On a warm summer's evenin' on a train bound for nowhere, I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep. So we took turns a starin' out the window at the darkness'Til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak. He said, "Son, I've made a life out of readin' people's faces, And knowin' what their cards were by the way they held their eyes. And if you don't mind my sayin', I can see you're out of aces. You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away and know when to run. You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table. There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done. Ev'ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin' Is knowin' what to throw away and knowing what to keep. 'Cause ev'ry hand's a winner and ev'ry hand's a loser, And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep. And when he'd finished speakin', he turned back towards the window,Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep. And somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even. But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep. You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away and know when to run. You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table. There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

따뜻한 여름밤 행선지도 모르는 기차에 올라 겜블러를 만났다. 우린 둘다 잠을 청하기도 싫을 정도로 피곤해서 창문 밖만 보고 있었다. 그러다 지루함에 지쳐갈때쯤 그가 말문을 열었다. "나는 사람들의 얼굴을 읽으며 평생을 살아왔다. 그들의 눈을 보고 그들의 패를 읽었고, 괜찮다면 솔직히 말하지. 자넬 보니 자네에게 에이스가 없다는 걸 알 수 있어. 위스키를 나눠준다면 조언을 좀 해주지." 그래서 난 내 위스키병을 건내줬고 그는 마지막 한모금 마저 들이켰다. 그리고는 담배와 라이타를 요청했다. 밤은 고요해졌고 무표정한 모습으로 그는 말했다. "게임을 할거면 제대로 배우고 시작해야 한다." 언제 지를지를 알고, 언제 죽을지를 알아야 된다. 언제 자리를 떠야 될지도 그리고 언제 도망가야 될지도. 테이블에 앉아서는 절대 돈을 세지 말아라. 카드 딜이 끝나면 언제나 충분한 시간이 있을 것이다.   모든 겜블러들은 살아남는 방법을 알고 있지. 그건 어떤 패를 플레이하고 어떤 패를 버리느냐에 달린거야. 어떤 패던 이길 수 있고 질 수 있으니깐.. 죽는 상황에선 너도 모르게 자고 있다가 죽는게 최상의 방법이다.   그렇게 말한 후 그는 창문가로 몸을 돌리고는 담배를 끄고 잠을 청했다. 겜블러는 언젠지 모르지만 중간에 본전을 찾았고 그의 마지막 말에서 난 나에게 필요한 에이스를 찾아냈다. 언제 지를지를 알고, 언제 죽을지를 알아야 된다. 언제 자리를 떠야 될지도 그리고 언제 도망가야 될지도. 테이블에 앉아서는 절대 돈을 세지 말아라. 카드 딜이 끝나면 언제나 충분한 시간이 있을 것이다.
