Intelligent, talented hard-working women are constantly being marginalised in the workplace (some never gain employment) purely because they are judged as being too fat to be of any benefit. A recent study conducted by Michigan University revealed that women considered obese by employers are less likely to progress at work than their slimmer counterparts.

Opinions expressed included, 'Being overweight shows a certain laxness' and 'Being overweight is equated to some degree with sloth'.

 

If employers are to reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, the bottom line needs to be that the best person should fill the job without body aesthetics getting in the way. 'If you've got the talent and the skills for a job, then unless there's a medical issue - size and looks should not influence an application,' says Wardle.
