I walked out the back way–just as Gatsby had when he had made his nervous circuit of the house half an hour before–and ran for a huge black knotted tree whose massed leaves made a fabric against the rain.

Once more it was pouring and my irregular lawn, well-shaved by Gatsby’s gardener, abounded in small muddy swamps and prehistoric marshes. There was nothing to look at from under the tree except Gatsby’s enormous house, so I stared at it, like Kant at his church steeple, for half an hour. A brewer had built it early in the “period” craze, a decade before, and there was a story that he’d agreed to pay five years’ taxes on all the neighboring cottages if the owners would have their roofs thatched with straw. Perhaps their refusal took the heart out of his plan to Found a Family–he went into an immediate decline. His children sold his house with the black wreath still on the door. Americans, while occasionally willing to be serfs, have always been obstinate about being peasantry.

- steeple : 첨탑. * 임마누엘 칸트(Immanuel Kant, 1724~1804)는 저녁 6시에 소박한 탁자에 앉아 해질녘까지 책을 읽다가 여름이나 겨울이나 난롯가에 자리를 잡고 창 너머로 교회의 첨탑을 바라보면서 철학적 사색에 잠겼다고 한다. 닉은 대학물을 먹은 티를 내는 동시에 조금 전까지 팽팽하게 지속되던 긴장을 다소 유머러스하게 풀어 주고 있다. 또한 이 작품에서 닉은 자신이 직접 행동에 나서는 경우는 드물지만 주변의 상황을 끝까지 주목하고 관찰하고 사색하며 기술한다는 점에서 칸트의 비유는 일면 그럴 듯하다. 개츠비의 저택을 보면서 그 집을 지은 전 세대 사람이 일종의 ‘가문’을 창립하려고 했다가 실패한 이야기를 한다. 개츠비가 하고 있는 일도 역시 그와 마찬가지로 ‘개츠비 가문’을 일으키려고 하는 것이 아닐까 하는 생각을 한다. 개츠비도 그 집의 전 주인과 마찬가지로 실패하게 되어 있는데 그 원인은 미국인들의 특성 때문이다. 미국인들은 항상 소작농으로 있기를 고집한다. 때로는 농노가 되기를 간절히 바랄 때도 있지만 그것은 현실화되지 않는다. 전 주인은 계약을 맺고 자기는 영주가 되고 그 이웃들은 농노가 되게 하려고 했지만 실패했다. 전 주인이 실패한 것은 그 이웃의 주민들이 소작농으로 남아 있기를 바라는 미국인의 특성 때문이다. 개츠비는 파티를 열고 그 파티에 참석하는 사람들이 농노처럼 되기를 바라지만 실패하게 되어 있다.

이것은 또한 닉 자신의 이야기이기도 하다. 개츠비는 닉에게 connection을 맺으려고 했지만 닉이 거부함으로써 닉이 농노가 되는 일은 일어나지 않았다. 닉은 자신이 농노는 아니지만 소작농에 불과하다고 생각하고 있다. 개츠비의 지시로 옛 애인과의 만남을 주선하는 자신을 개츠비의 소작농이라고 생각하고 있는 것으로 보인다.

After half an hour the sun shone again and the grocer’s automobile rounded Gatsby’s drive with the raw material for his servants’ dinner–I felt sure he wouldn’t eat a spoonful. A maid began opening the upper windows of his house, appeared momentarily in each, and, leaning from a large central bay, spat meditatively into the garden. It was time I went back. While the rain continued it had seemed like the murmur of their voices, rising and swelling a little, now and then, with gusts of emotion. But in the new silence I felt that silence had fallen within the house too.

- It was time I went back : 개츠비 집의 하인들(servants)과 하녀(maid)가 등장하고 이어서 닉이 자기 차례라고 한다. 하녀는 meditatively하게 행동하고 있고, 닉은 meditation을 하고 있다. 닉이 자신을 하인들과 하녀와 같이 여기고 있다는 암시. 엄청나게 부자인 개츠비나 톰을 만나면서 일개 회사원에 불과한 닉은 자기 스스로를 자기도 모르는 사이에 개츠비나 톰의 하인으로 여기고 있다는 암시. 자기 의지와는 상관없이 돈이 계급과 서열을 자동적으로 정리해주고 있다고 할 수 있다.

I went in—after making every possible noise in the kitchen short of pushing over the stove–but I don’t believe they heard a sound. They were sitting at either end of the couch looking at each other as if some question had been asked or was in the air, and every vestige of embarrassment was gone. Daisy’s face was smeared with tears and when I came in she jumped up and began wiping at it with her handkerchief before a mirror. But there was a change in Gatsby that was simply confounding. He literally glowed; without a word or a gesture of exultation a new well-being radiated from him and filled the little room.

“Oh, hello, old sport,” he said, as if he hadn’t seen me for years. I thought for a moment he was going to shake hands.

“It’s stopped raining.”

“Has it?” When he realized what I was talking about, that there were twinkle-bells of sunshine in the room, he smiled like a weather man, like an ecstatic patron of recurrent light, and repeated the news to Daisy. “What do you think of that? It’s stopped raining.”

“I’m glad, Jay.” Her throat, full of aching, grieving beauty, told only of her unexpected joy.

데이지가 개츠비와의 대화 후에 처음으로 내는 목소리. 데이지는 울었던 것으로 보이는데, 그녀의 목(throat = neck)이 고통스럽고 비통스러워 보이면서도 아름다웠다는 뜻으로 볼 수 있다. throat는 목소리가 나오는 목구멍을 뜻하기도 하고 목(neck)을 뜻하기도 한다. 그러한 데이지의 목에서 데이지에게서 나오는 목소리는 예상치 못한 기쁨(unexpected joy)만을 표현해주고 있었다는 것이다.

“I want you and Daisy to come over to my house,” he said, “I’d like to show her around.”

“You’re sure you want me to come?”

“Absolutely, old sport.”

absolutely : 데이지가 자주 사용하던 표현인데, 개츠비는 데이지와 만나서 대화하면서 데이지의 말투를 자기도 모르게 흉내 내고 있는 것으로 보인다.

Daisy went upstairs to wash her face–too late I thought with humiliation of my towels–while Gatsby and I waited on the lawn.

“My house looks well, doesn’t it?” he demanded.

“See how the whole front of it catches the light.”

I agreed that it was splendid.

“Yes.” His eyes went over it, every arched door and square tower. “It took me just three years to earn the money that bought it.”

“I thought you inherited your money.”

“I did, old sport,” he said automatically, “but I lost most of it in the big panic–the panic of the war.”

automatically : 개츠비가 자기의 거짓 경력을 암기해서 말하는 것으로 묘사되고 있다.

The automatic quality of Gatsby’s answer set us all back at least another minute.(105:15-16)

I think he hardly knew what he was saying, for when I asked him what business he was in he answered “That’s my affair,” before he realized that it wasn’t the appropriate reply.

“Oh, I’ve been in several things,” he corrected himself. “I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I’m not in either one now.” He looked at me with more attention. “Do you mean you’ve been thinking over what I proposed the other night?”

닉이 개츠비에게 무슨 일을 했었느냐고 묻자 개츠비는 ‘그것은 내 일이다(그것은 네가 알 바가 아니다)’라고 대답한다. 이 대답이 적절치 않다는 것을 이 말을 한 다음에 깨닫고 여러 가지 일을 했었다고 태도를 바꾸어서 말한다. 개츠비는 닉이 자기가 제안했던 모종의 비합법적인 일에 관심을 가지고 있는 것으로 넘겨 짚고 자기가 했던 일이 drug business, oil business라고 대답한다. drug business는 제약 산업(Pharmaceutical Industry)과 관련된 합법적인 사업을 가리킬 수도 있고 마약 거래나 마약 밀매와 관련된 불법적인 사업을 의미할 수도 있다. oil business는 밀주 판매업을 암시할 수도 있다. 닉이 자기의 제안에 관심이 있어서 이런 말들에 반응을 보이면 더 적극적으로 노골적으로 대화를 이어가기 위해 넌지시 닉이 알아들을 수 있는 용어들을 사용해서 말하고 있다. 닉은 개츠비의 제안에 전혀 관심이 없는데 개츠비가 혼자서 그렇게 판단하고 말하고 있다. 닉과 대조되는 개츠비의 속물 근성을 읽을 수 있다. 개츠비의 도서관에서 책 한 권을 빼내면 모두가 무너질 듯하다가 한 묘사는 개츠비의 이런 면을 암시한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 개츠비가 완벽해 보이지만 이렇게 작은 균열이 일어나면서 개츠비의 속물스러운 모습이 보이면서 완벽한 이미지가 깨져버리는 것이다.

Before I could answer, Daisy came out of the house and two rows of brass buttons on her dress gleamed in the sunlight.

“That huge place there?” she cried pointing.

“Do you like it?”

“I love it, but I don’t see how you live there all alone.”

“I keep it always full of interesting people, night and day. People who do interesting things. Celebrated people.”

Instead of taking the short cut along the Sound we went down the road and entered by the big postern.

With enchanting murmurs Daisy admired this aspect or that of the feudal silhouette against the sky, admired the gardens, the sparkling odor of jonquils and the frothy odor of hawthorn and plum blossoms and the pale gold odor of kiss-me-at-the-gate. It was strange to reach the marble steps and find no stir of bright dresses in and out the door, and hear no sound but bird voices in the trees.

And inside as we wandered through Marie Antoinette music rooms and Restoration salons I felt that there were guests concealed behind every couch and table, under orders to be breathlessly silent until we had passed through. As Gatsby closed the door of “the Merton College Library” I could have sworn I heard the owl-eyed man break into ghostly laughter.

We went upstairs, through period bedrooms swathed in rose and lavender silk and vivid with new flowers, through dressing rooms and poolrooms, and bathrooms with sunken baths–intruding into one chamber where a dishevelled man in pajamas was doing liver exercises on the floor. It was Mr. Klipspringer, the “boarder.” I had seen him wandering hungrily about the beach that morning. Finally we came to Gatsby’s own apartment, a bedroom and a bath and an Adam study, where we sat down and drank a glass of some Chartreuse he took from a cupboard in the wall.

영국과 스코틀랜드, 프랑스의 건축이나 인테리어 양식을 좋다는 것은 모두 모아놓은 듯한 인상을 준다. 내용을 잘 알고 했다기보다는 당시 사람들이 좋다고 하는 것들을 갖다놓은 것.
