K - 백성은 멀리 서 있고 모세는 하나님이 계신 흑암으로 가까이 가니라—출애굽기 20:21

K - 당신이 산 아래에서 모든 동네 사람들과 함께 촘촘히 서 있다고 상상해보십시오. 천둥 번개가 치고 귀청을 울리는 나팔소리가 들립니다. 그리고 불꽃 가운데 하나님이 산꼭대기에 내려오십니다. 산 정상이 연기로 가려지고 산 전체가 흔들리기 시작하자, 당신도 무서워 떨기 시작합니다(출 19:16-20).

시내산 근처에서 이 무시무시한 경험을 한 이스라엘 백성들은 모세에게 “당신이 우리에게 말씀하소서 우리가 들으리이다 하나님이 우리에게 말씀하시지 말게 하소서 우리가 죽을까 하나이다”(19절)라고 간청합니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 모세가 자기들과 전능하신 하나님 사이를 중재해 줄 것을 요청합니다. 그래서 “백성은 멀리 서 있고 모세는 하나님이 계신 흑암으로 가까이 갔습니다”(21절). 모세는 하나님과 만난 후 하나님의 메시지를 산 아래에 있는 백성들에게로 가져왔습니다.

오늘날 우리는 시내산에서 엄청난 위대함을 보여주신 똑같은 그 하나님을 예배합니다. 하나님은 온전히 거룩하시나 우리의 죄성은 너무나 커서 우리는 하나님과 관계를 맺을 수가 없습니다. 우리를 그대로 내버려두셨다면 우리 역시 공포에 떨 수밖에 없었을 것입니다. 그러나 예수님이 우리 죄를 몸소 짊어지시고 죽으시고 다시 부활하심으로 우리로 하여금 하나님을 알 수 있게 해주셨습니다(고전 15:3-4). 지금도 예수님은 우리를 위해 거룩하시고 완전하신 하나님 사이에서 중보 역할을 담당하고 계십니다(롬 8:34; 딤전 2:5).

E - Imagine standing at the bottom of a mountain, elbow-to-elbow with everyone in your community. Thunder and lightning flash; you hear an earsplitting trumpet blast. Amid flames, God descends on the mountaintop. The summit is enveloped in smoke; the entire mountain begins to shake, and so do you (Ex. 19:16-20).

When the Israelites had this terrifying experience near Mount Sinai, they begged Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die”(20:19). The Israelites were asking Moses to mediate between them and the Almighty. “So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was”(v.21). After meeting with God, Moses brought God’s messages back down the mountain to the people below.

Today, we worship the same God who displayed His staggering greatness on Mount Sinai. Because God is perfectly holy and we are desperately sinful, we cannot relate to Him. Left to ourselves we too would (and should) shake in terror. But Jesus made it possible for us to know God when He took our sins on Himself, died, and rose again (1 Cor. 15:3-4). Even now, Jesus is the go-between for us to a holy and perfect God (Rom. 8:34; 1 Tim. 2:5). —Jennifer Benson Schuldt

T - Kunwari’y nakatayo ka sa paanan ng bundok at kasama mo doon ang lahat ng tao sa inyong lugar. Tapos, biglang kumulog at kumidlat. may narinig kang tunog ng trumpeta na nakakabingi sa lakas. nakita mong bumaba ang Diyos sa bundok sa anyong apoy. Nabalot ng usok ang bundok, nayanig ito, pati na din ikaw(Exodo 19:16-20).
Naranasan iyong ng mga Israelita ng nasa may bundok sila ng Sinai. Natakot sila sa Diyos kaya nakiusap sila kay Moises, “Kayo na lang ang magsalita sa amin at makikinig kami, huwag na po ang Diyos at baka mamatay kami”(Exdo 20:19). Nakiusap ang mga Israelita kay Moises na siya ang mamagitan sa kanila at sa Diyos. Kaya “ang taong bayan ay tumayo sa malayo at si Moises ay lumapit sa ... kinaroroonan ng Diyos”(v.21). Nang matapos ang pakikipag-usap ng Diyos kay Moises, sinabi ni Moises sa mga tao ang ipinasasabi ng Diyos.
Sinasamba natin ang Diyos na nagpakita ng Kanyang kahanga-hangang kaluwalhatian sa Bundok ng Sinai. Banal ang Diyos at makasalanan tayo kaya hindi natin Siya lubos na nauunawaan. Tulad ng mga Israelita, maaaring manginig din tayo sa pagkatakot sa Diyos. Pero sa pamamagitan ni Jesus, maaari nating makilala ang Diyos. Pinasan ni Jesus ang ating mga kasalanan, namatay Siya para sa atin at nabuhay na muli(1Corinto 15:3-4). Kahit ngayon, namamagitan pa din si Jesus sa ating banal at perpektong Diyos(Roma 8:34; 1 Timoteo 2:5).
