We would like to announce an important safety guideline regarding the use of climbing equipment.
A climbing harness is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) designed to protect a climber’s life in the event of a fall.
According to manufacturer guidelines, harnesses must be retired after a certain period of time regardless of their external appearance.
For example, major equipment manufacturers such as Petzl and Black Diamond provide the following general lifespan guidelines:
Maximum 10 years from the date of manufacture
Equipment that has exceeded these periods is recommended to be retired and properly discarded.
In particular, textile-based equipment such as harnesses may appear intact externally, but their internal strength can deteriorate over time due to factors such as UV exposure, moisture, temperature changes, and repeated loading.
Important Notice:
The following practices involving expired or retired climbing harnesses are not appropriate from a safety perspective and should be avoided:
For beginners who may have limited knowledge about climbing equipment, the judgment of the person providing the gear can easily become their perceived safety standard. For this reason, extra care and responsibility in equipment management are essential.
Recommendations:
Members are kindly asked to consider the following:
Our club’s safety standard is based not on “it still looks fine,” but on whether it meets objective safety criteria.
Safety is not proven by experience alone—
it is maintained by adhering to established principles.
For the safety of all members during training and climbing activities, we ask everyone to exercise care and responsibility in the use of climbing equipment.
Thank you.
