Russia has become the first country to formally recognize Afganistan's govenment since the Taliban seized power in 2021.
The Russia foreign ministry says it's receved credentials from Afganistan's newly appointed embassador.
Russia's ministry says the official recogniton of the Afgan government will foster productive bilateral cooperation.
Afganistan calls the move a historical step in that it's a good example for other countries.
The Taliban took control of Afganistan in August 2021 following the withdrawl of U.S. and NATO forces.
Since then, the Taliban with its strict interpretation of Islamic law has sought international recognition.
