먼 타향에 나그네로 다니다 햇수는 쌓여 가고 고향에 돌아가지 못하니

  Wandering as a stranger in a distant land,

   the years accumulate and one cannot return to one′s hometown;

황량한 언덕에서 죽어 간다 해도 누구 한 사람이 돌아보기나 하겠는가?

  even if one dies upon a desolate hill,

  would there be a single person who would turn to look back?

遠方爲客하여 積年未歸하고 (원방위객하여 적년미귀하고)

  Traveling as a stranger in a distant land, years accumulate without returning home,

死于荒丘하여 無人見者니라. (사우황구하여 무인견자니라.)

  And dying upon a desolate hill, there is no one to witness it.

 [Explanation, 풀이]

부모에게 불효하여 부모를 떠났으니 죽을 때 부모가 돌보아 주겠으며,

  Having been unfilial and deserted one′s parents,

   would those parents care for them at death?

형제와 정을 끊어 형제를 떠났으니 죽을 때 형제가 돌보겠으며,

  Having severed affection and abandoned siblings,

  would those siblings care for them at death?

부모와 형제를 버린 사람이 친척인들 있겠으며 친구인들 있겠는가?

  Would someone who abandoned both parents and siblings have relatives

  or friends remaining?

태어날 때는 그래도 부모형제 친척과 이웃이 훌륭한 사람이 되어주길 기대하여 기뻐해 주었지만

  Though parents, siblings, relatives, and neighbors rejoiced at birth in anticipation

   of one growing into a fine person,
임종에는 아무도 돌봐 주지 않으니 죽은 후의 저승에서인들  받아 주는 이 있겠는가?

  no one attends to them on their deathbed―so could there be anyone

  in the afterlife to welcome them?

기다리는 것은 지옥의 악귀들 뿐이리라.

  Nothing awaits them except the evil demons of hell.
