could only be a result of adding to my increasing reputation. (I now get regular catalogs from this outfit.)
The hat was better than the costume hats, but was still a little too floppy. I got some cowboy hat stiffener and some ostrich plumes, and ended up with a workable discount musketeer hat.
