King Of All Pocket PCs
Only one can be the best. For us, it's the Compaq iPAQ H3870 handheld with a wireless card.

If you're looking for the power of a desktop in a pocket-size package, or you've been wanting a handheld that makes full use of the next generation of wireless connectivity, you would be wise to seek out Compaq's iPAQ Pocket PC H3870, which gives you both. There are two words that sum up our feelings on this sleek, handy gadget: "We want."
Power In Your Pocket
The H3870 uses the 206-MHz StrongARM 32-bit RISC processor from Intel Corp., the industry standard for most pocket PCs. The color reflective LCD offers 65,536 colors and looks beautiful and sharp in bright daylight or with the built-in backlite. But the backlite sucks juice from this iPAQ's 1400-mAh lithium polymer battery, so Compaq has included a sensor that detects the brightness of the ambient light and adjusts the screen's brightness accordingly.
The H3870 has plenty of room for programs and documents--you get 64MB RAM and 32MB ROM--which is good because you'll want to load it up with impressive software such as IBM's Pocket ViaVoice, which is included. ViaVoice lets you control the iPAQ through voice recognition. Simply push the Record button on the left side of the device and say, for example, "Lunch at noon with Cathie." Then watch the appointment show up on the calendar. Here at PM we got a kick out of that trick, but then we're paid to be geeks. Other input methods include the stylus and touchscreen, and Pocket PC 2002's transcriber function, which reads your handwriting.
As impressive as the out-of-the-box specifications are, the H3870 allows expansion through either a built-in SecureDigital (SD) card slot at the top of the device or a CompactFlash expansion sleeve, available for $40 on top of the $649 price tag. SD cards are postage stamp-size memory chips that come in either 64MB or 128MB sizes, and are good for storing media such as MP3s, movies and pictures. CompactFlash cards, being a little larger, require the expansion sleeve (which adds a bit of bulk to the svelte 6.7-ounce iPAQ), but they also let you attach hardware such as a camera or GPS receiver.
Staying In Touch
The H3870 is a Bluetooth-enabled device, meaning it can communicate with computers, cellphones, and other devices over radio waves--provided they also are Bluetooth-enabled. There aren't many such devices yet, but in the future iPAQ could automatically send phone numbers to a cellphone, or even act as a set of digital keys to a Bluetooth car.
Final Word
Sure, there are other pocket PCs out there with similar processor and memory specifications, but few approach the expandability, style and coolness of the H3870. We like our tech gadgets to look to the future, which Compaq has done with this Bluetooth device, instead of merely keeping up with the competition. So for these and many more reasons, we declare (for now) the iPAQ H3870 the King Of All Pocket PCs.
