그러면 우주(宇宙)는 무엇을 위하여 있으며, 그의 중심은 무엇일 것인가? 그것은 바로 인간인 것이다. 그러므로 하나님은 인간을 창조하시고 나서 피조세계를 주관하라고 말씀하셨다(창 1:28). 

만일 피조세계에 인간이 존재하지 않는다면, 그 피조세계는 마치 보아 줄 사람이 없는 박물관에 비할 수 있을 것이다. 박물관의 모든 진열품들은, 그것들을 감상하고 사랑하며 기뻐해 줄 수 있는 인간이 있음으로써 비로소 역사적인 유물로서 존재할 수 있는 인연적인 관계가 그것들 사이에 성립되어, 각각 그 존재의 가치를 나타내게 되는 것이다. 만일 거기에 그 중심 되는 인간이 없다면 그것들이 무슨 존재의 의의를 가질 수 있을 것인가? 인간을 위주로 한 피조세계의 경우도 이와 조금도 다름이 없다.

즉 인간이 있어 가지고 피조물을 형성하고 있는 모든 물질의 근본과 그 성격을 밝히고 분류함으로써 비로소 그것들이 상호간에 합목적적인 관계를 맺을 수 있고, 나아가서는 인간이 있어야만 동식물이나 수륙만상(水陸萬象)이나 우주를 형성하고 있는 모든 성좌(星座)들의 정체가 구분되어 그것들이 인간을 중심하고 합목적적인 관계를 가질 수 있게 되는 것이다. 그리하여 물질은 인간의 육체에 흡수되어 그의 생리적인 기능을 유지하게 하는 요소가 되며, 삼라만상은 인간의 안락한 생활환경을 만들어 주는 자료가 되는 것이다.

이것들은 모두 인간의 피조세계에 대한 형상적인 중심으로서 관계이지만, 이밖에 또 성상적인 중심으로서의 관계가 있다. 전자를 육적인 관계라고 하면, 후자는 정신적 또는 영적인 관계인 것이다.

물질로 형성된 인간의 생리적 기능이 마음의 지(知)·정(情)·의(意)에 완전히 공명되는 것은, 물질도 역시 지·정·의에 공명될 수 있는 요소를 가지고 있다는 사실을 입증하는 것이다. 이러한 요소들이 물질의 성상을 이루고 있기 때문에 삼라만상은 각각 그 정도의 차는 있으나 모두 지·정·의의 감응체인 것이다.

우리가 자연계의 미(美)에 도취하여 그와의 혼연일체의 신비경(神秘境)을 체험하게 되는 것은, 인간은 피조물의 이러한 성상의 중심도 되는 것이기 때문이다. 인간은 이와 같이 피조세계의 중심으로 창조되었기 때문에 하나님과 인간이 합성일체화한 자리가 바로 천주의 중심이 되는 자리인 것이다.

それでは、宇宙は何のためにあるのであり、その中心は何であるのだろうか。それは、まさしく人間である。ゆえに、神は人間を創造されたのち、被造世界を主管せよ（創一・28）と言われた。

もしも、被造世界に人間が存在しないならば、その被造世界は、まるで、見物者のいない博物館のようなものとなってしまう。つまり、博物館のすべての陳列品は、それらを鑑賞し、愛し、喜んでくれる人間がいて初めて、歴史的な遺物として存在し得るところの因縁的な関係が、それらの間で結ばれ、各々その存在の価値を表すことができるのである。もしも、そこに、その中心となる人間が存在しないとすれば、それらはいったいいかなる存在意義をもつであろうか。人間を中心とする被造世界の場合も、これと少しも変わるところはない。
 
すなわち、人間が存在して、被造物を形成しているすべての物質の根本とその性格を明らかにし、分類することによって初めて、それらはお互いに、合目的的な関係を結ぶことができるのである。さらにまた、人間が存在することによって初めて、動植物や水陸万象や宇宙を形成しているすべての星座などの正体が区別でき、それらが人間を中心として、合目的的な関係をもつことができるのである。

それから物質は人間の肉体に吸収されて、その生理的な機能を維持させる要素となり、森羅万象は人間の安楽な生活環境をつくるための材料となるのである。これらはみな、人間の被造世界に対する形状的な中心としての関係であるが、これ以外にも、また、性相的な中心としての関係がある。前者を肉的な関係であるというならば、後者は精神的、または霊的な関係である。

物質から形成された人間の生理的機能が、心の知情意に完全に共鳴するのは、物質もやはり、知情意に共鳴できる要素をもっているという事実を立証するものにほかならない。このような要素が、物質の性相を形成しているために、森羅万象は、各々その程度の差こそあれ、すべてが知情意の感応体となっている。

我々が自然界の美に陶酔して、それらと渾然一体の神秘境を体験できるのは、人間が被造物のこのような性相の中心ともなるからである。人間は、このように、被造世界の中心として創造されたために、神と人間が合性一体化した位置が、まさしく天宙の中心となる位置なのである。

What is the purpose of the universe? What is its center? The answer to both questions is none other than human beings. This is why God, after creating human beings, commanded them to have dominion over the universe (Gen. 1:28).

If there were no people to appreciate the universe, then it could be likened to a museum without any visitors. The articles on display in a museum attain their true value and are cherished as historical relics only when there are people who appreciate, love and take delight in them. Their relationship with human beings gives value to their existence. If there were no one to appreciate them, then what meaning would their existence have? The same holds true for the universe, whose lords are human beings.

The diverse things in creation enter into mutual relationships with a common purpose when human beings discover the source and nature of matter, and when they identify and classify plants and animals of the water, land and air, and all the stars in the sky.

Their common purpose is realized when they are assimilated into the human body as elements essential for people to maintain their physiological functions, and when they participate in the construction of a comfortable living environment for people.
 
In these and other ways, human beings stand as the center of the created universe in terms of its external form. In addition, people relate to the universe from their position as the internal center. While the relationships discussed above are physical relationships, here we consider mental or spiritual relationships.

The human body, though consisting of matter, fully responds physiologically to the emotion, intellect and will of the human mind. This demonstrates that matter has within itself elements which resonate with emotion, intellect and will – elements which constitute the internal nature of matter.

This is the reason all things in the universe respond to human emotion, intellect and will, albeit to different degrees. We become intoxicated with the beauty of the natural world and experience the rapture of mystical union.

We experience this because we are the center of the internal natures of all things in the natural world. Human beings are thus created as the center of the universe, and the place where God and human beings become completely one is the center of the cosmos.
