(Key Points ofthe Article)

Canadian-born Jesuit priest Father Bernard Senécal is the subject of the France 2 documentary The Field of Heaven — A Jesuit Priest in South Korea, which has sparked an unexpected debate among French-speaking Catholics. Since arriving in Korea in 1985, Father Senécal has practiced Zen Buddhism and maintained exchanges with Buddhist monks for more than 30 years. After retiring as a professor at Sogang University, he has continued a community life combining meditation, study and farming.
Director Carine Poidatz spent two weeks in April filming more than 40 hours of footage in the Dojeon Dolbat Community in Yeoju, Seoul and other locations, eventually producing a 26-minute documentary. Watched by approximately 800,000 viewers, the film drew sharply divided reactions, ranging from praise for Father Senécal as “a humble and radiant man of faith” to criticism that his approach represented “religious syncretism rather than interreligious dialogue.” Poidatz said, “At least no one was indifferent.”
The filming also captured community life with Saleh Rantisi, a Palestinian Muslim from Gaza, showing that the encounters there extended beyond Catholicism and Buddhism, although these scenes were ultimately left out of the final edit. Another important part of the documentary is Father Senécal’s friendship with Venerable Songam of Dopiansa Temple, who was suffering from terminal cancer at the time.
Poidatz compared the film’s message to the story of “a frog in a well.” She explained: “This is not about creating religious syncretism. It is about remaining rooted in one’s own faith while broadening one’s perspective through encounters with other religious traditions.”

1 How many hours of footage did you shoot in total for this documentary?
For this documentary, my team and I shot around 40 hours of footage in total, including the drone footage.
2 Of all the sequences that were ultimately left out of the final edit, which one do you most regret having to leave out?
For several years, I taught at a journalism school, and I often told my students, who were training to become journalists, that we could never tell viewers everything we had seen or heard in the field because we always had time constraints to respect. Whether you are making a 26-minute documentary or even a two-minute news report, you always have to choose which information to include, which images, sounds or interviews to keep. That is the role of the journalist or filmmaker. And it is very often a difficult choice to make.
Those choices are made during the editing process. In the case of the documentary Le champ du Ciel, it was particularly difficult because I had so much interesting material. Among the interviews I regret not being able to include was the one with Father Kim, the Superior of the Jesuit community in Seoul, during his visit to the community. He spoke about his friendship with Father Bernard and his interest in the community. There was also the interview with Father Paul Du-seon Park, parish priest of Yatap-dong in Bundang, who invited Father Bernard to give a talk to his parishioners about the links between Buddhism and Christianity. And finally, there was the interview with Saleh Rantisi, a Palestinian Muslim from Gaza and a friend of Father Bernard, who lived in the community for more 12 months and spoke about his experience there.
3 What impressions did you take away from filming in Korea and from meeting Father Bernard, this “farmer priest”?
Before travelling to Korea, I spoke with Father Bernard several times on the phone to get to know him better. I watched documentaries made by Korean television so that I could get a visual sense of the places where we would be filming. I also read Father Bernard’s book, Jesus Christ Encounters Gautama the Buddha.
Then I had the opportunity to meet him “in the flesh” in Switzerland in March this year, when I took part in a spiritual retreat with him. This gave me the chance to discover his way of teaching and meditating. What I particularly appreciated was that, although he was the one with the knowledge, the teacher, he first listened to the participants to understand where we were starting from, so that he could adapt his teaching to our level of meditation practice and to our expectations.
So when I arrived in Korea, I was very happy finally to meet him “in the field”, together with the members of his community. It was therefore not the first time I had met him. However, it was my first time discovering Korea.
I should add that I had wanted to visit Korea for a long time. I had hoped to go there with my sister Fanny, my brother-in-law Etienne and their three sons. Etienne was born in Korea and was adopted by a French family when he was only a few months old. He had always told me that when his children were older, he would organise a trip to Korea to show them the country where he was born, and that he would take me with them. So he was a little disappointed to hear that I would be going there before them!
But of course, I fully intend to return one day with his family, because I really loved the country and its people, whom I found so warm and welcoming. I also loved discovering a culture so different from my own — not to mention the delicious food, of course!
I spent several days with Father Bernard and the members of the community there, and I was able to discover their demanding daily routine. Alongside meditation and study, a large part of each day is devoted to working the land. I saw that everyone took part according to their abilities: men and women, young and old. This work brings people together beyond cultural or religious differences. Physical work also helps to clear the mind, which is so often cluttered with everyday worries or overwhelmed by intellectual activity.
In some ways, this way of life reminded me, on a more modest scale, of the life of Benedictine monks in medieval Europe. I was very impressed by the demands of this simple, rural community life, rooted in morning meditation.
4 I have heard that this documentary about Father Bernard was quite a special project. Could you tell us how the idea for the film came about and what led you to decide to make it ?
I am a freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker. I have been working for 25 years on the Sunday morning religious programmes broadcast on France 2, the French public television channel, particularly Le Jour du Seigneur, the Catholic programme.
Le Jour du Seigneur broadcasts an hour and a half of programming every Sunday, including reports, documentaries, studio discussions with guests, and Masses broadcast live on television.
Every year, the producer of Le Jour du Seigneur proposes different themes for the documentaries broadcast during the summer. In 2026, the theme was based on encounters and was entitled Des rencontres qui font vivre (“Encounters that give life”).
When I received this theme, I immediately thought of Father Bernard’s experience of encountering Korean culture and Buddhism, because I had recently listened to a lecture he had given in Paris in February 2025.
So I contacted Father Bernard by email to ask whether he would agree to let me make a documentary about him, one that would share his personal experience and introduce viewers to the unique nature of his community in Korea.
Father Bernard did not know me. I don’t know whether he was surprised by my request. But I clearly remember his reply: “Carine, I don’t know you, but I trust you. You know, I have received a great deal in my life, and now it is time for me to give.”
So we began preparing the documentary together. It took me more than a month to write a detailed proposal, which I then submitted to Le Jour du Seigneur. The programme received around fifty documentary proposals in total and selected five of them, including mine. I remember how happy I was when I heard the news! And I immediately emailed Father Bernard to tell him.
5 What did you pay particular attention to while making this documentary?
For me, the backbone of the documentary was Father Bernard’s testimony: his life experience and his encounter with Buddhism. Alongside his testimony, it was also very important to give a voice to the other members of the community who live there with him, so that they could explain what had led them to choose this path.
Then I focused on how to tell the story visually: how could I take the viewer on a journey to Korea, into Father Bernard’s world and his personal story?
To help me achieve this, I worked with an illustrator and a composer. Both drew inspiration from Korean culture to create the illustrations and music for the film.
Could you tell us about an anecdote or a particularly memorable moment that occurred during filming?
That is a difficult question because every day had its own memorable moments! But if I had to choose one particularly moving experience, it would be our encounter with Venerable Songam at Dopiansa Monastery.
Although he was very ill — he died of cancer three months after we filmed there — he welcomed us with extraordinary warmth without showing how tired he was. Three days before we arrived, he had even asked a Buddhist nun from another monastery to come and prepare a magnificent festive meal for us according to Buddhist tradition. We were treated “like royalty”.
I was deeply moved by this man: by his kindness, his hospitality and his spiritual depth. After the meal, we walked with him through the monastery cemetery, and he showed us the place where his own grave would be. He had already prepared everything for his approaching death and seemed to be filled with a profound inner peace.
What an unforgettable encounter!
6 I understand that during your days off, you travelled and discovered different places in Korea. What impressions did you take away from those moments and, more generally, from Korea?
Unfortunately, we did not really have the opportunity to travel as tourists. My cameraman, sound engineer and I had only one day off in Seoul.
We walked around the city, particularly in the Gangnam district, and were impressed by the very tall buildings, because in Paris — where all three of us live — everything is on a much smaller scale. There are very few high-rise buildings like those in Seoul.
We also visited Bongeunsa Temple, which we really loved. All the paths were decorated with yellow, pink, red and blue lanterns in preparation for Buddha’s Birthday.
It was a very pleasant, calm and peaceful place, filled with trees and greenery in the middle of all those concrete towers. It did us good to spend some time there!

What an unforgettable encounter!
8 Finally, what message would you like to give to Korean viewers who will discover this documentary?
Through this film, French viewers discovered that it is possible to be Catholic and at the same time to find in Buddhism something that can enrich one’s own faith, while remaining Catholic.
It is not about creating a form of syncretism, as Thérèse explains very clearly in the documentary. Rather, it is about broadening one’s horizons, like the little frog that comes out of its well.
And that is what I also hope for Korean viewers.
