■ Title: Understanding Enlightenment and the Practical Experience of Faith through the Harmony of Light and the Divine - Wonbanggak Sutra (Seonin Balgwiri) - Part 2
This article draws from the "Wonbanggak Sutra," attributed to Seonin Balgwiri during Korea's ancient Shinsi Era (Shinsi Sidae). The foundational core of mastering "technique, philosophy, and healing" through the training of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo ultimately leads to one thing: understanding the light, vibration, and love of nature—precisely what the Wonbanggak Sutra emphasizes.
While I’ve often taught that this principle—"One Unified Truth that governs all things"—has existed throughout human history, I had long lacked a textual source that clearly reflected it. Then one day, I came across this text online: a hymn from the ancient Shinsi Era, used in ritual ceremonies even before the rise of formal religions. Regardless of its historical authenticity, its content resonated deeply with me. That’s why I chose to quote and expand on the Wonbanggak Sutra in my writings.
■ Understanding Enlightenment and the Practical Experience of Faith through the Harmony of Light and the Divine
— Based on the teachings of the Wonbanggak Sutra (Seonin Balgwiri)
Natural light, vibration, energy, and love can all be understood under one principle. This integrative view transcends religion and philosophy, pointing directly to the essential nature of the universe itself.
While writing my five-part series titled The Right Path of Practice, I searched for texts or oral traditions that addressed such core themes. That led me to the Wonbanggak Sutra—a hymn reportedly sung during ancient heavenly rituals, and considered by some to be among the oldest scriptures known to humanity.
Though written before organized religion took form, the Sutra’s message is remarkably timeless. Accompanied by Classical Chinese text and annotations, it was relatively accessible. I elaborated on its meaning by adding modern examples to aid contemporary readers. Its central message is clear:
The laws and truths of nature are the unchanging foundations that move all things.
As someone who teaches martial technique, philosophy, and healing, I frequently reference religion—not as dogma, but as a means to express natural law, light, and love. The Wonbanggak Sutra reaffirmed that even in pre-religious times, these truths were already being expressed.
This chapter goes beyond theoretical awakening. It aims to help readers understand the role of light within the harmony of nature and divinity, and how this affects real life. Unlike many ancient texts that are overly symbolic or abstract, this one—despite its uncertain origin—delivers its essential message in a clear and simple way. That’s why I incorporated it into The Right Path of Practice.
■ Core Principles of the Wonbanggak Sutra
1. The Connection Between Light and the Divine Light is more than a physical phenomenon—it symbolizes divinity itself. According to the Sutra, the harmony of God is expressed through light. This light governs all life and the cosmos, and it is through this light that we experience divinity and gain insight.
> > In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, this light is referred to as the love of nature. The martial journey begins with repeated experiences of Energy Flow.
2. The Practical Nature of Enlightenment and Faith Enlightenment is not mere theory—it must be experienced physically and emotionally. The divine light acts as a healing energy. The deeper your faith, the stronger its impact. Enlightenment becomes a channel for transcending pain and hardship.
> > In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, concepts like faith, love, and realization are clearly defined and made practically applicable to both training and daily life.
3. The Principle of Trinity and Cosmic Order The Sutra emphasizes the Samil Principle—Heaven, Earth, and Humanity in unity. These are not separate forces, but a triune structure of interconnection. This mirrors both Eastern yin-yang theory and Western trinitarian thought.
> > Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu teaches the principle of natural motion from the very beginning. It is through this that the Three become One.
4. Natural Law and Divine Energy Change is not random—it flows from divine intent and natural law. The Sutra stresses that living in harmony with nature’s rhythms helps us realize life’s true purpose.
> > In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, such change is viewed as karmic fortune. Recognizing energy flow and cultivating awareness brings harmony, health, and happiness.
5. The Experience of Light through Practice Through meditation, prayer, and physical movement, we can encounter divine light and apply it to life. These experiences lead to healing and empowerment.
> > In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, when practitioners realize natural motion, they understand that meditation, prayer, and all human actions move under one principle. Following that principle is to awaken to the essence of spiritual practice.
Rooted in The Right Path of Practice, this interpretation brings the deep spiritual and philosophical insights of the Wonbanggak Sutra into modern context. Especially with the concept of the Light Pillar (+E), healing energy, and practical spiritual guidance, the approach is both intuitive and experiential.
In this way, Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu emphasizes that martial arts must integrate technique, philosophy, and healing. Only then can it reflect human life as part of the greater cosmos—revealing that all things are interconnected through one unified law.
That is the goal of life and practice itself—a lifetime light, a faithful companion, a guiding flame of wisdom and realization.
Understanding how to apply the light and harmony in personal experience begins with foundational practice in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
These ideas were the inspiration for the publication of "Searching For The Forgotten Half in Martial Arts", which offers this message for the first time in the 21st century.
○ The foundation follows three steps:
Relax, and Feel the Energy
Focus, and See it
Realize, and Do it
Through Energy Flow, practitioners repeatedly experience and embody Feel & Connect, Harmony & Balance. This leads to Body-Acquirement or Body-Magnetization, culminating in the formation of Kimu-Che—the lifelong light and guide for wisdom, insight, and correct living.
To recognize the energy of light, to feel its vibration, and to awaken through the love of nature—this is to live a life of clarity and action. Everyone manifests this to the degree they realize and apply it.
Thus, modern practitioners are encouraged to personally experience and embody the principles of the Sutra. Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu offers a simple, grounded path to that realization.
Anyone—not only martial artists—can begin by experiencing the Energy Flow.
This approach bridges philosophy with practical experience, empowering each individual to discover and embody their own path.
Healing Sessions are a core part of my international seminars. Open to all, not just Haedong Kumdo practitioners, these sessions allow participants to explore Energy Flow through methods like acupuncture and guided exercises.
■ Connecting the Sutra’s Philosophy with Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu The philosophy of the Wonbanggak Sutra is fully reflected in the core of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu. Because both arise from the same fundamental law.
Martial arts is not merely movement—it is a human path that integrates technique, philosophy, and healing.
This path becomes a journey toward healing, insight, and awakening.
My book Searching For The Forgotten Half in Martial Arts was written to convey this understanding.
■ Final Thoughts True martial arts must connect with the essence of human life—and that life must be in harmony with the universe.
Light is not just a concept. It is experience. And that experience becomes reality through practice.
That is the right path of practice. The faithful companion. The flame of wisdom.
May this understanding light your way.

■ Song of Seonin Balgwiri (선인 발귀리의 노래) ■
大一其極是名良氣
無有而混虛組而妙
The Great One, the ultimate state, is called Pure Energy (Yanggi).
Being and Non-being are blended, and the empty and the full interweave in profound harmony.
三一其體一三其用
混妙一環體用無枝
The Three-in-One forms the essence; the One-in-Three is its function.
All is mixed in mystery, forming one continuous loop—no separation between essence and action.
大虛有光是神之像
大氣長存是神之化
In the vast void, there is light—this is the image of the Divine.
The great energy that abides eternally is the expression of the Divine’s work.
眞名所源萬法是生
日月之子天神之衷
From the true source, all universal laws are born.
We, the children of the sun and moon, hold the sacred heart of Heaven within.
以照以線圓覺而能
Through light and path, we are illuminated and led to complete awakening.
