Hellooooo, Kevin!
It’s Ryna with many many hobbies and something weird just happened.
I usually take so long writing a letter to you, so I always wrote it in google doc first and then copied & pasted it onto the fancafe. I just finished writing this very letter when you went on 🪐 pm. You happened to talk about the thing I wrote in this letter, Steven Universe. I was gonna ask if you know it, but now I know that you do.
So now I’m back here again, rewriting this letter. Gosh lol.
OK, anyway, here we go.
I’ve been reading Solo Leveling. Yay-hey! Remember, someone had to swing an 8 kg. sword because of this webtoon? Does it feel like it’s paying off that people actually read it because of you? Just kidding though.
But, seriously, I love the thing. I’m so grateful that you guys got the opportunity to do that, so now I found something I really really enjoy.
You know what I really love about all this? It’s how I can understand those things in Echo MV more and more now. I know what dragon was in Eric’s scene now.
I love that feeling when your faves introduce you to your future faves, like you keep unlocking your favorite things through your current favorite thing.
I just wish I had someone to talk about it with. Someone who would talk deeper about these things and not just “oh that guy looks good during that scene” or something. I wanna talk about trivial things in detail as if it’s the most important and most fascinating thing in the world and be in that moment of fascination. I’m a little jealous of you and how you get to discuss books and stuff with your teacher. I don’t have that kind of relationship with mine.
I’m an English major though (well, was.) I miss uni life, or specifically, I miss that time when my friends and I had a group project where we had to watch things and analyze them. For our Practical Criticism class, we had to choose any piece of media to analyze and apply the literary theories we studied in the previous semester to it. It had to be short and if it’s a video, it has to be around 10 minutes or shorter. My friends let me choose and I decided on an episode of Steven Universe. I know you love Adventure Time, but I don’t know if you’ve watched Steven Universe. Yes, ok, you know it.
Just in case you haven’t, Steven Universe started off super cute. There are these crystal gems who are aliens with magical power who love the earth and try their best to protect it. But, like, things get intense.
So, the episode I chose is Sworn to the Sword, and in the presentation, we talked about gender roles, queer theory, psychoanalytic theory (there was symbolism in there that we thought Freud would enjoy and there’s also a scene with Freudian slip), and, oh, we threw marxism feminism in there as well. I had so much fun watching it with my friends and trying to catch everything and decide if they mean something. (Side note; have you ever received a fan letter this nerdy?)
I miss that. I’m still close with my friends and we talk deeply about these things sometimes, but it’s not as fun because we live far away now and we consume different contents and I can’t make them sit through my favorite animations anymore. (Btw, Hilda on netflix is nice.)
A little sad, but it’s fine. It’s a part of growing up and yada yada yada. It’s really fine bc I now write letters talking about random things to a k-pop idol. Now, THAT’S adulthood.
That’s it for now. Thank you for taking time to read these letters. Hope your bruises will heal in no time!
Until next time,
Ryna x
