If you already have 22 unit cards then you should eliminate weak links. Only exception to this rule are some Scoia'tael fraction cards and Monsters because of some special cards that add cards from the deck.
There are four fractions in Gwent: Northern Kingdoms, Nilfgaardian Empire, Monsters and Scoia'tael. You can play with any fraction as long as you have enough cards in your deck. Each fraction is different - it's hard to use the same tactic in two different fractions. In addition to units and their skills, in case of fractions there are some additional factors that differ them from one another. One of them is fraction bonus - exclusive and constant skill of each race. They are as follows:
Each fraction has unique special cards as well - leaders. This card can be used anytime during the game - but only once!
Each game starts with
1. deciding on the bet size.
2. Then you can select the fraction,
3. modify your deck and
4. pick a leader card.
Only after that the game starts. The starting person is selected randomly (unless one of the participants is playing as Scoia'tael - in that case he decides who starts). First you can change two cards drawn "to hand" to other ones from your deck (random choice).
After that, each player places one card on the table. It is best to start with cards-spies. In first round you should place your weakest cards so that you won't be many points ahead of enemy. First person to win two rounds is victorious. Once the round ends, the player that has more points in cards wins. It is possible that you have no more cards and there is one more round to be played. In that case enemy will usually win, unless he has no card that gives points (unit card) and only special card. If that happens, a draw will occur. After a draw you won't receive any rewards but you can play another round.
Unit cards have a visible number of points that are added during the game when a card is played. There are also other cards that have no points. They have an impact on unit card's modifiers, positive or negative. You must remember that character's cards are excluded from the effect of special cards, including positive and negative ones. They cannot be returned back to the game after they were used as well.
First group are weather cards. There are four: Biting Frost, Impenetrable Fog, Torrential Rain and Clear Weather. Each of them reduce the card strength in a specific row (for both sides) to 1. The Frost reduces infantry units, Fog reduces ranged ones and the Rain reduces the siege cards. Clear Weather card removes all weather modifiers. There might be more than one weather card active simultaneously.
Another interesting card is Decoy. It allows you to change any unit on the board and move it to your hand by replacing it with the decoy - which is later a neutral card. It is wise to use the decoy when your cards have special skills. There can be only one decoy in a row.
The penultimate special card is Scorch. It should be used wisely because it eliminates from the board a card or cards with the same strength - the highest one. Your cards can be affected as well.
The last card is a positive one - Commander's Horn. Placed in any row, it doubles each card's modifiers (excluding characters). It cannot be taken off, it works until the round ends.
In addition to standard unit cards with bonuses, there are special cards that provide strategic bonuses when played.
SPECIAL CARDS | |
Card | Ability |
Commander's Horn | Doubles the strength of all units in a given row (limit one per row). |
Decoy | Swap with a card on the battlefield to return it to your hand - this removes the card's power value from your score. |
Scorch | Destroy the highest value card, or cards if multiple similar point scores exist, in play. This destroys your cards as well. |
WEATHER CARDS | |
Biting Frost | Sets the value of all Close Combat cards to 1. Ineffective on Hero cards. Applies before buffs like Commander's Horn, Tight Bond, etc. So for instance two cards with a Tight Bond will be 2, instead of 1. |
Impenetrable Fog | Sets the value of all Ranged Combat cards to 1. Ineffective on Hero cards |
Torrential Rain | Sets the value of all Siege Combat cards to 1. Ineffective on Hero cards |
Clear Weather | Clears all weather effects currently in effect on the battlefield. |
Many Gwent cards have their own unique abilities or skills, which can be used for varying purposes during a round of the game.
GWENT CARD ABILITIES | |
Ability | Effect |
Agile | Can be placed in either the Close Combat or Ranged rows. May not move once the card has been placed. |
Medic | Choose one card from your discard pile to play instantly. This excludes heroes or other weather / special cards. |
Morale Boost | Adds +1 strength to every card in it's row, excluding itself. |
Muster | Finds any cards with the same name in your deck and plays them instantly. |
Tight Bond | Doubles the strength of both cards when placed next to a unit of the same name. |
Spy | Place on an opponents battlefield (counts towards their total strength), then draw two cards from your own deck. |
Rewards
A standard reward for winning Gwent game is a random card from random fraction. Sadly, you can play each opponent for a card only once. After winning the card, further games will end with you winning only alchemy ingredients or other supplies. A standard bet size with common challengers, like merchants, is 10 crowns. Only exceptions are challengers from quests related to Gwent. By winning with them you can obtain a unique card, not available in any other way. You can meet opponents that will want to play for higher rewards during some parts of standard quests as well. Sometimes playing Gwent is even the only way to peacefully solve some problem or to negotiate.
==================================================
There are a total of 4 decks in Gwent comprising of Unit Cards, Leader Card, Weather Cards, and Special Cards:
Leader Cards
The Leader Cards have special abilities which can be put to use during a player’s turn – only once per match. Moreover, a Leader Card has different variants which can be earned, purchased, or found; each one with unique special abilities.
Unit Cards
The Unit Cards are a player’s primary means of earning points in Gwent. There are a total of 3 types of Unit Cards which are Closed, Ranged, and Siege. Like Leader Cards, Unit Cards also possess special abilities which can be used to turn tides during a match.
Special Cards
The Special Cards allow a player to inflict a wide array of effects during a match. These cards provide a player’s Unit Cards to come up with additional responses to deal with opponent’s moves. A common example of a Special Card is Weather Card.
Furthermore, a Weather Card can deplete the Strength of all cards at a player’s and his or her opponent’s disposal. In addition to this, there are certain special Weather Cards which negate all other Weather Cards in a match. Lastly, there are a total of 3 types of Weather Cards which affect different Unit Cards:
Hero Cards and Neutral Cards
The Hero Cards are always stronger than regular Unit Cards and are immune to Special Cards which gives the players with these cards a huge advantage. The Neutral Cards, on the other hand, don’t belong to any specific decks such as Special Cards or Unit Cards.
These cards possess special abilities which enhance the effects of other cards. The Neutral Cards include Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Ciri.
Since a player can only draw 10 cards, it’s recommended NOT to use these cards too early.
A player needs to win 2 rounds to win a match so always be careful with them. There is no shame in passing a turn if you think your opponent’s card is too strong for your card. Furthermore, passing a turn doesn’t mean quitting the game.
Aside from certain early opponents, you need to possess a strong deck to defeat high level Gwent players.
Remember that you can always buy new cards from the Inn at the White Orchard – the same place where you first learn to play the game. Moreover, add strong cards into your deck as soon as you get them.
Always be careful with the Weather Cards. Since these cards affect the cards of both players; only use them when you’re sure that they’ll affect the opponent’s card more than your own cards. Lastly, Geralt will come across a number of Gwent players during certain side-quests.
These players sometimes possess the best cards out there, so if you’ve an interest in collecting them all; challenge them! There are a total of 197 Gwent Cards in the game and this is one of the ways to acquire some of them.
This tells you where a unit card will appear on the Gwent board after playing it. A card may wind up at close, long or siege ranges.
These special cards do not possess a range:
This represents a card’s overall power. If a card has 10 points at close range, then you get 10 points from this position. Unit cards have power, while Weather and Special Gwent cards do not.
Certain Gwent cards possess cool abilities, which we detail below.
These are among the most powerful Gwent cards in The Witcher 3, and you only have one at a time. In fact, there are four unique versions of each Leader card.
Leaders in the Northern Realms (King Foltest)
Leaders in Nilfgaard (Emyhr)
Leaders in Scoia'tael (Francesca)
Leaders of Monsters (Eredin)
===================================
In addition to standard Gwent games against merchants, there are some tournament games with stronger opponents in which you can win unique cards.
Gwent: Collect 'Em All - first quest that companies you for most of the game. It's about collecting all possible cards. You can have more than one piece of some cards - in this quest you must have every card, especially the unique ones. The number of cards, including the repeated ones, is limited. To collect all of them, you must complete all quests related to the card game and defeat most (not all) "standard" opponents (innkeepers, merchants). When you no longer are rewarded with a card after the game, then it means that you have all non-unique cards.
Gwent: Velen Players - players from northern part of Velen. It's the first phase of the tournament games. You start it with a game with Bloody Baron and you have three more enemies to defeat in villages. After winning with Baron (Northern Kingdoms deck, Sigismund Dijkstra card), win with the boatbuilder in Oreton (Nilfgaard deck, Lethocard) and fortune teller in Benek (Monsters deck, Weavess crone card). Once you defeat any of them, you will unlock access to playing with Hadek in Midcopse (Northern Kingdoms deck, Vernon Roche card).
Gwent: Big City Players - you receive this quest after talking with Vimme Vivaldi in Novigrad. You have total of four opponents. After winning with Vivaldi (Scoia'tael deck, Vesemir card) go to Marquise Serenity (Nilfgaard deck, Moorvran Voorhis card). Your next opponent is Dijkstra - you will be able to play with him after advancing in the storyline (Northern Kingdoms deck, Esterad Thyssen card). Last opponent is elven merchant in Farcorners (Scoia'tael deck, Cirilla card). For completing the quest you will also receive commander card Francesca Findabair, the most beautiful woman in the world.
Gwent: Playing Inkeeps - continuation of the previous quest with Gwent players in Novigrad. You must win with three opponents in different places. First win with Stjepanin the inn in Oxenfurt (Nilfgaard deck, Yennefer card). Then the inn owner inFarcorners (Nilfgaard deck, Menno Coehoorn card) or available at this point Oliver inNovigrad's inn (Monsters deck, Tibor Eggebracht card).
High Stakes - Most prestigious tournament in which you will have to defeat four opponents in a row to complete it successfully. 1000 crowns and a strong enough deck will be required to enter the tournament. First opponent is Bernard Tulle (Northern Kingdoms deck, Foltest card), second is Sasha (Nilfgaardian Empire deck, Emhyr var Emreis card) and automatically another opponent Finneas (Scoia'tael deck, Francesca Findabair card) - after the battle with this opponent a fist fight for life or death will start. Last opponent is Count (Monsters deck, Eredin card). You won't receive money for winning, unless you continue the plot...
Once the money is stolen (you can't avoid that), together with Sasha examine the balcony. You will find a bolt. Then, near the fountain below, a tape, which smell will lead you to a chest. Meet with the girl in the docks, near the warehouse - entrance is through the first floor, from the northern side. Defeat 6 enemies inside (level 26-27). You will receive 4500 crowns.
Gwent: Old Pals - this quest becomes available after completing the main plot in Novigrad (saving Dandelion). Your first opponent is Zoltan (in front of the Rosemary and Thyme inn) (Scoia'tael deck, Eithne card). Then win a card from Vernon Roche in his hideout (Northern Kingdoms deck, Seasenthessis card). Then, when you have a chance (during the quest in Novigrad or in Kaer Morhen) play with Lambert (Scoia'tael deck, Triss Merigold card).
Important - Thaler is part of the list above as well. You rescue him during the Plotquest. But if you complete the quest above before you save Talar, playing with him will be still possible later, in a separate quest about playing only with him (Scoia'tael deck, Geralt card).
Gwent: Skellige Style - you will find an announcement on the notice board in the village under Kaer Trolde fortress. You must complete first main quest Echoes of the Past to start it - that's when you meet the first opponent, Mousesack (Monster deck, Leshen card). After him, you can challenge Crach an Craite (Monster deck, Draug card) and Gremist (Nilfgaard deck, Mysterious elf/Avallac'h card). After winning with Crach, play with Lugos (Monster deck, Katakan card). For completing the quest you will receive Emhyr var Emreis card).
Not all cards can be simply bought or won. Some can only be obtained by completing side quests.
