Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 3:7~13 - To the Church in Philadelphia - A faithful church of little power, Receiving Only Praise from Jesus
Revelation 3:7~13 – Background and Meaning of Christian Historical Perspectives, Late 18th to mid of 19th century, 1798~1844, Era of Global Missions
○ The era of missions - The time-historical background of Christianity is from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century (1798~1844), and during this time, the message of <Revelation> 3:7~13 is conveying that the era of missions came and that the gospel of Christ went out to the world (global). This time was the most prosperous era of evangelistic preaching in the history of the Christian church. Looking at the pioneers of early evangelism, numerous evangelists such as John Wesley (1703~1791) and George Whitefield (1714~1770) in England, and Jonathan Edwards (1703~1758) in the United States came out and preached the gospel. In particular, Wesley expressed his ardent missionary spirit by saying, "The world is my evangelism field" and restored the faith of the Christian church to the right path.
○ Brotherly love - The church in Philadelphia, which appears in the sixth place, is a church that receives only praise from Jesus Christ without any rebuke. Philadelphia has the meaning of 'brotherly love’. To spread the gospel globally is to convey ‘brotherly love’.
○ The Bible Society - Since then, the Bible Society or Missionary Society, first established in England in 1804, began to arise worldwide. The translation of the Bible into all languages of the world began to take place.
☞ Tyranny of the Catholic Church - At that time, the Catholic Church only recognized the interpretation of the Bible by the pope and priests, and strictly prohibited the interpretation of the Bible by ordinary believers. The Hebrew and Greek Bibles were not allowed to be read, and the church services was held in only Latin, which was unknown to layperson, so layperson could not understand the word of God, namely, door to God was closed. Those who challenged the Catholic Church were punished with a “social death penalty” called “excommunication”. However, the missionaries had to change the threat of the closed door into the blessing of the opened door only by relying on the words of the Bible.
○ Spread the gospel, send missionaries - The gospel was preached all over the world, and missionaries began to be dispatched globally. William Carrey (1761~1834), a British Baptist missionary, went to India in 1793, and he was called the father of modern Protestant missions. Robert Morrison (1782~1834), from Scotland in England, first went to China in 1807 and translated the New Testament into Chinese in 1813.
○ British Scottish missionary Robert Moffat (1795~1883) arrived in Cape Town, Kenya, Africa after a 85 days voyage with four missionaries in 1819, and he became the founder of the South African Missions (SAM). Following him, David Livingstone (1813~1873), a British missionary, was dispatched to Africa in 1840 as a medical evangelist of the London Evangelism Association.
○ In this way, missionary groups began to be organized in each continent, and it was around this time that the Sunday school movement began to spread out. It can be seen that this was the time when ‘brotherly love’ was shown transcending denominations and borders for world missions.
○ Currently, it is a fact that many of the residents of Philadelphia are Christians so far even though they were suffering from fierce paganism as Islam [Reference – Reformation ING: Revelation 3 - Philadelphia Age & Geographical Background].
