카리브해 베네수웰라 출신의 파파 위니(Papa Winnie)는 90년대 초반 리믹스의 음악이 사라지면서 리메이크 붐이 일어났는데 1993년 세계적으로 애창되고 있는 포크송 'You Are My Sunshine'을 레게음악으로 멋지게 리메이크하여 세계적인 인기를 모았다. 자메이카의 전통음악인 레게는 그 리듬이 단순해서 듣기 편한 댄스곡으로 많이들 인식하고 있는데, 실은 원주민들의 고통을 담은 저항음악이라고 한다. 파파 위니는 이러한 레게를 저항음악이라기 보다는 쉽고 재미있게 대중화시켜 팝레게라는 새로운 장르를 개척한 장본인이라고 할 수 있다. 당시 우리나라에서도 가수 김건모가 레게 리듬의 '핑계;라는 곡으로 대단한 인기를 얻고 있었는데, 후에 파파 위니가 이곡을 리메이크해 화제를 모은 적이 있다. 그러면 위니가 부른 '핑계'는 어떤 느낌인지 들어볼까....
