why would you do to earn money if you owe you had was $5 and 2 hours this is a segment I gave students in one of my classes at Stanford University age of 14 teams received on developed with these five dollars of sitting funding and was told they could spend as much time as they wanted planning however once they cracked open the envelope they had to hours to generate as much money as possible I give them from Wednesday afternoon until Sunday evening then on Sunday evening with each team had to spend me one side describing what they had done and on Monday afternoon the class that they were eating courage to be enterpreneurial by identifying opportunities challenging assumption Liberate the limit resource they have and by being creative what would you do if you were given this challenge when I ask these questions to most groups someone usually shout out go to Las Vegas or buy a lottery ticket this gets a big laughs in return for a small chance at learning I'll be a word the next most common suggestion is to set up a car wash or lemonade stand using the $5 to purchase the 13th murderers this is a fine option for those interested in earning of few extra dollars of spending money into hours but most of my students mentally found a way to move far beyond the standard responses they took seriously the challenge to question traditional assumptions exposing a wealth of possibilities in order to create as much value as possible how did they do this here's a clue the teams that made the most money didn't use the $5 at all they realize that focusing on the money actually friends that problem way to tightly they understood that $5 is essentially nothing and decide to interpret the problem or delete what can we do to make money if we start with holy nothing they ramped up there of pervasion skills trapped into their talents and elect their gravity either gravity to identify problems in their midst problems they experience it or notice others experiencing problems they might have seen before but has never told to solve this problems were negging but not necessarily at the Forefront of anyone might buy unnecess on near thing this problems and then walking to solve them the winning team spout in over $600 and the average return on the $5 Investments was 4,000% if you take into account the money of the teams didn't use the fonts at all then they are financing return to work in Phoenix so what did they do all of the teams were remarkably inventive one group identified a problem command in a lot of college towns to frustratingly long lines at popular restaurants on Sunday Saturday night the team decided to help those people who didn't want to wait in life they paired off and booked reservations at several restaurants as the times for their reservation approaches they sold each reservation for up to $20 to customers who were happy to avoid a long wait as the evening were on they made several interesting observations first they realize that the female students were better at selling the reservations then the male students probably because customers were more comfortable being approached by the young woman they are just did their plans so that the male students run around town marketing reservations at a different restaurant while the females students sold those places in life they also learned that the entire operation those hope the best at restaurants that use vibrating paper pages to Art customer spend their table is ready physically swapping paper made customer feel as though they were receiving something tangible for their money they were more comfortable hanging over there Bunny and pagers in exchange for the new pager this has an additional bonus time team could then sell the newly acquired pager as the later reservation time through near another team took on even simpler approach they set up a stand in front of the Student Union they offered to measure bicycle tire place for free if the tires needed filling they added air for one barrel at first days till they were taking on advantage of their fellow student who could easily go to a nearly gas station to have their tires filled but after their first few customers the students realized that the bicycling they were incorrectly grateful even though the cyclists could get there in tires filled for free near me and the task was easy for the student to perform they soon realized that they were providing a convenient and valuable service in fact halfway so the two-hour parrot the team stopped asking for us specific payments and requested donation is that their income so reading they made much more when their customers were with respiration for a free service then when asked to pay a fixed price for this team as well as for the team marketing restaurants reservations experimenting along the way paid of the interruptive process was more changes are made in response to customer feedback load them to optimize their strategy on the Fly each of these projects about in a few hundred dollars and their fellow classmates were duly impressed however the team that generated the greatest profit we looked at the resource at their disposal through completely different lenses and made $50 the students determined the most valuable asset they had was neither the $5 North the two hours instead they're insights was that they're most precious resource was there 3 minutes presentation time on Monday they decided to sell it to a company that wanted to recruit the students in the class the team traded a 3 minute commercial for the company and showed it to the students during the time they would have present teeth what they had done the prayer week this was brilliant they recognized that they have bad brother see volleyball affected others didn't even notice just waiting to be mine
