''Born to Be Blue!'' is an album by American jazz pianist Bobby Timmons recorded in 1963 and released on the Riverside label.
Throughout his career, Bobby Timmons was typecast as a soulful and blues-oriented pianist due to his hits (Moanin ',This Here and Dis Dat). But as he shows on this 1963 trio date (with either Sam Jones or Ron Carter on bass and drummer Connie Kay), Timmons was actually a well-rounded player when inspired. The repertoire on his album ranges from bop to spirituals, from three diverse originals to "Born to Be Blue." This is excellent music but unfortunately Timmons would not grow much musically after this period. His album is worth picking up...(AllMusic) _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Tracklist: 01.Born to Be Blue (M.Torme/R.Wells)...(00:00) 02.Malice Towards None (Tom McIntosh)...(04:27) 03.Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child (Traditional)...(09:28) 04.Know Not One (Bobby Timmons)...(14:13) 05.The Sit-In (Bobby Timmons)...(22:11) 06.Namely You (G.DePaul/J.Mercer)...(26:31) 07.Often Annie (Bobby Timmons)...(32:36 _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Personnel: 1.Bobby Timmons - piano 2.Sam Jones (tr.1,2,5,7) - bass 3.Ron Carter (tr.3,4,6) - bass 4.Connie Kay - drums. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Genre:Jazz/Hard Bop/Soul-Jazz Recorded:Plaza Sound Studios;N.Y.C;Aug.12(tr.3,4,6) and Sept.10(tr.1,2,5,7),1963.
