엡 3:1~13

바울은 에베소 교회의 성도들에게 복음의 '비밀'을 이야기 합니다. 이미 바울의 글들을 통해 소개된 바이며 이것은 그리스도의 죽음과 부활에 관한 이야기입니다. 이 비밀의 핵심은 유대인과 이방인이 같은 터에 서서 같은 약속을 받고 같은 유업을 얻는다는 내용을 골자로 하고 있습니다. 곧 유대인과 이방인 사이에 차별이 없다는 것입니다.

전통적인 유대교의 토양에서 자란 이들에게 바울의 이 선언은 반유대적인 폭탄 선언으로 느껴집니다. 그들의 핵심가치인 율법에 근거한 할례와 안식일과 성전과 절기와 제사들을 송두리째 부정하고 있으며 공로없는 이방인들의 무임승차를 독려하는 주장을 합니다. 유대인들이 바울을 새로운 이단의 괴수로 지목하고 제거하려고 한 이유가 바로 유대교의 뿌리를 흔드는 이런 주장 때문입니다.

그러나 바로 이 지점에서 유대인과 이방인의 벽을 허무는 체험 곧 부활하신 예수님과의 만남이 뼛속깊이 바리새적 전통에 물든 바울의 격렬한 활동을 멈추고 180도 반대방향으로 달려가게한 동기가 됩니다. 그는 부활하신 그리스도를 만났고 예수가 나사렛 이단의 토양이 된 거짓 선지자가 아니라 살아계신 하나님의 아들임을 온 몸으로 확인합니다.

모든 이방인들이 기쁜 소식으로 받아들이는 '예수는 그리스도'라는 이름이 유독 유대인들의 반대에 부딪힌 이유입니다. 만일 예수를 그리스도로 받아들이고 이방인과의 막힌 담을 헐면 성전과 율법과 제사와 안식일과 할례와 절기가 빛을 잃습니다. 오직 예수와 십자가 그리고 부활외에는 그 무엇도 무가치하게 여겨집니다. 십자가의 승리는 부활의 아침으로 인해 재조명되며 만왕의 왕으로 등극하신 예수님은 온 우주의 주가 되십니다. 바울이 바리새적 전통과 가말리엘에서 배운 모든 학문마저 과감히 저버린 이유입니다.

바울의 평생의 소명은 예수의 십자가와 부활을 이방인들에게 전하며 유대교라는 필터없이 할례나 안식일로부터 자유로운 신앙 곧 그리스도 예수를 믿는 믿음으로만 얻어지는 자유를 선포하는 것이었습니다.

오늘날 우리는 이 믿음의 비밀을 댓가나 노력없이 곧 값없이 얻고 자유의 몸이 되었습니다. 그리스도의 비밀이 망하는 자들에게는 가리운 것이 되고 지식인들에게는 어리석은 것이 된다고 해도 예수님의 십자가를 따르는 선택을 주저하지 않는 성도님들 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Ephesians 3:1-13

Paul speaks to the saints of the Ephesian church about the 'mystery' of the Gospel. This has already been introduced through Paul's writings, and it is a story concerning the death and resurrection of Christ. The core of this mystery is that Jews and Gentiles stand on the same ground, receive the same promise, and obtain the same inheritance. In other words, there is no distinction between Jews and Gentiles.

To those raised in the soil of traditional Judaism, Paul's declaration felt like an anti-Jewish bombshell. It completely negated their core values based on the Law, such as circumcision, the Sabbath, the Temple, feasts, and sacrifices, and advocated for the unmerited participation of Gentiles. The reason Jews labeled Paul as the leader of a new heresy and sought to eliminate him was precisely these claims, which shook the very roots of Judaism.

However, it was precisely at this juncture that an experience—an encounter with the resurrected Jesus—which tore down the wall between Jews and Gentiles, became the motivation that halted the fervent activities of Paul, deeply ingrained in Pharisaic tradition, and propelled him in the complete opposite direction. He met the resurrected Christ and confirmed with his entire being that Jesus was not a false prophet, who was the foundation of the Nazarene heresy, but the living Son of God.

This is why the name 'Jesus is the Christ', which all Gentiles received as good news, uniquely met with opposition from Jews. If they were to accept Jesus as the Christ and tear down the dividing wall with Gentiles, the Temple, the Law, sacrifices, the Sabbath, circumcision, and feasts would lose their significance. Nothing would be considered valuable except Jesus, the cross, and the resurrection. The victory of the cross is re-examined in the light of the resurrection morning, and Jesus, enthroned as King of kings, becomes the Lord of the entire universe. This is why Paul boldly abandoned all his Pharisaic traditions and all the learning he acquired from Gamaliel.

Paul's lifelong mission was to proclaim the cross and resurrection of Jesus to the Gentiles, and to declare a freedom of faith—a faith obtained solely by believing in Christ Jesus—free from the filter of Judaism, without circumcision or the Sabbath.

Today, we have received this mystery of faith freely, without cost or effort, and have been set free. Even if the mystery of Christ remains hidden from those who are perishing and appears foolish to the learned, I pray in the name of the Lord that you will be saints who do not hesitate to choose to follow the cross of Jesus.
