Although this message is addressed to Team 10 “상호상조,” it is, in truth, a message for everyone.
The purpose of this random card presentation assignment is as follows:
Using the six given cards, each team must collaboratively create a single story, work together to produce creative presentation materials (PPT), and effectively deliver that story to the audience for evaluation.
The evaluation criteria are as follows:
In other words, every team member must participate together. If one person does everything on behalf of the others, it will ultimately disadvantage the entire team.
Therefore, all team members must cooperate in order to do well.
After the presentation, the team leader must organize and submit the presentation materials along with reflections on the process via email. (Deadline: before class one week after the presentation.)
In addition, every team member must include this material in their final production book and clearly explain:
Now, let us examine the six cards given to Team 10 “상호상조”
The first card is “a rainy alley.”
This is the setting of the story. The entire story does not necessarily have to take place there. However, you should use the location itself or imagery associated with it as part of the narrative.
The next card is the character card: “a fleeing actor.”
Why is the actor running away?
This card requires you to establish the reason.
Please use your imagination to create the personality and circumstances of the actor, and explain why they are behaving this way.
The next card is the desire card:
“wanting to erase the past.”
Why would they want to erase the past?
Rather than thinking vaguely about erasing the past, it makes more sense to interpret this as wanting to erase the reason they are fleeing.
(Of course, this is not the only possible interpretation. I am not saying you must approach it this way. However, understanding this intention is important in learning how to build a coherent story.)
Next comes the obstacle card, which means something that interferes with the desire.
What was the desire again?
It was wanting to erase the reason for running away — in other words, wanting forgiveness, or wanting to escape and disappear without anyone knowing.
However, the obstacle chosen is:
“No one believes them.”
I think this is actually an excellent card.
If the protagonist insists on their innocence but no one believes them, the situation becomes much more difficult for the protagonist, and the audience feels greater sympathy.
Then how can this obstacle be incorporated into a story?
Usually, the protagonist would seek a helper in order to escape this situation.
However, that helper may reject or abandon them.
At that point, the protagonist must rely on their own efforts to achieve their desire — proving their innocence and continuing their escape.
Next is the choice card:
“study abroad.”
This is not an easy card to apply directly.
If the story suddenly becomes about studying abroad, even I would find it difficult to resolve naturally.
However, do not forget that this is a choice card.
This means it is a decision the protagonist must make.
In a situation where nobody believes them, the choice of whether to leave abroad or not will determine the outcome.
I believe the concept of “studying abroad” should be interpreted more broadly and creatively.
There are many ways to approach it, but personally, I think this card could be connected to illegal migration or smuggling oneself overseas.
Will the protagonist decide to flee overseas or not?
At this point, it is better to look at the final emotion card before deciding.
Fortunately, the final card is “love and hate.”
If the choice to flee overseas is meant to leave both the audience and the protagonist with feelings of love and hate, how should the story be structured?
Perhaps the protagonist may not simply choose between “go” or “not to go.”
They may even choose death himself.
The final card is “love and hate.”
This is the emotional conclusion created by the protagonist’s choices.
Please remember that the purpose of this assignment is to create a structure in which the protagonist’s choices and actions ultimately leave both the protagonist — and especially the audience — with these conflicting emotions.
To achieve this effectively, the reason for the protagonist’s escape should involve a supporting character capable of generating these feelings of love and hate. The setup of that relationship will become the key element that drives the ending emotionally.
In truth, during the previous class, I wanted to have more conversations with every team, but there was not enough time to provide detailed advice, discussion, or answer questions.
However, since Team 10 (“상호상조”) sent questions by email, I decided to use their case as an example, respond in this way, and share it as a café post so that it may help all of you who are currently working on your projects.
