Why do we do ‘Moon House Burning’?

On the night of the first full moon of the lunar year, a huge pillar of fire rises on Haeundae Beach.

“What is that? Did an oil tank explode?”Foreign tourists might be surprised. However, the atmosphere is completely different when you get closer. Behind the cone-shaped flames, women in hanbok elegantly dance 'Ganggangsullae' and a pungmul band plays lively rhythms.

The reason for 'Moon House Burning' is to ward off bad luck and send wishes for the year to the sky. When the moon house made of pine branches and bamboo burns brightly, the withered passion in our hearts is also revived.

If you also watched the Moon House Burning Festival held on Haeundae Beach on the evening of February 12, you can have a hot and bright year like a firework all year long.

'달집 태우기'는 왜 할까요?

정월 대보름 밤, 해운대 백사장에 거대한 불기둥이 솟아오른다.

 “저거 뭐죠? 기름탱크가  폭발한 건가요?” 외국인 관광객이라면 깜짝 놀랄 법도 하다. 하지만 가까이 다가가면 분위기는 사뭇 다르다. 원뿔 모양의 불길 뒤에서 한복 차림의 여인들은 우아하게 ‘강강수월래’를 돌고, 풍물패는 신명 나는 장단을 울린다.

‘달집 태우기’를 하는 이유는 액운을 물리치는 동시에 한 해의 소망을 하늘에 띄우기 위해서이다. 생솔가지와 대나무로 지은 달집이 활활 타오를 때, 우리 마음속 시든 열정도 되살아나는 것이다.

만약 당신도 지난 2월 12일 저녁, 해운대 비치에서 열린 달집 태우기 축제를 지켜보았다면, 올해 내내 불꽃처럼 뜨겁고 환한 한 해가 될 수 있겠다.
