사랑을 배우자

저를 포함한 중생들은 불쌍하고 무지하다는 것을 깊이 느낍니다. 이 세상은 타락했고 완전히 혼란스럽습니다. 수백억에 달하는 생명체들은 머리 없는 닭처럼 쉴 새 없이 허송세월하고 있습니다. 우리 모두가 지구상에 갇혀 있지만 전반적으로 무난한 삶을 살고 있다는 것은 놀라운 일입니다.

교통경찰이 없는 도로에 수십억대의 차량이 다니는 것이 어떨지 상상할 수 있나요? 시기적절하게 도와주는 수많은 보이지 않는 신들이 없었더라면 우리 사회는 오래 전에 붕괴됐을 것이라고 저는 믿습니다. 다투고 분노하고 무지하고 오만한 70억의 인간들이 평화롭게 공존하는 것을 상상할 수 있나요? 모든 부처님과 보살, 신, 알라, 그리고 수많은 신들에게 감사해합시다.

모든 다른 이들을 사랑하고 우리 서로 사랑합시다. 남을 사랑하면 얻을 수 있는 것이 있을 뿐 잃을 것은 없습니다. 단순히 자기 자신만을 사랑할 때는 그 반대입니다. 왜 다른 사람들을 사랑하지 않나요? 우리는 사랑에 대해 배울 것이 많습니다.

우리는 사랑 이외에는 아무것도 배울 필요가 없습니다. 하지만 실제로 사람들은 사랑을 제외한 모든 것을 가르치고 배웁니다. 사랑은 평범한 존재로는 이해할 수 없는 진실이기 때문에 이러한 상황을 이해할 수 있습니다. 오직 진실의 영역에서 오는 존재만이 사랑을 가르칠 수 있습니다.

사람들은 사랑하는 법을 알고 태어난 듯이 당연하게 여깁니다. 하지만 사실은 그 반대입니다. 사람들이 가장 못하는 것이 사랑입니다.

누군가 우리를 탓하더라도 그건 중요하지 않습니다.

누군가 오해를 하더라도 그건 중요하지 않습니다.

누군가 비난을 하더라도 그건 중요하지 않습니다.

누군가 우리를 해치더라도 그건 중요하지 않습니다.

사랑이 있을 때 정말 중요한 것은 없습니다. 남을 탓하고 오해하고 비방하고 다치게 하는 것은 인간의 본성입니다. 우리 모두 그렇습니다. 개미집을 밟거나 벌집을 건드리는 사람은 쏘이기 마련입니다. 인류의 일부로 태어난 우리는 다른 사람을 다치게 하거나 상처를 입는 것을 피할 수 없습니다.

우리는 그들이 무엇을 하고 있는지 몰랐기 때문에 잘못을 저지른 사람들을 용서하는 법을 배워야 합니다. 마찬가지로 우리는 우리의 잘못을 용서해줄 사람들이 필요합니다.

원한을 품어서는 안 됩니다. 원한은 독이 있는 말벌과 같습니다. 원한을 잊고 말벌을 놓아주세요. 다른 사람을 사랑하면 나비가 당신 주위에서 춤을 주고 꽃은 기쁨으로 피어나게 됩니다.

사랑이 없는 선행을 자랑하지 마세요. 그러한 행위는 쉽게 다른 사람들에게 상처를 입히는 칼이 될 수 있습니다. 사랑은 순수한 선이지만, 인간은 거리낌 없는 사랑을 하지 않은 한 아무런 선함도 가지고 있지 않습니다. 그래서 우리는 먼저 사랑을 배워야 합니다. 사랑이 있을 때 선함이 있습니다. 사랑이 없다면 우리는 어디에서 선행을 찾을 수 있을까요? 그러나 우리는 위선적이고 선행을 자랑하는 사람들을 용서해야 합니다. 있는 그대로의 그들을 사랑하세요. 사랑은 무조건적이고 차별하지 않습니다. 그렇지 않으면 사랑이 아닙니다.

사랑은 어디에 있든, 누구에게도, 어떤 상황에서든 실패하지 않습니다. 사랑은 보편적인 진리입니다. 우리를 살아있게 하는 것은 음식이 아니라 사랑입니다. 만약 음식만 있고 사랑이 없다면 우리는 반드시 그리고 비참하게 죽을 것입니다. 그러나 사랑이 있다면 우리는 굶어 죽더라도 영원한 생명을 보장받을 것입니다.

저는 이 세상의 어느 누구도 적으로 만들거나 불쾌하게 하고 싶지 않습니다. 그러나 안타깝게도, 여전히 많은 사람들이 저에게 화가 났고 상처받았고 불쾌해 했습니다. 정말 죄송합니다. 저는 아직 사랑하는 법을 터득하지 못했습니다. 그렇기 때문에 저는 더 많은 배움과 수행을 위해 극락으로 돌아가야만 합니다. 아니면 영원히 후회할 것입니다.

저는 아무리 어리석더라도 사랑하는 법을 배우려고 노력해야 합니다.

사랑은 마음을 따뜻하게 합니다. 우리는 다른 사람들을 따뜻하게 하기 전에 먼저 스스로를 따뜻하게 해야 합니다.

사랑은 마음속의 광명입니다. 그것은 우리 마음의 가장 깊은 곳을 밝히고 그 다음에 바깥 세상을 밝게 비춥니다.

사랑은 결코 손해를 보지 않습니다. 그것은 비용 없이 커다란 이익을 가져다줍니다. 사랑이 있다면 손해의 고통은 전화위복이 됩니다. 사랑이 없다면 손해는 단지 손해일 뿐입니다.

사랑은 복의 곱하기입니다. 큰 사랑을 한다면 우리는 적은 비용으로 후하게 보상을 받을 것이고 작은 사랑을 한다면 큰 비용을 치루더라도 작은 보상을 기대하게 될 것입니다.

Let’s Learn to Love

I feel deeply that sentient beings, myself included, are pitiful and ignorant. This is a defiled and utterly chaotic world. Living beings, in tens of billions, are bustling around like headless chickens, constantly on the go for nothing. They are all cooped up on this globe but, amazingly, are leading a passable life in general.

We cannot envisage what it would be like to have billions of vehicles on the roads without traffic police. I believe that, had it not been for the countless invisible divinities who lend us pathetic human beings their timely helping hands, our society would have long since collapsed. Can we imagine that seven billion humans, who are quarrelsome, wrathful, ignorant and arrogant, coexisting by themselves in peace? Let's be grateful to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, God, Allah, and the countless deities.

Let us love all others and love each other.

We have nothing to lose but everything to gain when we love others. The opposite is true when we simply love ourselves. Why don't we love other people?

There is much to learn about love.

We don't need to learn anything except love. Yet in reality, people teach and learn everything but love.

This is understandable because love is the Truth which is beyond comprehension by ordinary beings. Only beings coming from the Truth realm are capable of teaching love.

People take it for granted that they are born knowing how to love. Nothing can be further from the truth. What people are least capable of is loving.

If we are blamed, it doesn't matter.

If we are misunderstood, it doesn't matter.

If we are slandered, it doesn't matter.

If we are hurt, it doesn't matter.

Nothing really matters when there is love. It is human nature to blame, misunderstand, slander and hurt others. We all do that. One who treads on an anthill or pokes a wasp's nest is bound to get stung. Born as part of humanity, we cannot avoid hurting others or getting hurt.

We should learn to forgive those who have wronged us as they didn't know what they were doing. Likewise, we need others to forgive us.

We should not bear grudges. A grudge is like a poisonous wasp that stings. Forget about the enmity and let go of the wasp. Love others and the butterflies will dance around you and flowers bloom in joy.

Do not boast about good deeds which are not necessarily love. They can easily be the knife that inflicts injuries on others. Love is pure virtue but humans do not possess any virtue at all unless they act with unreserved love. So we must first learn to love. When there is love, there is goodness. Where can we find virtue without love?

We should forgive people who are hypocrites and vaunt their good deeds. Love them for what they are. Love is unconditional and non-discriminatory, otherwise it is not love at all.

Love never fails: wherever it is, whomever it is given to and under whatever circumstances. Love is a universal truth.

It is love, not food, that keeps us alive. If we only have food but not love, we will surely die and die a dog's death. However, with love we will be assured of eternal life even if we are starved to death.

I do not wish to make an enemy of a single soul and offend anyone in this world. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of people whom I have upset, hurt and offended. I am really sorry. I have not yet mastered the knack of loving, so I must return to the Pure Land for more tuition and practice. Or I will regret it forever.

I must try to master the art of love, no matter how stupid I am.

Love warms the cockles of our hearts. We should warm ourselves first before warming others.

Love is the radiance in our hearts. It starts to light up the deepest part of our hearts and then illuminates the world outside.

Love never causes loss. It brings huge benefits with no cost. With love, suffering loss is a blessing in disguise. Without it, a loss is a loss.

Love is a multiplier of fortune: with great compassion we will be rewarded generously for a modest outlay, while with scanty love we can expect only a minor return even for a major investment.
