1. 이제 이 달 이십사일에 이스라엘 자손이 모여 금식하며 굵은 베옷을 입고 흙을 뒤집어쓰며

Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.

2. 이스라엘의 씨가 모든 타국인으로부터 자신을 분리하고 일어서서 자기 죄와 자기 조상들의 불법을 자백하니라.

And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. 

3. 또 그들이 낮의 사분의 일 동안에는 자기 자리에 서서 {주} 자기들의 [하나님]의 율법 책에서 낭독하고 또 다른 사분의 일 동안에는 자백하며 {주} 자기들의 [하나님]께 경배하니라.

And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God [one] fourth part of the day; and [another] fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.

4. 그때에 레위 사람들 중에서 예수아와 바니와 갓미엘과 세바냐와 분니와 세레비야와 바니와 그나니는 계단에 서서 큰 소리로 {주} 자기들의 [하나님]께 부르짖고

Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, [and] Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God. 

5. 또 그때에 레위 사람 예수아와 갓미엘과 바니와 하삽니야와 세레비야와 호디야와 세바냐와 브다히야는 이르기를, 일어서서 영원무궁토록 {주} 너희 [하나님]을 찬송할지어다. 주의 영화로운 이름 곧 모든 찬송이나 찬양보다 위로 높여진 그 이름을 찬송할지어다.

Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, [and] Pethahiah, said, Stand up [and] bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

6. 주 곧 주는 홀로 {주}시니 주께서 하늘과 하늘들의 하늘과 그것들의 모든 군대와 땅과 그 안의 모든 것과 바다들과 그 안의 모든 것을 지으시고 그것들을 다 보존하시오매 하늘의 군대가 주께 경배하나이다.

Thou, [even] thou, [art] LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all [things] that [are] therein, the seas, and all that [is] therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

7. 주는 {주} [하나님]이시니 주께서 전에 아브람을 택하사 갈대아 우르에서 데리고 나오시고 그에게 아브라함이라는 이름을 주셨으며

Thou [art] the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham;

8. 그의 마음이 주 앞에 신실함을 보시고 그와 언약을 맺으사 가나안 족속과 헷 족속과 아모리 족속과 브리스 족속과 여부스 족속과 기르가스 족속의 땅을 주되, 내가 말하거니와, 그것을 그의 씨에게 주리라고 하셨으며 주의 말씀들을 이루셨사오니 이는 주께서 의로우시기 때문이니이다.

And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give [it, I say], to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou [art] righteous:

9. 주께서 우리 조상들이 이집트에서 고난 받는 것을 보시며 홍해 끝에서 그들의 부르짖음을 들으시고

And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea;

10. 파라오와 그의 모든 신하와 그의 땅의 온 백성에게 표적들과 이적들을 보이셨사오니 이는 그들이 저들에게 교만히 행함을 주께서 아셨기 때문이니이다. 이와 같이 주께서 이름을 내심이 이 날과 같았나이다.

And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as [it is] this day.

11. 주께서 또 그들 앞에서 바다를 가르사 그들이 바다 가운데를 마른 땅 위로 지나가게 하시며 그들을 학대하던 자들을 힘센 물에 돌을 던지듯 깊음 속으로 던지시고

And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.

12. 또 그들을 낮에는 구름 기둥으로 인도하시고 밤에는 불기둥으로 인도하사 그들이 가야 할 길에서 그들에게 빛을 주셨사오며

Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.

13. 또 시내 산에 내려오시고 하늘에서부터 그들과 말씀하사 바른 법도와 참된 율법과 선한 법규와 명령을 그들에게 주시고

Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments: 

14. 또 주의 거룩한 안식일을 그들에게 알려 주시며 주의 종 모세의 손으로 훈계와 법규와 율법을 그들에게 명령하시고

And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:

15. 그들의 굶주림으로 인하여 하늘에서 빵을 주시며 그들의 목마름으로 인하여 반석에서 물을 내시고 또 주께서 전에 그들에게 주시겠다고 맹세하신 땅에 그들이 들어가 그것을 소유할 것을 그들에게 약속하셨나이다.

And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them. 

16. 그러나 그들과 우리 조상들이 교만히 행하며 목을 굳게 하여 주의 명령에 귀를 기울이지 아니하고

But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments,

17. 순종하기를 거부하며 주께서 자기들 가운데서 행하신 이적들을 깊이 생각하지 아니하고 목을 굳게 하며 반역하여 대장 하나를 임명하고 자기들을 속박한 곳으로 돌아가고자 하였사오나 오직 주는 항상 용서하는 [하나님]이시요, 은혜로우시며 긍휼이 많으시며 분노하기를 더디 하시며 큰 친절을 베푸시는 분이시므로 그들을 버리지 아니하셨나이다.

And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou [art] a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not. 

18. 참으로 그들이 자기들을 위해 부어 만든 송아지를 만들고 이르기를, 이것은 곧 너를 이집트에서 데리고 올라온 네 [하나님]이니라, 하여 큰 격노를 일으켰사오나

Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This [is] thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;

19. 여전히 주께서는 많은 긍휼을 베푸사 그들을 광야에 버리지 아니하시며 낮에는 구름 기둥이 그들을 떠나지 아니하고 길에서 그들을 인도하게 하시며 밤에는 불기둥이 떠나지 아니하고 그들에게 빛을 보여 주고 그들이 갈 길을 보여 주게 하셨사오며

Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.

20. 또 주의 선한 영을 주사 그들을 가르치시며 주의 만나가 그들의 입에서 떠나지 않게 하시고 그들의 목마름으로 인해 그들에게 물을 주사

Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

21. 참으로 사십 년 동안 광야에서 그들을 부양하시되 그들에게 부족함이 없게 하셨으므로 그들의 옷이 낡아지지 아니하고 발이 부르트지 아니하였사오며

Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, [so that] they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.

22. 또 왕국들과 민족들을 그들에게 주시되 그것들을 여러 지역으로 나누어 주시매 이에 그들이 시혼의 땅 곧 헤스본 왕의 땅과 바산 왕 옥의 땅을 소유하였나이다.

Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

23. 또한 주께서 그들의 자손을 하늘의 별들 같이 많게 하시고 또 친히 전에 그들의 조상들에게 약속하사 그들이 들어가 소유하라고 하신 땅으로 그들을 데리고 들어가셨으므로

Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess [it].

24. 이처럼 그들의 자손이 들어가 그 땅을 소유하였으며 주께서 그 땅의 거주민 가나안 족속을 그들 앞에서 정복하시고 그들과 그들의 왕들과 그 땅의 백성을 그들의 손에 넘겨주사 그들이 원하는 대로 저들에게 행하게 하시매

So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would. 

25. 그들이 견고한 도시들과 기름진 땅을 취하고 모든 좋은 물건으로 가득한 집과 파서 만든 우물과 포도원과 올리브 밭과 많은 과일 나무를 소유하여 이로써 먹고 배가 불러 살이 찌고 주의 큰 선하심을 즐겼사오나

And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness. 

26. 그럼에도 불구하고 그들이 순종하지 아니하고 주를 거역하며 주의 율법을 등 뒤에 두고 그들을 주께로 돌아오게 하려고 그들에게 증언한 주의 대언자들을 죽여 큰 격노를 일으켰나이다.

Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.

27. 그러므로 주께서 그들을 그들의 원수들의 손에 넘겨주사 그들이 그들을 괴롭게 하매 그들이 고난을 당하여 주께 부르짖을 때에 주께서 하늘에서부터 그들의 말을 들으시고 주의 많은 긍휼에 따라 구원자들을 그들에게 주사 그들이 그들의 원수들의 손에서 그들을 구원하였으나

Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest [them] from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.

28. 그들이 안식을 얻은 뒤에 다시 주 앞에서 악을 행하므로 주께서 그들을 그들의 원수들의 손에 버려두사 그들이 그들을 지배하게 하시다가 그들이 돌이켜 주께 부르짖으매 주께서 하늘에서부터 그들의 말을 들으시고 여러 번 주의 긍휼에 따라 그들을 건져 내시며

But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest [them] from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies; 

29. 그들을 다시 주의 율법으로 데려오려고 그들에게 증언하셨으나 그들이 교만히 행하여 (사람이 행하면 그 가운데서 살게 될) 주의 명령에 귀를 기울이지 아니하며 주의 법도를 범하여 죄를 짓고 어깨를 뒤로 빼며 목을 굳게 하고 들으려 하지 아니하였나이다.

And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, do, he shall live in them; and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear. 

30. 그러나 주께서 여러 해 동안 그들을 참으시고 또 주의 대언자들을 통해 주의 영으로 그들에게 증언하시되 그들이 들으려 하지 아니하므로 여러 땅의 백성들의 손에 그들을 넘겨주시되

Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands. 

31. 그럼에도 불구하고 주의 크신 긍휼로 인하여 주께서 그들을 진멸하지 아니하시며 버리지도 아니하셨사오니 주는 은혜로우시고 긍휼이 많으신 [하나님]이시니이다.

Nevertheless for thy great mercies sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou [art] a gracious and merciful God.

32. 그러므로 이제 우리 [하나님]이여, 위대하고 강하고 두려우며 언약을 지키고 긍휼을 베푸시는 [하나님]이여, 아시리아 왕들의 시대로부터 이 날까지 우리와 우리 왕들과 통치자들과 제사장들과 대언자들과 조상들과 주의 온 백성에게 임한 모든 고난을 주 앞에서 적은 것으로 여기지 마시옵소서.

Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. 

33. 그러나 우리에게 임한 모든 일에서 주는 의로우시니 주는 바르게 행하셨사오나 우리는 악을 행하였나이다.

Howbeit thou [art] just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:

34. 우리 왕들과 통치자들과 제사장들과 조상들이 주의 율법을 지키지 아니하며 주의 명령과 주께서 그들을 향해 증언할 때에 말씀하신 주의 증언에 귀를 기울이지 아니하였으니

Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.

35. 그들은 자기들의 왕국에서, 주께서 자기들에게 베푸신 큰 선하심 속에서 자기들 앞에 주신 넓고 기름진 땅에서 주를 섬기지 아니하며 자기들의 악한 행실에서 돌이키지 아니하였나이다.

For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.

36. 보소서, 우리가 이 날 종이 되었사오며, 보소서, 주께서 우리 조상들에게 주사 거기에서 나는 열매와 좋은 것을 먹게 하신 그 땅으로 인해 우리가 그 땅에서 종이 되었나이다.

Behold, we [are] servants this day, and [for] the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we [are] servants in it:

37. 그 땅이 우리의 죄들로 인하여 주께서 우리 위에 세우신 왕들에게 많은 소출을 내고 또한 그들이 우리의 몸과 가축을 마음대로 지배하므로 우리가 큰 고난 중에 있사옵나이다.

And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we [are] in great distress.

38. 우리가 이 모든 것으로 인하여 이제 확실한 언약을 세우고 그것을 기록하며 우리의 통치자들과 레위 사람들과 제사장들이 그 언약에 날인하나이다, 하였더라.

And because of all this we make a sure [covenant], and write [it]; and our princes, Levites, [and] priests, seal [unto it].
