advances description (in to Crusader Kings event folds advance names.csv)
Bows
Shortbow: This weapon is made of wood and easy to use and very quick to fire. It has a short range and poor punch against armour
Longbow: This weapon is made of wood and moderately easy to use. It is quick to fire has medium range and a good punch against armour
Composite bow: This weapon is made of wood horn and sinew and moderately easy to use. It is quick to fire has long range and a good punch against armour
Reinforced longbow: This weapon is made of wood horn sinew and reinforced with steel and is rather cumbersome to use. Its rate of fire is rather slow but it has a very long range and a very good punch against armour.
Marksman longbow: This weapon is made of wood horn sinew and reinforced with steel and is rather cumbersome to use. Its rate of fire is very slow but it can hit targets at extreme ranges with excellent accuracy and armour penetration.
Crossbows
Slinged javelin:This is basically a thrown short spear propelled by a sling increasing thrust power and range. It is normally used in one large volley against the enemy and thereafter the throwers continue fighting in normal melee
Light crossbow:This weapon is made of wood and rather easy to use and quick to fire. It has a medium range but a poor punch against armour.
Medium crossbow:This weapon is made of wood and sinew and easy to use but slow to fire. It has a long range and a good punch against armour.
Heavy crossbow:This weapon is a composite of wood iron and sinew and easy to use but slow to fire. It has a very long range and a very good punch against armour
Arbalest:This weapon is made of steel and cumbersome to use. It is very slow to fire but it can hit targets at extreme ranges with excellent accuracy and armour penetration.
Leather armour
Soft leather:This is a leather suit softened with oil to let the warrior keep his agility in battle. It stops only the weakest strikes or punctures.
Reinforced leather:This is a leather suit softened with oil to let the warrior keep his agility in battle. It is reinforced with padding to give better protection against heavier blows and punctures. Still it only stops weaker strikes or punctures.
Boiled leather:This is a leather suit softened with oil and then boiled to make it stiff. It stops more strikes and punctures than its softer cousins at the expense of agility and is inferior to chainmail
Rigid leather:This is a leather suit softened with oil and then boiled for a short time to make it stiffer and then reinforced with padding. It is as effective as boiled leather but does not hamper agility as much. It is still inferior to most chainmail.
Scaled leather:This is a leather suit made by taking small scales of first class leather and boiling them for a very long time then adding them together on a padding. This is the best leather armour and more effective than even some chainmail but leather crafting will not go much further in development.
Chain armour
Chained leather:This is a leather suit with chains attached to it to make it more protective against slashes.
Light chainmail:This is a light hauberk made of interlocking loops of iron. Parts other than the
torso are protected by leather.
Chainmail:This is a hauberk made of interlocking loops of iron. Parts other than the torso and arms are protected by leather.
Full chainmail:This is a full suit made of interlocking loops of iron or steel covering all parts of the body.
Plated chainmail: This is a full suit made of interlocking loops of metal covering all parts of the body. Armour plates have been added to this to protect parts of the torso.
Plate armour
Scalemail:This is a leather suit with armour plates added to it to give extra protection for the torso biceps and thighs
Banded mail:This is an armoured leather suit with armour plates crafted in circles around the body. The protection is generally very good but it leaves naked spots and decreases agility considerably.
Halfplate:This is a chainmail suit with armour plates added to it to give extra protection for the torso biceps and thighs
Platemail:This is a platemail suit where the plates are shaped to work in unison with normal bodily movement. It covers head torso biceps and thighs while the rest of the body is covered by chainmail.
Full plate:This is a platemail suit where the plates are shaped to work in unison with normal bodily movement. It covers the whole body.
Crush weapons
Handaxe:This is the smallest of crush weapons. It is easy to use and doesn't require special training. It also has some slashing qualities which make it an excellent weapon for lighter infantry units.
Warhammer:This is a light crush weapon. It is easy to use and doesn't require special training. It is particularly effective against heavily armoured opponents and is often used by infantry.
Mace:This is a medium crush weapon. It is rather easy to use and doesn't require much special training. It is particularly effective against heavily armoured opponents and is often used by infantry.
Morningstar:This is a heavy crush weapon. It is rather cumbersome to use and requires some special training. It is particularly effective against heavily armoured opponents and often used by infantry.
Battleaxe:This is a heavy crush weapon. It is cumbersome to use and needs special training. It is extremely effective against heavily armoured opponents and is often used by infantry. This is the best crush weapon.
Slash weapons
Shortsword:This is the smallest of slash weapons. This one-handed blade is easily used together with a shield for extra protection. The shortsword is the classical infantry melee weapon developed from the Roman Spatha.
Broadsword:This is the standard medium slash weapon. This one-handed blade is easily used together with a shield for extra protection. The broader and slightly longer blade gives its wielder better reach than the wielder of a short sword.
Longsword:This is the supreme medium slash weapon. This one-handed blade is easily used together with a shield for extra protection. The longer blade gives its wielder better reach and balance than the wielder of a broad sword.
Bastardsword:This is the most flexible medium-heavy slash weapon. This blade is easily used together with a shield for extra protection if used one-handed and will then have better punch than the longsword. If used two-handed a shield is no longer an option but the power of its strikes will rival those of the greatsword.
Greatsword:This is the supreme slash weapon. This blade is easily used two-handed ?though a shield is no longer an option - but the power of its strikes is rivalled by none but the greataxe and the heavy lance.
Piercing weapons
Longspear:This is a standard medium pierce weapon. It is easy to use and doesn't require special training. It is also a good weapon against a mounted opponent and is therefore primarily used by infantry.
Pike:This is an advanced medium pierce weapon. It is easy to use but requires considerable special training. It is a very good weapon against a mounted opponent and is therefore primarily used by infantry.
Lance:This is an advanced medium pierce weapon. It is relatively easy to use after some special training. It is a very good weapon against a dismounted opponent and is therefore primarily used by heavy cavalry.
Polearm:This is a heavy pierce weapon. It is rather cumbersome to use and requires considerable special training. It is an excellent weapon against a mounted opponent and is therefore primarily used by infantry.
Heavy lance:This is a heavy pierce weapon. It is cumbersome to use and requires extensive special training however it is an excellent weapon when used against a dismounted opponent and is therefore primarily used by heavy cavalry.
Siege equipment
Battering ram:This is the most basic and simple piece of siege equipment. It consists of a large wooden pole which is used to batter down a section of the wall or if possible the castle entrance.
Siege ladders:These are tall ladders which are raised against a wall to enable the attacker to overrun the defenders on top of the wall and take the castle.
Siege towers:These large structures are a form of armoured siege ladder. They protect soldiers from archers on the wall and are sometimes fitted with battering rams.
Mangonel:This is a medium sized catapult used for throwing large rocks against the wall and thus break it. It can also be used to lob burning material or disease-stricken animals or corpses over the wall to weaken the defenders.
Trebuchet:This is a large catapult used for throwing large rocks against the wall and thus break it. It can also be used to lob burning material or disease-stricken animals or corpses over the wall to weaken the defenders.
Castles
Hillfort: used for throwing large rocks against the wall and thus break it. It can also be used to lob burning material or disease-stricken animals or corpses over the wall to weaken the defenders.
Small castle:The small castle was often built around the foundations of a hill fort. It was rather small but had a garrison throughout the year. Any ruler striving to prove his importance had to have at least a small castle.
Medium castle:The medium castle was often built around the foundations of a small castle. It was of an average size with a small hamlet within its walls and it maintained a garrison throughout the year. It also provided its owner a stronger political and defensive position.
Large castle:The large castle was often built around the foundations of a medium castle. It was quite sizeable with a small town within its walls and housed a large garrison throughout the year. It had very strong durability and could withstand sieges for quite a long time.
Huge castle: Huge castles were often built around the foundations of a large castle. They were vast complexes with a small domain within its walls and could sustain a very large garrison throughout the year. These massive fortifications had enormous durability and were nigh-on-impossible for anyone other than the armies of Kings or Emperors to capture.
Defensive tactics
Defensive terrain:This tactic evolved by training units to take advantage of defensive terrain and to use it effectively. It also included scouting and specially prepared equipment.
Position combat:This tactic made it easy to defend a smaller area by defending a chain of positions with earthworks and obstacles.
Missile barrage:This tactic meant that archers were drilled and disciplined enough to release barrages of arrows or bolts onto the onrushing enemies. The effect could be devastating and was much more effective than each man firing at will.
Drilled pikemen:This tactic involved training and drilling pikemen in units. These units could swiftly change from march order to battle formation and thus become small fortresses in the sea of battle. They worked in squares and had great stopping power against infantrymen and cavalry alike.
Unit organisation:This was the organisation of un-coordinated masses of infantry into cohesive military units. Instead of acting as a mob they began to work in unison with much greater efficiency.
Offensive tactics
Offensive terrain:This meant training units to take advantage of terrain suited for attack and to use it effectively. It also included scouting and specially prepared equipment.
Frontal charge:This tactic made maximum use of the shock power of a tight cavalry formation. Units were trained to charge against the enemy front without regard to casualties in order to break enemy morale by sheer terror.
Reserves:This tactic involved keeping a small reserve at hand which could be used to change the balance at key points in the battle.
Dismounted knights:Eventually knights were trained to act as infantry in addition to their cavalry role. This made them much more flexible in combat and their superior morale and skill made them excellent multipurpose units.
Hierachic command:This evolved in response to the need for clear leadership on the battlefield. Previously unclear and conflicting feudal duties often decided when and why a direct order on the battlefield would be obeyed. Now a hierarchical command system was implemented where each man knew his place and disobeying an order meant a swift and disgraceful death.
