Shine City Project
Just One Project – Brinley Middle School
January 4, 2020
On January 4, 2020, Shine City Project once again helped out with Just One Project! Every other Saturday, Just One Project organizes mobile food pantry events called Pop Up and Give. Helping out any individuals and families who are food-insecure, the Pop Up and Give events are held at ten locations every month, typically at local schools where children and families can feel comfortable.
On this first Saturday of 2020, our four Shine City Project volunteers arrived at Brinley Middle School to help with the food distribution. There were various pallets of food that were to be passed out including brown rice, beans, canned carrots, peanut butter, canned tuna, and even pork loins! Each of our Shine City Project volunteers was able to have a designated food to hand out!
During the food distribution, we wanted to not just give out the food, but we wanted to have the right heart in doing so as well. As we were handing out the food, we shared some simple greetings such as "Good morning!" and "Happy New Year!". We also made sure that we were placing the donated food items in an individual's bag or cart with special care. At times, we also offered to give out a little more food than expected. With each person that we met, we wanted to ensure that they felt loved!
In less than an hour, we were able to distribute all of our food! With the help of our Shine City Project volunteers and all of the other volunteers who were present, 6,000 pounds of food was passed out to a couple hundred individuals and families!
Overall, this service project was a great way to start off 2020! We hope to continue to offer our hearts in anything that we do in the new year!
