<When, Where, as What Shall We Meet again?>
Lee, Hyesun
On the way to Yuseong for a memorial service for poet Lee Seom,
It rained all the morning.
The water mist on the hilltop spreads its wings and ascends heavenward.
“Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?” (2)
Do we fly heavenward
Like the water mist over that hill?
Is our end to be scattered to earth, water, fire, wind?
Or, do we become the roots,
Leaves and branches of the green trees standing there, and
Finally come back to myself?
Likewise, do I die and come back to you?
Becoming the dense and verdant green trees over that hill,
Becoming the stream water in that resounding valley?
NOTES: (1) The title of Kim Gwang Seop’s poem “At evening.”
(2) The title of a painting by Paul Gaugin.
