잠언 25, 8~28

[밀부르가]

네 눈으로 보았다 해서

8  성급히 법정에 나서지 마라.

    네 이웃이 너를 부끄럽게 하면  결국 어찌 하려느냐?

    What your eyes have seen 

    do not bring forth too quickly against an opponent;

     For what will you do later on when your neighbor puts you to shame?

9  이웃과 다툴 일이 있으면 다투되 남의 비밀은 들추지 마라.

10  그것을 들은 이가 너를 꾸짖고 너를 두고 하는 험담이 그치지 않는다.

      Argue your own case with your neighbor, but the secrets of others do not disclose;

     Lest, hearing it, they reproach you, and your ill repute never ceases.

11  알맞게 표현된 말은 은 쟁반에 담긴 황금 사과와 같다.

12  들을 줄 아는 귀에 지혜로운 훈계자는 금 고리요 순금 장식과 같다.

      Golden apples in silver settings are words spoken at the proper time. 

      A golden earring or a necklace of fine gold―one who gives wise reproof to a listening ear. 

13  믿음직한 심부름꾼은 그를 보낸 주인에게

      수확 때의 시원한 얼음과 같아 그 주인의 생기를 돋우어 준다.

      Like the coolness of snow in the heat of the harvest are faithful messengers for those who send them,

      lifting the spirits of their masters.

14  거짓 선물을 자랑하는 자는  구름과 바람은 있으나 비가 없는 것과 같다.

      Clouds and wind but no rain―the one who boasts of a gift not given. 

15  끈기는 판관을 설득하고  부드러운 혀는 뼈를 부순다.

      By patience is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue can break a bone.       

16  꿀을 발견하더라도 적당히 먹어라.   질려서 뱉어 버리게 된다.

      If you find honey, eat only what you need, lest you have your fill and vomit it up. 

17  이웃집이라고 너무 자주 드나들지 마라.  질려서 너를 미워하게 된다.

      Let your foot be seldom in your neighbors' house, lest they have their fill of you― and hate you.

18  이웃에게 해로운 거짓 증언을 하는 자는  방망이와 칼과 날카로운 화살과 같다.

      A club, sword, or sharp arrow―the one who bears false witness against a neighbor. 

19  환난을 당할 때에 배신자를 믿는 것은  부서지는 이요 비틀거리는 발과 같다.

      A bad tooth or an unsteady foot―a trust betrayed in time of trouble.

20  마음이 아픈 이에게 노래를 불러대는 자는

      추운 날에 옷을 벗기는 자와 같고  상처에 식초를 끼얹는 자와 같다.

      Like the removal of clothes on a cold day, or vinegar on soda, is the one who sings to a troubled heart.   

21  네 원수가 주리거든 먹을 것을 주고  목말라하거든 물을 주어라.

22  그것은 숯불을 그의 머리에 놓는 셈이다.

      주님께서 너에게 그 일을 보상해 주시리라.

      If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat, if thirsty, give something to drink;

      For live coals you will heap on their heads, and the LORD will vindicate you. 

23  북풍이 비를 몰고 오듯  숨어 헐뜯는 혀는 성난 얼굴을 몰고 온다.

      The north wind brings rain, and a backbiting tongue, angry looks. 

24  다투기 좋아하는 아내와 한집에 사는 것보다  옥상 한구석에서 사는 것이 낫다.

      It is better to dwell in a corner of the housestop than in a mansion with a quarrelsome wife. 

25  먼 땅에서 온 기쁜 소식은  타는 목에 시원한 물과 같다. 

      Cool water to one faint from thirst is good news from a far country. 

26  악인 앞에서 흔들리는 의인은 흐려진 샘물이며 못 쓰게 된 우물과 같다.

      A trampled fountain or a polluted spring―a just person fallen before the wicked.

27  꿀을 너무 많이 먹는 것이 좋지 않듯  명예에 명예를 추구하는 것도 좋지 않다.

      To eat too much honey is not good; nor to seek honor after honor. 

28  정신에 자제력이 없는 사람은 파괴되어 성벽이 없는 성읍과 같다.

A city breached and left defenseless are those who do not control their temper.
