Hwang Tae-hee, 29, who graduated from university five years ago, is still out of work even though she has applied to over 100 companies and has had numerous interviews over the past two years.
She neither went abroad to study foreign languages nor worked as an intern because she studied for three years after school to become a certificated public accountant. Following one failure after another, she has now given up looking for work and spends most of her time at home, reading books and doing household chores.
Like Hwang, a growing number of people in their late 20s and early 30s are giving up seeking jobs as businesses here become more reluctant to hire new workers amid an uncertain economic outlook, failing to create the kind of jobs sought after by young adults.
According to the National Statistical Office (NSO) Tuesday, the number of people giving up job-seeking reached 120,000 in July, up 16,100 from a year earlier. The number has increased at a faster pace this year as companies have failed to generate sufficient jobs.
The number of openings last month was 153,000, below the government target of 200,000 for the fifth consecutive month. Sluggish private consumption has hit the services sector hard, making more businesses unwilling to employ new workers. The housing market slump has also made builders reluctant to carry out construction projects and hire workers.
People giving up job seeking are classified as part of the economically inactive population that refers to those who are neither working nor looking for a job because of housekeeping, childcare, old age, study, health problems or other reasons. The jobless, however, are tallied as part of the economically active population, along with the employed.
``People discontinuing job hunting are those who sought work in the past year but could not find work. They then become frustrated with the job market and abandon their search all together. They could be called disappointed jobless,'' an NSO official said.
He said the majority are dependent on family members with regular incomes, adding many choose not to accept jobs that do not meet their expectations even though they are unemployed.
The number of ``decent'' jobs, which offer high salaries and good job security, has decreased, with these types of jobs becoming harder to come by because of intensifying competition among college graduates and workers.
Local manufacturers have generated fewer decent jobs as the economy has become more capital and technology oriented, and companies have expanded operations overseas rather than here. Instead, a number of manual and low paying positions in the services sector have been created.
``There are more women than men who give up seeking jobs, dealing a harder blow to women,'' the official said.
The number of men who stopped looking for jobs stood at 65,000 in July, down 1,100 from a year ago, falling for the fourth consecutive month, according to the statistical office. About 55,000 women gave up searching for employment, up 17,2000 from the previous year, and rising for the fifth straight month.
