Have you ever experienced a moment when a small act of kindness changed your entire day? Last month, I experienced firsthand how helping others can come back to you in the most unexpected ways.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. The sky was dark, and the rain was pouring down heavily. I was walking home from school, luckily holding a big umbrella. As I turned the corner near the subway station, I saw an elderly woman. She was holding a heavy grocery bag in one hand, trying desperately to cover her head with a small newspaper with the other. She was getting soaked.
Without hesitation, I walked up to her and shared my umbrella.
"Let me help you with that, Grandma," I said, holding the umbrella over her head and gently taking her heavy bag.
She looked up at me with a bright smile and said, "Oh, thank you so much, young man. You are very kind."
We walked together for about ten minutes until we reached her apartment building. My right shoulder was completely wet because I was leaning the umbrella toward her, but my heart felt incredibly warm.
The very next week, the tables were turned. I was staying late at the school library to study for my final exams. I lost track of time, and by the time I stepped outside, it was already pitch black and raining hard again. To my dismay, I realized I had left my umbrella in my classroom, which was now locked. I stood at the school main gate, feeling helpless and stressed about the next day's exam.
Just then, someone called out to me. "Hey! Do you need some help?"
It was Minho, a classmate I had never really talked to before. He was holding a large umbrella.
"I saw you standing here. Are you going toward the bus stop? Let's walk together," he said with a friendly grin.
As we walked side by side under his umbrella, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. I realized that the kindness I had given to someone else the week before had somehow made its way back to me.
Helping others is like a boomerang. When you throw it out into the world, it always finds a way to come back to you.
