Today's English expression‎ is:  diamond in the rough. 

Diamond in the rough means someone who has great potential, but isn't refined and polished yet. 

Here is an example conversation: 

Person A:  Amy is a talented girl, but I know she can do better.
Person B:  I agree.  She can develop her piano playing skills and improve her appearance,

                 if only she would try and put some effort and confidence into herself.
Person A:  She's like a diamond in the rough…. One day she will realize her potential

                 and then everyone will see the beautiful, talented girl for who she is.
