Deadly Sinkhole 
 

Good evening, I’m Lester Holt sitting in tonight for Brian. 
What an incredibly close call, it was for a guest at a resort near Disney World when the ground literally opened up beneath them as many of them slept. 
I'd show you what it looks like from above
the scene right now in Clermont, Florida,
where a massive sink hole opened up overnight collapsing much of the resort structure. 
More than 100 people were forced to evacuate.
Some under harrowing conditions, remarkably no one was killed.
We need to know what room everybody was in.
It was shortly after 3:00 in the morning and Maggie Ghamry started her camera phone amid the chaos. 
She says it came without warning while on vacation here with family and friends from Virginia, she heard a single window pop its frame, then another and another. 
At first she thought it was someone in a fight.
Things flying, like, glass flying. 
People jumping out of windows, luggage flying out of windows, people trying to salvage what they could.
To me, it sounded like popcorn popping. 
It’s pop, pop, pop.
A security guard on patrol then began to run from unit to unit, in all evacuating 105 tourists here on vacation.
There was people sleeping, I literally had to wake them up and tell them to get out of the building.
Why do sinkholes occur? 
In Florida, the State's sandy soil sits on top of clay.
And that is  all supported on a layer of limestone. 
Limestone is like a strainer, the water migrates down and it hits Florida’s underground rivers. 
But when there is too much rain or a drought it can create a void like a balloon with air. 
As that void gets bigger, the earth on top becomes too heavy, and the balloon pops, causing a catastrophic event. 
A sinkhole.
Geologists say they know when conditions are ripe for a sinkhole, but like an earthquake, they cannot predict when or where one will open up.

정말 믿을 수 없는 구사일생입니다. 많은 관광객들이 잠들어 있을 때 디즈니월드 근처 리조트에서 어느 한 고객에게 일어난 사건입니다.
플로리다,클레몬트에 있는 사고현장 상공에서 그게 어떻게 생겼는지 보여드립니다.
거대한 싱크홀이 간밤에 드러났고 리조트 구조물 대부분을 붕괴시켰습니다.
100명 이상의 사람들이 탈출해야만 했습니다.
이런 끔찍산 상황에서 놀랍게도 한명도 사명자가 발생하지 않았습니다.
사람들이 어떤 방에 있었는지 알아야 할 필요가 있습니다.
새벽 3시를 막 넘긴 시간이었고 Maggie Ghamry는 그 혼란속에서 카메라폰을 구동시켰습니다.
가족과 버지니아에서 온 친구들과 함께하고 있는 휴가중에 예고도 없이 사고가 찾아왔어요.
창틀 하나가 부서지는 소리가 나더니 그 뒤로 하나씩 하나씩 더...
그녀는 처음에 누가 싸우는 소리라고 생각했습니다.
물건이 날아다니고, 유리가 날아다녔어요
사람들이 창문으로 뛰어내렸고 짐들이 창문밖으로 던졌고 뭐든 구하려고 노력했습니다.
전 처음에 팝콘이 터지는 소린줄 알았어요. 팝, 팝 ,팝
순찰중이던 경찰이 모든 방들을 뛰어다니며 휴가중인 105명의 관광객들을 모두 탈출시켰습니다.
사람들이 자고 있었고 그들을 깨워서 건물밖으로 나가라고 얘기해야만 했어요
왜 싱크홀이 일어나는걸까요?
플로리다에서는 모래질 토양이 점토질 위에 놓여있습니다.
그래서 석회암에 구조물이 지지하고 있습니다. 석회암은 여과기와 같아요.
물이 아래쪽으로 이동해서 플로리다의 지하하천과 부딪히게 됩니다.
하지만 폭우가 오거나 가뭄이 발생하면 공기가 가득찬 풍선처럼 공극을 발생시킬 수 있습니다.
공극이 커지면서 상부에 있는 지면이 너무 무거워지고 풍선이 터져 재난을 유발시키는 겁니다.
싱크홀입니다.
지질학자들은 싱크홀이 발생하기 위한 조건이 무르익었때의 조건을 알고 있습니다.
하지만 지진처럼 언제 어디서 발생할지는 예측할 수 없습니다.
