동명사구 정복 4일째라 동명사에 관한 내용을 거의 다 파 헤쳤다 보나 동명사구와 쌍동이인 현분사구가 맘에 걸린다 어차피 분사는 다음 주에 완파할 대상이니 분사와 동명사를 확실히 구별하여 성분 분석 완료를 이루고자 똑같이 생겨 먹었으나 성격이 전혀 다른 분사구를 약간 언급하고자 한다
dancing girl => girl is dancing 소녀가 춤춘다 (O) ; 현분사는 소녀의 동작
다음 지식란에 올려진 답변을 보면 알겠지만
한국에서 전문적으로 번역일을 하시는 분도 동명사가 목보로 쓰이는 경우는 알지 못하여
5형식에서 목보로 동명사가 쓰이지 않는다 선언하는걸 보며
이는 필시 다양한 다독을 통하여 영어자산을 불리지 않고 교과서 안에서만 영어를 배운 결과라 하겠다

Novices in the concept of verbals find it difficult to distinguish a present participle from a gerund because both
of them use the continuous tense ending "-ing." (See below for more about the verb tense.)
초보는 동명사와 분사가 쌍동이 같이 v-ing 형이니 구별하기 어려워한다
This is understandable, and the more students practice recognizing nouns and adjectives in their reading and in their
own writing, the more easily they may distinguish participles from gerunds.
그런 처지가 이해되나 초짜라도 품사 기초인 명사와 형용사의 성격과 관계를 잘 안다면
명사 역할인 동명사와 형용사 역할인 분사 구별하기는 식은 팥죽 먹기다
영어는 영어니 영어식으로 하자면
명사와 형용사를 구별하는 방법을 쓰면 간단하다
The simplest way to determine the difference is to apply the basic questions that identify nouns and adjectives:
If it answers the question "What?" or "Who?" then it's a noun, and all gerunds are nouns.
What / Who 의 질문에 답이되면 명사인데 동명사는 명사역할이니 명사로 치면 된다
명사나 의문사 what/who 로 대치될 수 있다
Formal dancing is making a comeback.
What is making a comeback?
Dancing is.
"Dancing" is a gerund.
If it answers the question "What's it like?" "Which?" or "What kind?" then it's an adjective,
and all participles are adjectives.
형용사면 "어떤 종류/상태"라고 명사를 설명하니
"What's it like?" "Which?" or "What kind?" 의 질문에 답이되면 형용사이고
명사/대명사를 설명하는 분사/구는 형용사이다 (허니 부사구라 말자)
That formally dancing couple are ballroom competition champions.
Which couple?
The dancing couple, so "dancing" is a participle.
[Jamming too much clothing into a washing machine]will result /in disaster. 동명사
Jamming too much clothing into the washing machine, Aamirsaved$1.25 but had to tolerate the curious stares of other laundry patrons as his machine bucked and rumbled with the heavy load. 분사
ㄴ. be 동사 뒤라는 같은 위치
보어로 명사/형용사 둘 다 be 동사 뒤에 쓰일 수 있으니 동명사나 분사 위치가 같을 수 있어 무지 헛갈린다
My hobby iscollecting stamps. 동명사
I am collecting stamps. 진행형 현분사는 동작동사이기에 형용사역할인 분사와는 성격이 다르다
정형동사 시험
My hobby collects stamps.(X) 동명사 Icollect stamps. (O) 진행 현분사는 동작동사라 현제동사도 됨
ㄷ. 쌍동이처럼 구분이 어려움
보자마자 이건지 저건지 알 수 없다
Jamming too much clothing into a washing machinewill result /in disaster.
Jamming too much clothing into the washing machine, Aamirsaved$1.25 but had to tolerate the curious stares of other laundry patrons as his machine bucked and rumbled with the heavy load.
Standing there at that concert, I could almost hear God’s voice speaking about His pleasure /in watching His daughters. And my heart overflowed /in thanksgiving for a good Heavenly Father.
ㄷ. 구조상의 위치는 같으나 의미상 다른 경우;
l. be 동사 뒤
be 동사 뒤는 명/형 보어거나 진행형 동사 3가지 유형이 있는데 동명사는 명사/보어로 현분사는 형용사/보어 및 진행형 동사로 be 동사 뒤에 뜨니 구조상은 현분사인지 동명사인지 구별이 까칠하나 의미상은 차이나므로 의미상으로만 구별이 된다
동명사 보어는 주어를 다른 명사로 재설명하는 역할이고
현분사는 주어의 능동적인 상태를 묘사/설명한다
When I was a little girl, one of the highlights of every summer was going /to our family reunion at White Oak Park. (X) 진행으로 하면 주어인 a highlight 가 가는 동작을 하는 요사스런 꼴이 되고 문맥상 진행동작도 부적절하다
When I was a little girl, [one of the highlights of every summer] was [going to our family reunion at White Oak Park]. (O) 동명사/보어로 하면 주어가 "동명사내용 하기"가 되어 주어 = 보어의 공식에 맞아 떨어진다
It is interesting. 하면 주어가할 동작이 아니니 진행도 아니올시다 ; It is interesting. (X) it = 흥미하기 도 억지니 동명사도 아니요; It is interesting. 주어가 능동적으로 흥미를 유발하는 상태다 하면 딱이라 형용사/분사인걸 알 수 있다; It is interesting. (O)
ll. 문두 둘 다 문두에 올 수 있으나 동명사 뒤에는 본동사가 뜨고 분사구 뒤에는 컴마 그리고 본문 주어와 동사 순으로 오는게 다르므로 보자마자 구별하기가 어려우나 일단 본동사만 찾으면 간단히 해결된다
[Jamming too much clothing into a washing machine]will result /in disaster. Jamming too much clothing into the washing machine, Aamirsaved$1.25 but had to tolerate the curious stares of other laundry patrons /as his machine bucked and rumbled with the heavy load.
나. 역할
ㄱ, 동명사구의 역할; 명사역할
명사 대행사니 (대용명사) 좀 길긴해도 한 묶음으로 해서 하나의 명사 처럼 논다 적어도 종속절 보다는 접속사와 주어가 않쓰인 동명사구가 그나마 짧아서 눈의 피로며 작문 에너지소모 방지에도 좋아 간결을 생명으로 아는 작가들이 애용한다
I hate [ seeming uncaring ] but he's such a downer.
= I hate that I seem uncaring but he's such a downer. (depressing person/a depressant or tranquilizing drug)
하여 명사 역할이니 명사 처럼 보면 된다
ㄴ. 형역 분사구의 형용사 역할
한번 해병이면 영원한 해병 처럼 Once a marine, always a marine.
A participle is a verbal that is used as an adjective and most often ends in -ing or -ed. The term verbal
indicates that a participle, like the other two kinds of verbals, is
based on a verb and therefore expresses action or a state of being.
However, since they function as adjectives,
participles modify nouns or pronouns. There are two types of
participles: present participles and past participles. Present
participles end in -ing. Past participles end in -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, or -ne as in the words asked, eaten, saved, dealt, seen, and gone.
다. 의미 차이
ㄱ. 구조에 따른 해석상의 차이
동명사는 '~하기'란 명사 의미나 분사는 능동적으로 ~인/하는 또는 수동적으로 ~한/된 의미로 각각 다르다
My hobby iscollecting stamps.
The participle always function as adjectives! 마치 광야의 a voice in a desert 한 목소리처럼 외롭다 느껴진다
하긴 이세상에 수십억의 목소리가 있는데 그중 단 하나의 목소리만 하나님의 목소리니 하나님께서도 외로우실것 같다
왜? 우리 기독인들도 하나님의 목소리를 대변하지 않던가? 자기 목소리도 좀 섞었으니 100% 그분 목소리는 아니겠져? 좀 섞였다는것이 그게 무슨 대수냐고요? 완전에 불완전한 요소가 조금 옥에 티로 섞여도 여전히 완전? 아니져 우리가 the way we are 있는 그대로 천국가면 천국도 망쳐질것 자명하져
Gerunds
are used as nouns. Participles are used as adjectives. In the A, B, C
sentences, the gerunds (-ing words) are nouns—a specific action or
behavior that is the reason for the reaction of the subject. In the A1,
B1, C1 sentences, the participles (also -ing words) are adjectives,
describing or modifying a noun or pronoun. You can see that sometimes,
using a participle instead of a gerund makes the meaning of the sentence
not only less precise, but sometimes confusing if you aren’t very
careful in the construction.
명사와 형용사 역할이란 차이 말고도 의미상의 차이도 있다
A1. Susanne was annoyed by Jim’s clumsy dancing. (The dancing annoyed Susanne) A2. Susanne was annoyed by Jim clumsily dancing. (Jim, who happened to be dancing, annoyed Susanne. You can see that this is not as precise a meaning as the A version.)
1번은 춤사위가 꼴 사나운데 비하여 2 번은 꼴 사납게 춤추는 짐이 꼴 사납다는 미묘한 의미차이 있다
B1. The queen was not amused with their posturing. (The posturing didn’t amuse the queen.) B2. The queen was not amused with them posturing. (They did not amuse her as they postured.) 1번은 그들의 자세가 않 웃기는데 2 번은 그런 자세를 하는 그들이 않 웃긴다
C1. He loved her winsome smiling. (He loved her smile) C2. He loved her winsomely smiling. (He loves her, but maybe only when she is smiling.) 미소를 사랑하는 것과 미소짓는 그녀를 사랑하는 차이
분사는 다음주에 다시 반복될거니 이정도로 마치자
동명사의 역할을 복습해보자
Gerund as subject: 주어
Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences. (Traveling is the gerund.)
The study abroad program might satisfy your desire for new experiences. (The gerund has been removed.)
Gerund as direct object: 목적
They do not appreciate my singing. (The gerund is singing.)
They do not appreciate my assistance. (The gerund has been removed)
Sometimes these hats are stacked so high that [trying to balance them /all on our competent-but-anxious-and-exhausted heads] sends us [toppling over completely]! 4형식 직목
Gerund as subject complement: 주격보어
My cat's favorite activity is sleeping. (The gerund is sleeping.)
My cat's favorite food is salmon. (The gerund has been removed.)
Gerund as object of preposition: 전치사의 목적
The police arrested him for speeding. (The gerund is speeding.)
The police arrested him for criminal activity. (The gerund has been removed.)
주의!!! 동명사가 목적보어로도 쓰이나 휘귀하므로 언급되지 않지만 실제로는 쓰임 She didn't call [being left behind] [living alone].
다 좋은데 보어로 쓰인 동명사가 진행형 현재분사로 보이니 집고 넘어가자
My cat's favorite activityissleeping. (The gerund is sleeping.)
sleeping 이 진행형 현재분사가 되기 위해서는 주어가 취침이라는 동작을 하는 중이어야 하는데 activity 가 잠을 잘 수 없으니 동작이 아니고 sleeping 취침이라는 동명사인걸 알 수 있다 진행형 동사인 경우는 일반동사로 고쳐도 의미가 통해야 하므로 고쳐 보면 안다
My cat's favorite activitysleeps. (X)
동명사와 현재분사를 구별하는 가장 쉬운 방법은 본동사를 찾아 볼드체하는 방법이다 본동사가 탐지되면 일반적으로 일반동사 앞은 주어 뒤는 수식어나 목적이 되고 Be 동사면 앞은 주어 뒤는 보어가 되므로 동명사면 문장 필수 요소에 자리에 있을꺼고 분사면 수식어 자리에 있게된다
Jamming too much clothing into a washing machinewill result /in disaster.
s vi
Jamming too much clothing into a washing machine = gerund phrase, the subject of the verb will result.
분사구
Jamming too much clothing into the washing machine, Aamirsaved$1.25 but had to tolerate the curious stares of other laundry patrons as his machine bucked and rumbled with the heavy load.
Jamming too much clothing into the washing machine = present participle phrase describing Aamir.
Bernard hatesbuttering toast with a fork.
s v c
Buttering toast with a fork = gerund phrase, the direct object of the verb hates.
분사구
Buttering toast with a fork, Bernardvowed
[that he would finally wash the week's worth of dirty dishes piled
in the sink]. s v o
Buttering toast with a fork = present participle phrase describing Bernard.
My dog's most annoying habit ishogging the middle of the bed.
s b c
Hogging the middle of the bed = gerund phrase, the subject complement of the linking verb is.
분사구
Last night I had to sleep on the couch because I found [my dog Floyd] [hogging the middle of the bed].
Hogging the middle of the bed = present participle phrase describing Floyd.
목적 보어로 형용사가 쓰이므로 대용 형용사인 분사도 쓰인다
동명사/구 가 쓰이는 경우를 지문에서 살펴보자
Exercisingis an important part of staying healthy. While some people enjoyexercising in a gym, I preferwalking. It’s because I don’t likeexercising in a hot building. I like to walk on the beach or in the park. I findenjoying nature while exercisingmakes the time pass quickly…and more enjoyably! When I was walking this morning in my neighborhood, I saw a barking dog. He wasn’t barking at me, thank goodness. Maybe he was barking because someone disturbed his nap. Like the old saying goes, let sleeping dogs lie.
Since Dan especially lovedworking with pine, he kept a good supply /on hand, piling leftover or unused pieces in Jered’s wood box for his own special projects
Today we will have a look at the difference between gerunds and participles.
Basically, gerunds are the ing form of verbs which function as nouns, 동명사는 명사역할
andparticiplesare the ing form of the verbs which functionas adjectives. 분사는 형용사
Read the paragraph above and see if you can find the gerunds and participles.
Then, check the examples below.
A gerund is a Verb-ing that works like a noun. Here are some examples:
• Exercising is an important part of staying healthy. • My wife always complains about my snoring. • George got in trouble for napping in his office.
A participle is a Verb-ing that works like a adjective. Here are some examples: • You shouldn’t disturb a sleepingdog. • There was a cryingbaby on my flight to New York.
There are other uses for gerunds and participles, and we will look at those uses in a future lesson. Do you like to exercise? Do you like exercising in a gym? What do you do you keep healthy.
동명사와 현재분사는 문법을 모르는 영어인들도 헷갈리게 하여 토론의 대상이 되기도 한다
허나 동명사는 명사역할, 분사는 형용사 역할로 간단히 이해하고 지나 가자 우린 영어 이해에 목적이 있지 영문학자가 되자는데 있지 않다
QUESTION: What are all the ‘-ing’ words in the following sentence?
He doesn’t like to waste time sitting around talking and drinking coffee.
ANSWER:
I know there are some who don’t like using the term “gerund”, but I’m
not part of that camp. In my mind, it’s easier to understand and teach
English grammar when we distinguish gerunds from present participles.
They both are formed by adding -ing to the base form of a verb, but that’s where their similarities end.*
동명사와 분사가 비슷하다는건 형태만 그렇다는 것이고 유사성은 형태 밖에서는 부재한다
Gerunds behave like nouns. They can be used as single words or in phrases.
동명사구는 명사처럼 역할하므로 한단어군으로 보면 된다
Gerunds and gerund phrases can be subjects and objects.
They can also be appositives and complements. Let me offer examples to illustrate.
Explaining grammar to studentsrequires both logic and creativity. [gerund = subject]
I enjoy explaining grammar to students and discussing grammar with colleagues. [gerund = direct object; there are 2 objects of "enjoy"]
There’s much I love about teaching. [gerund = indirect object]
The last topic, teaching advanced grammar, caused anxiety for more than one trainee. [gerund = appositive (a reduced adjective clause)]
The challenge most find difficult to overcome is teaching mixed levels. [gerund = subject complement; "the challenge" = "teaching"]
It’s
not easy teaching mixed
levels.
[gerund = adjective complement; "teaching mixed levels" helps to
describe and limit "easy"]
Do you agree with all six
examples? I think most student books limit the presentation of gerunds
to their roles as subjects and objects, but Jay Maurer in Focus on Grammar 5: An Integrated Skills Approach (2006)
does address gerunds as complements. His discussion in Unit 15 would
add a seventh example to my list: “He spends time reading” (260). Maurer
identifies “reading” as an object complement, that is, a complement in a
noun phrase. “Reading” is a complement to “time”.
영어인들도 덜 배운 사람들이면 동명사에 대해 깊이 모른다는 얘기다
He
offers another example with a negative gerund: “She found him not
working” (260). We can now identify “sitting” in our original statement
as an object complement: (He doesn’t like to waste timesitting around talking and drinking coffee.)
All
right. So let’s define present participles. In my understanding, they
differ from gerunds in that they cannot behave like nouns. Present participles either function as verbs or adjectives.
분사는 동사 아니면 형용사 역할이다라는 말은 진행형으로 쓰면 동작동사라는 말이고
명사를 설명하는 역할이면 형용사라는 얘기니 주격 보어나 목적격 보어도 이에 속한다
We see the present participle in progressive tenses and reduced adverb clauses.
We also see present participles as modifiers. My examples:
I am trying my best to explain my view on this grammar topic. [present participle as part of the present progressive] 진행형
When researching
grammar topics, I often turn to gurus like Azar, Biber, Greenbaum, and
Quirk. [present participle with an active meaning, reduced from "When I
research"]
Grammar is not an interesting subject for anyone else in my family. [present participle as an adjective; it modifies "subject"]
Returning to the original statement, He doesn’t like to waste time /sitting around talking and drinking coffee,
I’d identify “talking and drinking” as present participles in an adverb phrase of time.
There’s no subordinating conjunction, but the time relationship is clear.
He can waste time and sit around while talking and drinking coffee.
All the actions can be in progress at the same time. 동시간대의 동작
바로 이구절이 분사의 '한' 특성을 잘 설명한 말이다
분사의 동작은 시간대상 본동작과 같은 시간대 at the same time 이라는 '한' 특성이 있다는 거니
분사가 출현하면 바로 이 특성을 이용하여 이해하면 된다
하여 He doesn’t like to waste time /sitting around talking and drinking coffee, 에서 분사구인 /sitting around talking and drinking coffee 가 비록 time 이라는 명사 뒤에 콤마도 없이 쓰여 time 을 수식하는것 같지만 (누가 분사의 동작을 하는지 명확하면 콤마를 생략하기도 한다) 분사와 명사 사이에는 동작과 동작자라는 관계에 있어야 하니 time 이 sitting 이라는 동작을 할 수 없고 실제로는 주어가 부정사의 동작인 waste 하는 동작과 동시간대에 하는 동작이 sitting 이므로
I hate seeming uncaring but he's such a downer. (동명사는 목적, 현분사는 동명사라는 준동사의 보어) 니는 니길로 나는 내길로 각자 맡은바 역할 수행하러 가서 문장 의미가 상통하는 쾌거를 쉽게 이루리라 호언장담한다
확실히 다지자고 미워도 다시 한번 더
Every day I come to a greater understanding of God /as the perfect Father. It makes me [feel treasured] and softens the pain of what I didn’t have /growing up.
과분사는 수동상태 설명 현분사는 능동상태 설명이나 주어수식의 경우 동시동작 상태를 설명하므로 동작의 양상을 설명하는 부사와는 성격이 좀 다르다 허나 동명사는 확실히 명사역할을 한다
분사나 부정사나 둘다 동작자를 필요로하기에 동사설명의 부사와는 처지가 다른 때문이다
“For he will command his angels concerning you /to guard you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11, NIV). 누가 concerning 하며 to guard 를 하는가? 주어다 “he command, concerning and to guard
의미상 셋다 주어의 동작이나 정형동사인 본동작은 하나라는 법칙상 나머지는 준동사로 분사는 형용사로 동시동작상태, 부정사는 의도설명 부사역할로 쓴 것이고 동명사로 쓰면
This isliving alone. 이것이 홀로 살기이다 Mercy iswithholding punishment for what we deserve. 자비란 우리가 받아야할 것을 '안주기'이다
진행이 아닌건 평서문으로 해보면 안다
This lives alone. (X) Mercy withholds punishment for what we deserve. (X) 주어가 할 수 있는 동작이 아니다
해석이야 억지로도 되나 해석은 한류지 영류는 아니니 한류 우물에서 영어분사 혼란에 살던지 영어 세계로 나와서 영어분사 영어식정복을 하던지 Choice is yours to make.
Part of true forgiveness is [ releasing the hurt and letting go of the pain]!
