I Ching(The Book of Changes), First Volume.
Hexagram 4 : Meng(Monutain over Water / Youthful Folly)
▣ Initial Six(Line 1) : To enlighten ignorance,
it is beneficial to discipline people strictly as if punishing a criminal.
However, one should use this to remove their shackles;
to persist in harsh punishment will lead to regret and distress.
[Explanation]
Initial Six] : When dispelling ignorance, it is advantageous to discipline strictly,
much like applying punishment to a transgressor.
However, if one continuously inflicts the hardship of frtters and shackles without
releasing them, it will result in danger and misfortune.
[Commentary]
Line 1(初六,초육 - Initial Six) is incorrect(不正,부정) and lacking balance(不中,부중).
Moreover, placed at the very bottom,
it represents an entity of extreme ignorance and indiscreet folly.
To enlighten such an ignorant and immature individual[發蒙,발몽 -bal-mong],
it is beneficial to apply strict punishment first[利用刑人,이용형인 - i-yong-hyeong-in],
as if striking their calves with a rod[扑,복 - bok].
However, as much as one tries to edify such a person, strong backlash will follow;
thus, one must blend firmness with flexbility[用說桎梏,용탈질곡 - yong-tal-jil- gok].
If one continuously relies solely on punishment, danger will follow[以往吝,이왕린 - i-wang-rin].
Dong-pa(Su Shi) asserts that punishment for the sake of punishment must be avoided:
"If one has broken free from ignorance and become enlightened,
there is no need to use strict discipline[發蒙,발몽].
Since shackles[桎梏,질곡] are meant to be used before punishment is actually administered,
once punishment has been applied, it is proper to release them.
Prolonging punishment only defiles the punishment itself.
The purpose of enlightening ignorance lies in not defiling human nature."
Dasan(Jeong Yak-yong) interprets "說(설,seol)" as "脫(탈, tal, to release /escape).
A flower blooming from a bud is a formm of release(脫,탈 -tal),
and an arrow departing from a bowstring is also called tal.
Furthermore, Jil(桎,질) refers to foot shackles(fetters), and Gok(梏,곡) refers to hand
shackles(handcuffs) ; thus, it means binding with fetters and handcuffs.
Dasan arguse that punishment purely for the sake of punishment through relentiess
severity[用說桎梏,용탈질곡] is the act of a terrible teacher.
He asserts that true education strengths and offering praise.
Cheng Yi(정자) states that in enlightening the common people[下民,하민],
penalties[刑禁,형금] are established to guide them.
He notes that the governance of sage kings throughout history involved setting
penalties to govern the people while edifying them to make customs beautiful.
Confucius's commentary states : 'punishing the ignorant must be done using
proper laws[利用刑人 以正法也, 이용형인 이정법야]."
This cautions that a strict master, when raising an outstanding disciple,
uses small punishments to prevent them from falling into great errors
[小懲而大誡,소징이대계 - so-jing-i-dae-gye], an educational mmethod re-emphasized
in Chapter 5 of the Appended Remarks(계사 하전).
One can see the passage explaining So-jing(small punishment) and Dae-gye(great warning)
in the context of Tang Taizong Li Shimin, who lost an eye to Yeon Gaesomun of Goguryeo.
The term "shackles[桎梏,질곡]" also appears in Toegye's Twelve Songs of Dosan
This corresponds to the case where Hexagram 4 (Meng / 山水蒙卦,산수몽괘) changes
into Hexagram 42(Sun / 山澤損卦,산택손괘).
