엊그제 2월 4일이 입춘이었는데요, 이제 봄이 멀지 않았지요?

미국에도 입춘과 비슷한 날이 있는데요…

February 2 is the Groundhog Day, and it’s similar to ‘Yipchoon’ celebrated in the Asian countries.

(2월 2일은 Groundhog Day 이고, 아시아 나라들에서 기념하는 입춘과 비슷합니다.)

2월 2일은 ‘Groundhog Day’라고 해서 봄을 기다리는 미국 사람들의 마음을 담고 있는 날입니다.  입춘과 비슷한 시기에 겹치는 날입니다. ‘groundhog’은 어떤 동물이죠?

Groundhog is a short-legged little chubby looking animal.  And they are found in northern and eastern parts of the United States.

(짧은 다리에 통통하게 생긴 동물입니다.  미국 북부와 동부 지역에서 서식하는 동물입니다.)

I am glad you didn’t call me chubby.

(당신이 나를 ‘chubby’라고 하지 않아서 다행입니다.)

‘groundhog’은 미국 북부와 동부에 서식하는 ‘woodchuck’이라고도 하는 큰 땅 다람쥐 과의 동물인데요,  네 다리는 짧고 몸은 통통하게 생겼고, 윤기가 흐르는 갈색 털을 가진 동물입니다.  땅속에 굴을 파고 살고 겨울 잠을 자는 동물이죠.  

There is a legend about groundhogs.

If it’s cloudy on Groundhog Day, spring comes early, and if it’s sunny, spring comes in six weeks.

(‘groundhog’에 대한 속설이 있는데요, ‘Groundhog Day’에 날씨가 흐리면 봄이 일찍 오고, 날씨가 맑으면 봄이 6주 후에 찾아온다고 합니다.)

‘Groundhog Day’에 날씨가 맑으면, ‘groundhog’이 땅속에서 밖으로 나왔다가 자신의 그림자에 놀라 다시 들어가 6주일간 겨울잠을 자게 되며 그 이후에야 봄이 찾아오고, 구름이 끼면 봄이 빨리 찾아온다고 합니다.  믿거나 말거나 하는 민간 설화이지요.

미국의 농부들은 이날 ‘groundhog’이 나와서 어떻게 하는지에 따라 농사운수를 예측하고 내기를 걸기도 하면서 동네축제로 즐겼다고 합니다.  ‘Pennsylvania’ 주에서는 120년 이상 이와 관련된 공식 행사를 갖고 있습니다.  

Usually it’s broadcast on TV, or at least the final results are broadcast on TV to tell everybody when spring is coming.

(보통 텔레비전에 방송이 되거나, 최소한 그 결과를 텔레비전에서 방송하여 모든 사람들에게 언제 봄이 올 것인지 예고합니다.)

그런데 ‘groundhog’을 이용한 일기예보가 적중한 것은 전체의 39%에 불과하다고 합니다.

저희는 Washington, D.C. 를 돌아보고 있는데요, 지난 번에 Union Station하고 Capitol building 에 대한 이야기를 나눠봤습니다.  오늘은 어디로 가볼까요?

How about visiting museums in the National Mall area?

There are many wonderful museums there.

(몰 지역에 있는 박물관들을 가보는 것은 어떨까요?  그 곳에 아주 훌륭한 박물관들이 많이 있습니다.)

지난 번에 말씀 드렸던 야외 공원 지역인 ‘Mall’ 지역에는 세계적으로 유명한 Smithsonian 박물관들을 비롯한 여러 박물관들이 모여 있지요.  오늘은 그 중 몇 군데를 둘러 보겠습니다.

The National Air and Space Museum is the place where you can see the original Wright Brothers 1903 airplane.  Exhibitions include moon rocks and spacesuits worn by astronauts on the moon.

국립 항공 우주 박물관인데요, 이 곳에는 비행기를 발명한 Wright Brothers, 라이트 형제가 1903년 제작한 비행기가 전시 되어 있습니다.   달에 착륙했던 아폴로 우주선 사령선과 우주 비행사들이 입었던 우주복 등이 전시되어 있는 곳입니다.  국회 의사당 바로 건너편에 있고요, 미국의 소리 방송국에서도 아주 가까운 거리에 있습니다.  엎어지면 코 닿을 거리라고 하죠?

National Gallery of Art – has an incredible collection of European paintings, including self-portraits by Van Gogh and Rembrandt.  The National Gallery also has American artists’ paintings and portraits of American presidents.

미국 국립 미술관: Rembrandt, Van Gogh 초상화 등 유명한 유럽 화가들의 그림, 미국 대통령들의 초상화 등 미국 화가들의 작품을 감상할 수 있는 곳입니다.

The National Archives

미국 역사상 중요한 의미를 가지는 the Declaration of Independence 미국 독립선언서, the Constitution of the United States 미국 헌법의 원본을 볼 수 있는  곳이 있다고 하던데요.

It’s the National Archives.

‘Archive’라는 말은 과거의 기록물이나 문서와 같은 것들을 통칭해서 말하는 것인데요, 이런 것들을 보관하는 장소를 의미하기도 하지요.  

‘국립문서기록관리청’은 어떤 곳입니까?

It's America's record keeper.

NARA preserves documents and materials related to the United States.

미국의 기록을 보관하는 곳인데요, 미국 관련 문서와 기록물을 관리하고 보존합니다.

* 주로 ‘archives’와 같이 복수 형태로 사용됩니다.  요즈음 컴퓨터 용어로 ‘archives’는 자주 사용하지 않는 문서나 그 사본을 장기간 보관하는 저장공간을 말합니다.  ‘Archive’라는 단어는 ‘저장공간에 보관하다’는 의미의 동사로도 사용이 됩니다. (place or store in an archive)

The National Archives Building is located three blocks away from Capitol Hill (on Pennsylvania Avenue).  It’s within walking distance.

국회의사당 있는 곳에서 세 구간 떨어진 곳(펜실배니아 애브뉴)에 있습니다.  걸어서 갈 수 있는 거리이지요.

The National Archives stores historical documents that include the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights; and the Emancipation Proclamation.

‘National Archives’에는 미국 헌법, 독립선언서, (미국헌법의)권리선언, 1862년 Lincoln 대통령의 노예해방선언문 같은 역사적인 문서가 보관되어 있습니다.

Also found are photographs, motion picture film, disc, audiotape, and videotape recordings, and other memorabilia that is of historical value.

그리고 사진, 영화필름, 디스크, 음성과 영상 기록물, 그리고 역사적 가치가 있는 다른 기념물 등을 보관합니다.  그리고 최근에는 전자우편 문서도 보관한다고 합니다.

National Archives 에는 한국전쟁에 관한 기록과 수백만장의 사진이 보관 되어 있는데요, Maryland 주 College Park에 있는 National Archives에서 열람할 수 있습니다.

National Museum of American History – This is not a boring museum, but a fun place for kids.  There are pearls, gowns, and jewelry worn by first ladies, the original Star-Spangled Banner and many other exhibitions.

그 다음에는요, National Museum of American History, 미국 역사 박물관이라는 곳이 있지요.  따분한 곳이 아니라 재미있게 미국 역사를 즐길 수 있는 박물관입니다. 진품 성조기도, 미국 대통령 영부인들이 사용했던 의류, 보석, 장신구, 미국 대통령들과 관련된 유물들이 전시되어 있습니다.
