SHAH ALAM: The Tan Sri Muhyiddin (TSM) Golf Challenge taking place this year is going big, with a main sponsor and a chance for the winners to compete in major professional events.
Proton Holdings Berhad has come on board for the TSM Golf Challenge, currently considered one of the top amateur golf events in the country. And the organisers are offering the male and female winners a RM100,000 golf scholarship each.
This year’s TSM Golf Challenge will be staged at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Shah Alam from Dec 5-8.
This is the third consecutive year that the club is hosting the competition, which was first organised in 2006.
Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) president Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said the golf scholarship would allow the winners to compete in amateur meets in the Asian region.
“We have also signed memorandum of understanding with the Asian Tour, whereby the winners will get to play in the Maybank Malaysian Open and Iskandar Johor Open,” he said.
“TSM Golf Challenge has, over the last few years, attracted a good field comprising not just our top locals but also from outside the country.
“This year will be interesting as we are inviting the respective national amateur champions from the Asean region as well.
“Golf will be an Olympic sport again in 2016 in Brazil and we are optimistic this event can help further our aim to search for future top golfers for this country.”
Qualifying for the local amateurs will be tougher this year as they need to play in a minimum of 14 competitions before they can be considered for selection under the ranking system adopted by MGA.
The TSM will see a total prize of RM500,000 being handed out this year.
For the record, national golfer Kelly Tan of Johor claimed the girls’ title last year while Mohd Wafiyuddin Manaf of Kedah took the boys’ crown.
