THE DANCE OF BUDDHIST NUN
Cho Ji-hoon
The sheer white-silk bonnet is folded neatly into a butterfly.
Her shorn blue head hidden under the bonnet;
the color of her cheeks pretty enough to make one sad.
In the night, as the wax-candle quietly melts on an empty stage,
the moonlight wilts on every leaf of the pawlonia tree:
her sleeves are long against the broad sky,
her stocking-foot, slim as a cucumber seed, lightly bends and is lifted,
as if to fly as she turns.
Her black eyes rise softly
to gaze on the starlight in a distant sky,
two drops on her peach-blossom cheeks smear.
Sin is starlight even in the toil of this mundane world.
Arms bending, wrapping about, folding then stretching, her hands
gather as if in a holy prayer from the depth of her heart,
At midnight even the crickets stay up,
The sheer white-silk bonnet is folded neatly into a butterfly.

The Dance of Buddhist Nun
Flimsy white silken hood,
Folded softly and fairly,
I wonder it a flying butterfly!
Pale bluish color of shaven head
Hidden under flimsy silken hood,
The rosy gleams streaming down from her cheeks,
Reveal the sheer beauty, yet airing rather sorrows.
A night of yellow wax candle melting in silence,
On an empty stage,
From every paulownia leaves, the moon wanes;
For sleeves long spread to celestial widths,
And the tiny garment-socks, gently upfold’d,
Flying as if turning around;
With her dark pupils gracefully lifted high,
Focusing on light from one star in far sky;
On her cheeks of peach flowers, two glaring drops are about to flow;
Ah, stricken by mundane life, isn't it the tormenting agony of star glow!
Her hands, flexingly wrap around and extend again,
As if with palms together posing sacred bows, from deep in;
On this deep night, as crickets all awake cry,
Flimsy white silken hood,
Softly and fairly fold’d,
I wonder it a flying butterfly!

The nun's Dance
A gently - folded cowl
Of fine white gauze
Flaps like a butterfly.
Under her fine - gauze - cowl,
She shows her two cheeks
Sad and gorgeous.
On the night a wax - candle melts
Quietly in the empty hall,
The moon falls on every paulownia leaf.
Stretching wide sleeves long into the void,
She turns around and jumps as if on wings,
Revealing her gently - folded - up
Cucumber - seed - shaped socks.
Raising her black pupils gently
To focus on a star in the remote sky.
She wets her peach - blossom cheeks
With two dappling teardrops.
Although troubled by a worldly affair,
She lets her anguish shine like a star.
Her hands, bending, folding, and unfolding,
Seem to represent her devout prayer
Welling up in the depth of her heart.
Tonight crickets chirp midnight away;
A gently - folded cowl
Of fine white gauze
Flaps like a butterfly.

Her sleeves spread long to a celestial span to surround
And tiny garment-socks folded sprightly fly as if to turn around;
With her dark pupils gracefully lifted high,
Focusing on light from one star afar in the sky;
On her pretty cheeks of peach flowers, those two drops dazzling to gleam,
Though torn by mundane life, must reflect the tormenting agony of star beam!
