※ Carefully examine the videos, photos, and explanations of basic postures from Haedong Kumdo instructors who have trained for 20 to 30 years or more.
No matter how skilled one may be in cutting techniques or sword forms, if they do not understand the principles of body movement, they cannot truly grasp the starting point and ultimate goal of martial arts training.
In such cases, their explanations of basic postures tend to be limited, often including unnecessary or irrelevant details.
A more critical issue lies in the failure to recognize these limitations. If an instructor does not fully comprehend the essence of proper movement, students learning from them will also struggle to distinguish between correct and incorrect practice.
This lack of discernment between proper and improper training can hinder the depth of martial arts practice and limit overall progress.

Then, following Parts 1 and 2, I will now present Part 3 below for helping deeper understanding of Daedosae (대도세) among 12 kinds of basic stances .
B. In-depth Analysis of Daedose through Q&A - Part 3
Although it is possible to explain and express this topic in detail by dividing it into three categorized sections, here, I will briefly describe the recognition of the accuracy of the basic posture and provide a justifiable rationale and reasons for it.
1. Foot Position and Explanation
○ Both feet should be placed in a straight line.
Question 1) In the natural stance (Jayeonse), both feet are placed in a straight line. If one questions why the Daedose stance should also follow this alignment, they should experience the movement themselves by slightly widening the feet in opposite directions and attempting a vertical cut.
Question 2) Feel the area around the 3rd, 4th, and 5th lumbar through movement during the vertical cut.
Question 3) During each moment of the downward cut, focus on and sense the angle of the blade.
○ Both feet should be positioned at an inward angle of approximately 45 degrees to remain parallel.
Question 1) One should be able to explain why a 45-degree angle is necessary. Those questioning this should experiment by adjusting their feet from approximately 90 degrees to 0 degrees to experience the differences. This will allow each individual to determine the optimal inward foot positioning for their body.
Question 2) Observe which parts of the muscles and bones are blocked or open, tense or relaxed, and whether the posture enhances efficiency or induces discomfort and potential harm.
○ If one does not understand or recognize the above concepts, they should restart their study of basic postures, regardless of their martial arts experience.
2. Daedo (Gyeonjeok) Stance with Meditation and Breathing
By aligning the flow of energy in the Daedosae stance with meditation and natural breathing, each individual refines their practice according to their personal goals. This can be explained in two ways, yet the fundamental principle remains the same.
○ When Holding a Sword
Discuss the correct flow of energy through sword positioning and breathing. In meditation through this stance, identify the axis of energy, its intended purpose, and explain the natural cycle from 1→2→3→2→1.
○ When Barehanded
Various hand postures can be used in the Daedose stance, but fundamentally, it is crucial to recognize the natural flow of energy through breathing and observe from a third-person perspective. (1→2→3→2→1)
3. Back & Forth Cutting with Breathing
Examine where the center of balance in both feet is located and assess the efficient height of the stance.
Explain the importance and role of breathing in cutting movements.
Consider the primary body parts involved in effective cutting.
Experience firsthand the principle that the sword follows the body, and the body follows the mind.
Once all the above aspects are understood, master the principle where the sword moves naturally and automatically in accordance with the body.
4. Cutting Techniques and Posture
Explain the techniques for back & forth cutings based on musculoskeletal principles and justify them.
Define the appropriate height for a stable stance and explain why this is necessary, using musculoskeletal principles as a basis.
5. Principles of Power Generation and Breathing
Analyze and explain the role and techniques of breathing in cutting based on musculoskeletal and exercise physiology principles.
C. Conclusion
Both instructors and general practitioners understand the importance of basic postures. However, the ability to answer the above questions will depend on one's level of experience and understanding.
Further explanations will be provided through Q&A sessions at international seminars, and detailed explanations with Daedose stance photos will be covered in the next chapter of part 4.
As a reference, I previously mentioned that movements in martial arts can be analyzed in terms of technique, philosophy, and healing.
This type of analysis is not limited to martial arts but can also be applied to dance, painting, music, cooking, calligraphy, and even various professional fields.
For instance, phrases like "Mom's homemade meals are healthy" or "Grandmother's hands are medicine hands" can be explained under the same logical continuum:
1. Method: Technique: Body →
2. Thought: Philosophy: Soul →
3. Love: Healing : Spirit
This is because all things in the world revolve around a single underlying principle.
