Hexagram 4 : Meng(Mountain over Water / Youthful Folly).
▣ A spring gushes forth at the foot of the mountain, symbolizing youthful Folly(Meng).
Thus, the superior person acts with decisive determination to cultivate virtue.
[Explanation]
The spring emerging from beneath the mountain respresents raw,
undeveloped potential―just as a spring flows steadily into a river,
an uncultivated mind requires guidance to reach maturity.
Emulating this pattern, a noble character(or wise person) with resolute purpose
(果行,과행 - decisive action) to nurture and build inner moral character
(育德,육덕, -virtue cultivation).
[Commentary]
As spring water gushes forth for the first time deep in the mountain foothills,
it represents Meng(蒙,몽 - ignorance / youthful folly).
Seeing this, the superior person acts with decisive determination on matters that must
be done―just as a tiny spring eventually flows into a great river―and expands their noble
character to be grand and tall like an immovable mountain[果行育德, 과행육덕 -
decisive action and virtue cultivation].
Stating "a spring comes out" rather than simply "there is a spring under the mountain"
highlights the state of emerging for the first time without yet being fully developed
or knowledgeable.
For this reason, it signifies expanding the initial threads of goodness that begin
within an ignorant, uncultivated state.
Taking decisive action corresponds to the movement of Kan(坎,감 - ☵, Water),
while culltivating virtue corresponds to the stillness of Gen(艮,간 - ☶, Mountain).
Saying " a spring gushes beneath the mountain" focuses on the mountain itself.
Because the spring has just emerged beneath the mountain and cannot
yet flow freely, it is a state of ignorance(Meng).
The mountain is like a person, and the spring is like a person's thoughts.
This imagery depicts thoughts being set in motion before their direction
can be clearly discerned.
Acting decisively is like clearing a channel for the stream to flow,
whereas cultivating virtue is like soil piling high to build a mountain.
Note also that Toegye's "Mongcheon(蒙泉,몽천)"is famous for its delicious water.
Refer also the interpretations of "Decisive action and virtue cultivation"(果行育德, 과행육덕)
by scholars such as Gong Mook-dang(恭默堂,공묵당), Sik-san(息山,식산)
and Hui-gok(希谷,희곡).
Historical precedents for the Meng hexagram(蒙卦,몽괘) can be found in King Cheng
of Zhou(周 成王, 주 성왕) and the Duke of Zhou(周公,주공).
King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty cited the Meng hexagram regarding the education
of the Crown Prince(元子,원자), stating :
"Righteously guiding the young is the achievement of a sage, Nurturing a pure,
undeveloped youth with proper guidance yields the accomplishment of becoming a sage.
Therefore, appoint mmmmen like Lee Seo(李舒,이서) and Gwon Geun(權近,권근)
as tutors for the Crown Prince, and keep flatterers away."
