Next, we're going to examine the difficulties of defining religion.
As I told you before, we will discuss it only briefly and superficailly in this class.
Let me tell you, religion is hard to define.
Religion has been defined in various ways.
If I had more time, I would have asked each of you, "What's your definition of religion?"
Think about it to yourself.
Try to define religion in your mind.
What is religion? And think about whether you can explain it in an academic way.
This was difficult from the beginning.
There was a scholar who insisted that we should not define religion at all.
He is Wilfred Cantwell Smith, one of three great scholars in religious studies in the late 20th century. In his book, The Meaning and End of Religion, he wrote the definition of religion is a difficult problem.
There are too many and various religious phenomena.
The meaning of religion has changed dramatically over the course of time.
At first, there was no need for the word 'religion' itself.
In the early stages of life, though primitive people lived a religious life, performed religious activities, and recited religious myths, they did not need the concept of religion.
Right?
Historically, the concept of religion came out when various cultures clashed.
In the Roman era, as many people came to meet each other in the Roman Empire,
the term religio began to be used.
This term is used in various ways.
Cantwell Smith explained it so well:
Religion may sometimes mean 'piety' and, at other times, it may mean 'courtesy towards God.' It was used differently.
As early Christianity expanded, the term religio was in a way similar to how we use the term 'religion' today. But when Christianity was universalized, and no other religions were found to be in the same category, the word was not used at all.
It doesn't need to be used.
It was used only when referring to other religions.
It didn't need to be used in Europe, where there were almost no other religions.
Likewise, the word "sects" or "schools" were used in China or in East Asia to designate religious communities, in general, only when there are many religions and we needed to differentiate between them.
Right?
When Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism were named the 'Three Schools' by Choi Chiweon, this term was used for differentiating.
There is no need for a name when there is only one religion, one tradition.
It's hard to know how extensively the term religio is used in various contexts, so it's hard to make comprehensive and categorical definitions.
When talking about Christianity, there are some ministers who say that "Christianity is not a religion."
When they say that "Christianity is not a religion", they are talking about 'religion' in human terms. So "Christianity is not a religion, but a way of life where God directly intervenes. Christianity is a direct interaction with God".
Other ministers will say that Christianity is the "true religion."
In this way, the concept of religion is used very differently.
Right?
Completely different.
We sometimes use 'religion' to refer to individual religions such as Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, or Islam.
Other times, we use the same term to refer to a general concept that includes all of these.
Right?
The term "religion" is very complex.
It is very difficult to define comprehensively.
Wilfred Cantwell Smith said in 1962, in a book called, The Meaning and End of Religion, "In the next 25 years, no one will use the term "religion."
He was a famous scholar and professor of Harvard University. But not everything he says is correct.
The term is still being used.
Isn't it?
He said it with so much confidence, but still today, "religion" is still being used, and books and other cultural phenomena on religion continue to exist.
He suggested not to use "religion" but to use "faith" as every religion has a kind of faith. He wanted to use the term "cumulative tradition" for the other parts that are not related to the faith.
So, instead of Christianity, "Christian tradition" should be used, according to Smith.
I said before that it is difficult to define religion, but I've written down a few famous definitions of religion.
Edward Burnett Tylor is regarded as the father of anthropology.
He wrote a very famous book, titled Primitive Culture, in 1871.
He was a self-taught scholar who became the first anthropologist and a professor of anthropology at the Oxford University in England.
If this is something that sounds interesting to you, you should attend my course called 'The Development of Religious Studies.'
You can learn about this in that course.
We won't talk about those kinds of details here.
Let's talk about Edward Burnett Tylor's definition of religion.
You may have learned of the term 'animism' from history textbooks in high school; it was Tylor who introduced the theory of Animism.
Tylor spoke about the theory of animism and explained religion as "the belief in spiritual beings."
He regarded religion as just belief.
Belief in spiritual beings or gods. He used the word "spirit" here.
Belief in spirits.
But can we just define religion only with belief?
Does religion equal belief?
It's not enough.
Christians in Europe in the Middle Ages might not have thoughth about what they believe in, but just acted how they were accustomed to in their culture.
Or for Muslims, religious activities are really important factors. To be identified as Muslims, they must perform certain religious activities.
The 'Five Pillars' of Islam are five basic acts that are considered mandatory by adherents.
Without those acts, mere faith is not enough.
If you ask a Catholic, "Can I just believe that my sin will be forgiven? Or do I absolutely have to go to a priest and confess?" -- they will surely tell you that you have to act.
They will say that faith is not enough.
Belief, faith, these can't be the only things that make up religion.
Right?
You cannot define religion only with some parts of the whole.
Friedrich Max Müller, one of the fathers of religious studies, has a famous definition.
Religion is "the perception of the infinite."
People perceive the infinite.
He said religion consists of the perception of the infinite and, under such manifestations, is able to influence the moral character of man.
That is what Max Müller said. But this too is not satisfactory.
The infinite?
This is regarded as one of the attributes of the Judeo-Christian God.
There can be somewhat finite deities like ancestor spirits or finite sacred beings.
Do we have to perceive the infinite to be religion?
It's a very Christian idea.
Morality?
Morality from whose stance?
To him, moral standards are also of a Western perspective.
So for certain non-Western, or so-called "primitive" cultures, this standard does not fit.
The word 'primitive' is a rather of value-laden term. When Western people encountered so-called "primitive" cultures, they would say, "there is no religion in this culture," because they could not find something that met their standard.
Paul Tillich, one of the prominent Christian theologians of the 20th-century, defined religion as "direction or movement toward the ultimate concern."
This too is a very Christian concept.
Guys, Karl Marx talked about religion.
He said, people are often comforted by religion.
And he also said religion makes people addicted and dependent on it, rendering them helpless.
"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature."
He also said that religion is "the opium of the people".
In some aspects, he pointed out one of the important functions of religion.
It's true that religion functions to comfort people.
But you can't explain religion with just that.
Freud said that religion is used to help relieve people of their psychological problems.
But he also only mentioned one aspect of religion.
We need to understand that we cannot explain religion with this alone.
So in conclusion, definitions that highlight only certain features of religion are not valid.
Religion cannot be defined by just one or two features. And if the definition is mainly focused on concepts like the infinite or a particular feature, that definition cannot be used academically.
To be an academic definition, it needs to be able to be applied to any culture, any situation, but these are not.
These have problems.
So we have to present definitions that go beyond that, and there are a few more complex definitions of religion.
First, let's take a look at Émile Durkheim, who is often considered the father of sociology.
Durkheim is a scholar who gave a complex definition of religion. His book, Les formes élémentaires de la vie religieuse, was translated as The Elementary Forms of Religious Life in the Korean language. But it seems it would be better if we translate it as "The Basic Forms of Religious Life."
This book was published in 1912. Durkheim, who is called the father of sociology, came up with a definition of religion more than 100 years ago, that is still being used today.
Let's take a look at his definition of religion.
As a sociologist, he defined sacred things as those isolated and protected by powerful interdictions from the society because they are important.
For example, there was a place "Sodo" in the Samhan period, in ancient Korea. Sodo was a place you could not enter without permission. It was something sacred.
What people cannot do or cannot control because of the social consensus is considered 'sacred.'
The first element of religion is now mentioned. It's related to the ways in which sacred things are isolated and prohibited.
It's the belief in sacred things.
What else did he add?
Practices.
He also added community.
These systems unite followers in the community.
The three important elements of religion are included in his definition.
He mentioned beliefs, practices and a moral community, and he regarded the object of beliefs as sacred things.
Throughout this book, Durkheim enthusiastically discussed why sacred things are socially important. If we consider sacred things to be those things that people pursue personally, it becomes an important definition of religion that can still be used now.
So do you remember the book 1984 by George Orwell? The book you had to read in order to get into SNU?
Did you forget everything after you entered the university? The College of Humanities?
In Orwell's book, because the party (the community) is so important, it creates a sacred entity called "Big Brother."
"Big Brother" is the entity that the community believes to be important, so it is isolated, prohibited, and regarded as really sacred. But one of the important themes of Orwell's 1984 is that the desire and orientation of the humans cannot be satisfied by this sacred entity representing the community.
So the main character Winston is dying in pursuit of beauty, truth and love regardless of the community.
Durkheim's definition is very efficient and important in itself. But only if it does not limit the definition to the level of society. In other words, if we can include the desire and orientation of humans, this definition can be more applicable even today.
In addition to these, I have introduced a few more definitions of religion in the textbook.
I cannot go through all of them during class, so you might ask, "Professor, are there any more complex definitions of religion being discussed and defined these days?"
Yes, there are.
For these, please refer to the book and study more on your own.
If we look into the major elements that make up religion, then we can draw the outline of it even though we cannot define it exactly.
Ninian Smart suggested six dimensions to outline the scope of the religion.
The six dimensions of religion.
He added one more dimension later on, in his old age.
I introduced the basic six dimensions here in this book.
First, religions have a doctrinal or philosophical dimension.
Doctrine?
It is a set of principles or beliefs that a religion is trying to convey.
It is a doctrine, or it can be a philosophy if we delve deeper.
Every religion has storytelling.
A narrative and mythical dimension.
An ethical and legal dimension that rules human behavior.
And a ritual or practical dimension.
The practical dimension includes forms and orders of ceremonies. And religion also has an empirical and emotional dimension.
Religion has social and organizational dimensions, as Durkheim put a great importance on religion with respect to the community.
These are the six dimensions of religion that delineate the range of religion.
It's very important to be aware of these six dimensions. Only when you understand these six elements to some extent can you understand whether something has religious symbolism or which dimension is emphasized in a religious symbol.
And if you don't take into account the elements of religion from a balanced perspective, you might come up with the wrong answer when you are trying to decide whether something is religious or not.
You might get the wrong answer.
So you need to understand various elements of religion.
For example, if you find something is in the faith-related dimension, you should not rush to a conclusion that this something is religious.
Right?
Just one element of religion does not ensure that it is religious.
You should consider various dimensions of religions at the same time from a balanced perspective.
It's also important not to accept a specific definition of religion but to understand various properties of religion comprehensively.
This is a necessary step in understanding and identify the meanings of religious symbols.
I'm sorry to go over this essential part so quickly, but I think it would be better to breeze through the conceptual part so that you don't fall asleep.
six dimensions of religion이라고 하는 거예요.
