Global Food Scare
The food scare following the harmful chemical melamine being found in Chinese dairy products has hit consumers around the world, especially mothers and their children.
Extra attention is being paid to food labels and nutrition facts on products by people worried about their health.
Searching for local foodstuffs not containing Chinese ingredients or carrying ``Made in China'' labels at supermarkets has become common practice. Chinese foodstuffs are now shunned but the major foodstuff factory of the world's produce still manages to reach dining tables.
More than 53,000 babies in China have experienced illness due to the side effects of melamine-tainted milk. Many countries are hurrying to detect the harmful ingredient in milk and snacks and have partly banned imports of Chinese food products.
In this regard, the Chinese government is requested to show its sincerity and force local food companies to discard a profit-first attitude.
Last but not least, the Korean government should not sit on its hands. It must be more alert to prevent harmful or substandard foreign foodstuffs from flowing into the country.
More concrete safety measures should be worked out to help people, especially mothers, buy food products without fear.
Now, Korea is being battered by the vortex of a global financial crisis with the sudden fluctuation of foreign exchange rates, and panic gripping the credit market in the United States. The Bush administration plans to buy bank stocks with G-7 finance leaders calling for urgent action to end the financial crisis.
As the instability looms large, people around the world sigh over what will come as an aftermath of this crisis.
But, the global foodstuffs crisis is more acute and deplorable than the financial turmoil because of one simple truth: ``Once we lose our health, we lose all."
1. What is your favorite food? What tasty do you like?
2. What are you concerning about, when you eat food?
3. do you believe the word on food labels? If not, why?
4. what is the main problem on the melamine? whose crime? importer, exporter or consumers?
5. what will you do from now on, if you are very worried about it!!??
