There seem to be several stages of ‘being’ with clay. In the beginning it is a battle- the battle to impose one’s will on the clay, to coerce it to do as one wants. This often leads to the contrivance that is the mark of the young potter. We see a lot of this kind of work.
Then there is the period when the clay becomes the teacher- and the realization that the clay has a voice of its own- it is not necessary to fight it all the time. If one listens to that clay ‘voice’, then the learning and progress becomes a pleasure as the very nature of the material is revealed. The way becomes clearer.
Eventually a stage is reached in the artist’s relationship with clay where it becomes a true dialogue- a conversation between the maker and the made. The work becomes less complicated, and more profound. Seo Byong Chan has reached this stage in his most recent body of work, a body of work which shows such a confident trust in materials and processes that the outcome is a true collaboration of man and clay.
The response of the clay to cutting, turning and stretching energises the work- and provides a world of contrasts between the soft folded forms of the teapots, and the chipped facets on the vase forms and small boxes. The juxtaposition of these different faces of clay in Seo’s groupings helps us to understand more than just the finished object- it seems a metaphor for some aspect of life itself- a metaphor of discord and harmony. A quiet place for reflection.
After Seo forms the works, he subjects them to wood firing- a process that colours the surface, reveals the detail, but never is a dominant voice. As the artist himself says, it is like a ‘gorgeous makeup’. It has imparted to these pieces a timeless quality- a sense that they have always existed, that they will always exist.
As you take these quiet works into your homes, they will continue to reveal themselves- for they are most at home in that shared intimacy of the domestic space. They will reward you over and over again as they reveal their beautiful simplicity- they are simply beautiful.
