Bible Reading - Esther 3:1~7

3:1 After these events, King Xerxes honored Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, elevating him and giving him a seat of honor higher than that of all the other nobles.

이 사건 이후, 크세르크세스 왕은 아가그 사람(the Agagite) 하므다다의 아들 하만을 높여 모든 귀족들보다 더 높은 명예로운 자리를 주었다.

3:2 All the royal officials at the king's gate knelt down and paid honor to Haman, for the king had commanded this concerning him.

왕의 문에 있는 모든 왕의 신하들이 왕이 하만에 대하여 이렇게 명령했기 때문에 하만에게 무릎을 꿇고 경의를 표했다.

But Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor.

그러나 모르드개는 무릎을 꿇지도 그에게 경의를 표하지도 않았다.

3:3 Then the royal officials at the king's gate asked Mordecai, "Why do you disobey the king's command?"

그러자 왕의 문에 있던 왕의 신하들이 모르드개에게 "왕의 명령에 순종치 않는 이유가 무엇이냐?"고 물었다.

3:4 Day after day they spoke to him but he refused to comply(응하다,준수하다).

그들은 날마다 그에게 말했지만 그는 따르기를 거부했다.

Therefore they told Haman about it to see whether Mordecai's behavior would be tolerated, 

그러므로 그들은 모르드개의 행위가 용납될 것인지 보기 위해 하만에게 이 사실을 알렸다.

for he had told them he was a Jew. 그는 자신이 유대인이라고 그들에게 말했기 때문이다.

3:5 When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor, 

하만이 모르드개가 무릎을 꿇지도 그에게 경의를 표하지도 않는 것을 보았을 때

he was enraged. 그는 격노했다.

3:6 Yet having learned who Mordecai's people were,

그러나 모르드개의 사람들이 누구인지 알게 되어

he scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai.

그는 모르드개만 죽이는 것을 비웃었다.

Instead Haman looked for a way to destroy all Mordecai's people, the Jews, throughout the whole kingdom of Xerxes.

그 대신 하만은 크세르크세스의 왕국 전역에 있는 모르드개의 모든 백성, 즉 유대인들을 멸절시킬 방법을 찾았다.

3:7 In the twelfth year of King Xerxes, in the first month, the month of Nisan, 

크세르크세스 왕의 열두째 해 첫째 달, 니산월에

they cast the pur (that is, the lot) in the presence of Haman to select a day and month.

그들은 하만 앞에서 푸르(즉, 제비)를 던져서 날짜와 달을 정했다.

And the lot fell on the twelfth month, the month of Adar.

그리고 그 제비는 열두째 달, 곧 아다르월에 뽑혔다.
