2006-07 Power Rankings: Week 5
| RANK (LAST WK) | TEAM | REC. | COMMENT | |
![]() |
1 (2) | Mavericks | 12-4 | Bold prediction: Mavs won't be going 78-4. Simply matching the club's longest-ever winning streak (14) is two road wins away. But they're an undisputed No. 1, right? |
![]() |
2 (1) | Jazz | 14-4 | You can live with a 1-3 blip after a 12-1 start. Sloan's real issue is giving up two 50-point games in one month, which no NBA team had done since December 1990. |
![]() |
3 (8) | Magic | 13-5 | Best in the East? A tidy 6-2 against the West? On a 59-win pace? Twenty-nine wins in their last 40 games counting last season's 16-6 finish? It's early, yes, but it's all true. |
![]() |
4 (3) | Spurs | 12-5 | Not that they really need to look for silver linings, but Spurs are still unbeaten on the road with Manu in the lineup. So they're fine . . . as long as he's back soon. |
![]() |
5 (4) | Suns | 9-6 | After Amare rumbles for at least 20-and-10 in four straight games, I think even the skeptics would agree: You'd welcome an 80-percent Amare on your team. |
![]() |
![]() |
7 (6) | Pistons | 11-6 | Losing their streak in Charlotte wasn't the best. But Pistons' 11-1 record in six back-to-back sets is quite good, with 16 back-to-backs to go for a league-high 22 overall. |
![]() |
8 (5) | Rockets | 11-5 | Rough week for T-Mac, who took painful shots to the hip and the head, but a healthy month for Rockets, who enjoyed their first 10-win November since 1996-97. |
![]() |
9 (9) | Nuggets | 10-5 | Nuggets can't get too broken up about a home loss to Grizz when 'Melo's an All-Star lock already, J.R. might be Steal of the Summer and they're even outscoring Phoenix. |
![]() |
10 (16) | Pacers | 9-9 | Disappointing as it was to lose a roadie at the buzzer to struggling Seattle, Pacers still have East's No. 4 record . . . when they've played only six home games. |
![]() |
11 (18) | Bulls | 7-9 | Bulls have endured the hardest schedule in the league so far, as well as a national headband debate, but none of that really has set them back. What a conference. |
![]() |
12 (12) | Warriors | 9-8 | Wins over Jazz and Spurs were special, but Warriors just played 11 of 12 at home and went 7-5. So they're behind last season's 12-6 pace, with several roadies forthcoming. |
![]() |
13 (13) | Clippers | 8-8 | East aside, this is November's most disappointing team. Routing Orlando doesn't change the fact that Clips are 0-6 on the road and have sunk to last in the Pacific. |
![]() |
14 (10) | Cavaliers | 10-7 | I know they miss Hughes. I know nights like Saturday in Houston happen to everyone. But a 6-7 record in the East? With losses to Bobcats, Hawks and Knicks? |
![]() |
15 (14) | Kings | 8-7 | Artest (uh-oh) says he wants more shots. Bibby is gamely playing hurt but shooting 35.1 percent, 26.8 on 3s. Maybe, just maybe, Kings should look for K-Mart first. |
![]() |
16 (17) | Heat | 7-9 | For all the talk about how little help D-Wade's getting with Shaq out, Heat really can't ask for more from Haslem, who's averaging a healthy 13.4 ppg and 9.7 rpg. |
![]() |
17 (11) | Hornets | 8-8 | Losing West and Peja would be a killer at any time. But losing both frontcourt starters early is especially rough, with 17 of Hornets' first 30 games on the road. |
![]() |
18 (15) | Timberwolves | 7-9 | Not a good week overall, but an encouraging ending with Wolves' road win in Philly and my man Mike James, after a rough Nov., starting the new month strong. |
![]() |
19 (21) | Nets | 7-9 | Figures. After my recent ode to J-Kidd in the Weekend Dime, he fails to score in double figures six times in seven games, five of them losses. |
![]() |
20 (23) | Hawks | 7-8 | Woodson probably hasn't received enough credit for Hawks hovering around .500. But they'd be an even bigger story if they hadn't lost five games by five points or less. |
![]() |
21 (25) | Raptors | 7-10 | Raps already have been West twice and play almost half their road schedule before Jan. 1. So maybe there is one Atlantic team that can live with its start. |
![]() |
22 (29) | Bucks | 6-10 | Toughest week so far begins with news that Simmons might be out for the season. The response? Bucks stun Lakers and Warriors on the road and scare Suns, too. |
![]() |
23 (24) | Wizards | 6-10 | Arenas has been held to 10 points or less three times . . . and Wiz are still the East's (and the league's) worst road team at 0-8. It's bizarre, not quirky. |
![]() |
24 (26) | Grizzlies | 4-12 | Memories from any of those first-round sweeps are almost pleasant compared to looking at box scores without Pau and all the uncertainty surrounding the team's sale. |
![]() |
25 (28) | Bobcats | 5-12 | Surely you expected Bobs to beat Pistons and favor them to topple Spurs again Wednesday. They're 4-1 against CLE, SA, NJ and DET, 1-11 against all others. |
![]() |
26 (20) | SuperSonics | 7-11 | Just a hunch, but I'm struggling to picture the volatile Bob Hill -- seemingly railing about something new every day -- with Sonics next season. Wherever they are. |
![]() |
27 (19) | Trail Blazers | 6-12 | Ouch. Sunday's loss to Hawks completed an 0-4 homestand for back-to-Earth, Roy-less Blazers, who are 2-10 since their 4-2 start and play their next six on the road. |
![]() |
28 (30) | Knicks | 6-13 | Only in Gotham could this news be bad news, but Knicks -- who even Isiah admits play with 'fear' at MSG -- have only one roadie in the next 10 games. |
![]() |
29 (27) | Celtics | 5-10 | On Wednesday AM, Celts led the Atlantic. By Friday PM, they had lost to Nets and Raps by a combined seven points. Now they have nine more road games this month. |
![]() |
30 (22) | 76ers | 5-11 | Anyone remember that 3-0 start, which included a win at Orlando? If it feels like forever ago, that's because Sixers have only two wins in the 27 days since. |
<Yahoo! Sports by Steve Kerr>
1. Dallas Mavericks (12-4, Last ranking: 3) – How dominant have the top-ranked Mavericks been? They haven't trailed once in their last four games.
2. Los Angeles Lakers (11-5, Last ranking: 6) –
3. Utah Jazz (14-4, Last ranking: 1) – The Jazz stumbled and lost a couple of games last week, but Mehmet Okur saved a third loss with a late three-pointer against Seattle.
4. San Antonio Spurs (12-5, Last ranking: 2) – The Spurs are 2-2 since Manu Ginobili went down with a back injury. He's due back soon.
5. Orlando Magic (13-5, Last ranking: 4) – Give it up for the Hills. Grant Hill's game-winning layup against Portland came on a play that was drawn up perfectly by coach Brian Hill.
6. Denver Nuggets (10-5, Last ranking: 7) – Eduardo Najera has filled in nicely for Kenyon Martin, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The Nuggets seem to have put the chemistry issues of a year ago behind them.
7. Phoenix Suns (9-6, Last ranking: 10) – Amare Stoudemire has four straight games of at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, and he's throwing down some wicked dunks again. He's gaining confidence with each game.
8. Houston Rockets (11-5, Last ranking: 5) – The Rockets are winning even with Tracy McGrady struggling through a slow start. They're doing it the Van Gundy Way – with great defense. Opponents are shooting a league-low 42 percent.
9. Detroit Pistons (11-6, Last ranking: 9) – The Pistons are playing small, spreading the floor and firing threes (they've made 118 of them).
10. Cleveland Cavaliers (10-7, Last ranking: 8) – The Cavaliers miss Larry Hughes, who is out again with an ankle injury. Can he ever stay healthy?
11. Golden State Warriors (9-8, Last ranking: 11) – Troy Murphy's 23 and 11 were a bright spot in the Warriors' loss to the Bucks. He's trying to find his groove after a slow start.
12. Los Angeles Clippers (8-8, Last ranking: 15) – Elton Brand's points per game average has dropped from 25 last season to 18 this year. Sometimes, the Clips forget to throw him the ball inside.
13. Sacramento Kings (8-7, Last ranking: 12) – The Kings are hoping Mike Bibby's slump will end soon. He's shooting just 35 percent, but he had a poor November last year, too.
14. Indiana Pacers (9-9, Last ranking: 14) – Jamaal Tinsley is starting to pick up the pace. He's averaged 21 points and seven assists in his last three games.
15. Chicago Bulls (7-9, Last ranking: 24) – Four wins in a row, with more on the horizon: The Bulls host three Atlantic Division teams this week at the United Center.
16. New Orleans Hornets (8-8, Last ranking: 13) – How about Chris Paul's line in the loss to Chicago: 25 points, 18 assists and 11 boards.
17. Miami Heat (7-9, Last ranking: 19) – James Posey comes back just in time: He hit a buzzer-beating three to defeat Memphis in his second game back from a calf injury.
18. Atlanta Hawks (7-8, Last ranking: 17) – The beat goes on for Joe Johnson. He's scored 25 or more points 13 times this season.
19. New Jersey Nets (7-9, Last ranking: 20) – Nine of the Nets' next 10 games are at home, so now is the time to take control of the Atlantic Division.
20. Minnesota Timberwolves (7-9, Last ranking: 16) – Tough week ahead for the Wolves: Houston and Utah at home, plus a trip to Chicago.
21. Seattle SuperSonics (7-11, Last ranking: 17) – Three winnable home games coming up this week for the Sonics, who already find themselves seven games back in the Northwest.
22. Toronto Raptors (7-10, Last ranking: 27) – Don't look now, but the Raptors have won four of five. Chris Bosh and T.J. Ford are carrying the load.
23. Washington Wizards (6-10, Last ranking: 28) – The Wizards have yet to win a game on the road this season; they're 0-8.
24. Milwaukee Bucks (6-10, Last ranking: 25) – The Bucks are playing zone defense almost exclusively, but it's not working very well. They're giving up 104 points per game, and opponents are shooting 48 percent.
25. Boston Celtics (5-10, Last ranking: 22) – Think the Celtics depend on Paul Pierce? They haven't won a game in which he's scored fewer than 29 points.
26. Philadelphia 76ers (5-11, Last ranking: 21) – Chris Webber is back after missing six games with back problems, but will he make much of a difference? The Sixers have lost four straight and eight of nine.
27. Portland Trail Blazers (6-12, Last ranking: 23) – After that nifty 4-2 start, the Blazers have lost 10 of 12. Brandon Roy remains in street clothes due to a heel injury.
28. Charlotte Bobcats (5-12, Last ranking: 29) – No rest for the weary. The Bobcats have San Antonio, Houston and Phoenix this week.
29. New York Knicks (6-13, Last ranking: 26) – Apparently, Nate Robinson thought he was in another dunk contest during the Cleveland game. The problem is that, unlike All-Star Saturday night, he didn't get a do-over when he missed.
30. Memphis Grizzlies (4-12, Last ranking: 30) – Pau Gasol is apparently close to a return. He can't come back soon enough.

| POWER RANKINGS | |||||||
| Current | Team | Previous | |||||
![]() |
1 | Mavericks · Trends | 1 | ||||
| The 12-game winning streak is over, but that doesn't change the fact that Dallas has been the league's most consistent team the past few weeks. | |||||||
![]() |
2 | Spurs · Trends | 2 | ||||
| The Spurs will be careful with Manu Ginobili's bruised back, even though he says he's 100 percent. With the way Manu throws his body around, it's doubtful he's ever at full strength for very long. | |||||||
![]() |
3 | Jazz · Trends | 3 | ||||
| Young guards C.J. Miles and Ronnie Brewer are currently out of Jerry Sloan's rotation, but rookie Dee Brown has found minutes as a defensive pest with the second unit. It's clear the veteran coach doesn't want the kids getting complacent. | |||||||
![]() |
4 | Magic · Trends | 7 | ||||
|
Darko Milicic has steadily improved since the start of the season and is stringing up his share of strong performances off the Magic bench. Stop chuckling. It's true.
![]() |
5 | Lakers · Trends | 4 | ||||
![]() |
6 | Suns · Trends | 6 | ||||
| If you told Mike D'Antoni he would have Amare Stoudemire notching nightly double-doubles by early December, he wouldn't have believed you. Amare has exceeded all expectations in his recovery. | |||||||
![]() |
7 | Pistons · Trends | 8 | ||||
| Lindsey Hunter will probably be lost for a few weeks with Achilles and foot injuries. Expect Carlos Delfino to be the beneficiary of increased minutes, and sixth man Flip Murray will probably be tasked with more work. | |||||||
![]() |
8 | Rockets · Trends | 5 | ||||
| Maybe getting knocked into next week by Dikembe Mutombo's elbow will snap Tracy McGrady out of his shooting slump, now that he's over a mild concussion. | |||||||
![]() |
9 | Nuggets · Trends | 9 | ||||
| Carmelo Anthony is racking up Player of the Week awards. If the Nuggets can keep winning, he'll join buddies LeBron James and Dwyane Wade as MVP candidates. All that "he's getting left behind" talk now seems premature. | |||||||
![]() |
10 | Bulls · Trends | 18 | ||||
| The play of forwards Luol Deng and Andres Nocioni has helped cure the Bulls' woes, even helping mask Ben Wallace's continued struggles. | |||||||
![]() |
11 | Kings · Trends | 12 | ||||
| Brad Miller is getting back into playing shape, which means the Kings will soon have their full arsenal intact. This team has the talent to play exciting, selfless basketball if everyone keeps their egos in check. | |||||||
![]() |
12 | Clippers · Trends | 13 | ||||
| Chris Kaman's ankle looks healthy and he's starting to round into form. You can always tell whether Kaman is in shape and focused because he can put together flurries of energetic play. In the season's first months, that had been missing. | |||||||
![]() |
13 | Cavaliers · Trends | 11
| Larry Hughes' return to the lineup should come any day now. For a guy who hasn't spent a lot of time playing with his team, the Cavaliers sure do struggle in his absence. | |||||||
![]() |
14 | Heat · Trends | 19 | ||||
| Miami is hoping Jason Williams can supply some offensive punch now that he's back in the mix, but it's been a few years since "White Chocolate" has been asked to be an aggressive scorer. | |||||||
![]() |
15 | Nets · Trends | 15 | ||||
| Shooter Eddie House and rookie center Josh Boone have made their Nets debuts and soon should find a home in Lawrence Frank's rotation. Hopefully they can help pick up a bench that has offered little assistance. | |||||||
![]() |
16 | Warriors · Trends | 10 | ||||
| Jason Richardson's recurring knee problems look like they'll be an issue for the next few weeks, if not the rest of the season. He has only been able to display his trademark explosiveness in flashes. | |||||||
![]() |
17 | Pacers · Trends | 16 | ||||
| Now that the Pacers have fallen under .500, it should be mandatory for Al Harrington to shave that awful Mohawk of his. Do it to help turn the team's fortunes around. Any reason will do. | |||||||
![]() |
18 | Wizards · Trends | 21 | ||||
| Hammering the Mavericks at home offers proof of what the Wizards are capable of, but that's not going to get them anywhere unless they find consistency. Washington must use the performance as a springboard. | |||||||
![]() |
19 | Timberwolves · Trends | 16
| It looks like we'll finally get to see more of the Mike James/Randy Foye combination. What a novel concept. This just in: Pancakes and syrup blend well together. | |||||||
![]() |
20 | Hawks · Trends | 22 | ||||
| The remaining portion of the Hawks' West Coast swing will be telling. While it could spur them on to big things confidence-wise, it could also be deflating for a young team still trying to find its way. | |||||||
![]() |
21 | Hornets · Trends | 14 | ||||
| David West and Peja Stojakovic are out another week, so expect the Hornets' freefall to continue. | |||||||
![]() |
22 | Raptors · Trends | 26 | ||||
| Eight of the Raptors' next 10 December games will come outside of Canada, so it's important that they stay focused and avoid a collapse if they're to stick near the top of the struggling Atlantic. | |||||||
![]() |
23 | Bucks · Trends | 28 | ||||
| Bobby Simmons' heel might require season-ending surgery, dealing another blow to a Bucks team that has been cursed by injuries. Luckily, versatile guard Charlie Bell has done a nice job filling in of late. | |||||||
![]() |
24 | Knicks · Trends | 29 | ||||
| David Lee's relentless hustle is contagious. Even Eddy Curry has gotten into the act ... once in a while. Let's not get carried away. | |||||||
![]() |
25 | SuperSonics · Trends | 20
| Nick Collison joining Chris Wilcox in the starting lineup gives the Sonics another scoring option inside, but leaves a bench that already lacks offensive punch practically barren. | |||||||
![]() |
26 | Celtics · Trends | 23 | ||||
| If Kendrick Perkins is out for an extended period, the Celtics are going to have to pool all their resources and go seriously small. Who knows? It might just be an improvement. | |||||||
![]() |
27 | Bobcats · Trends | 27 | ||||
| It seems like the Bobcats can only beat the good teams on their schedule, so the challenges provided by the Spurs, Rockets and Suns this week aren't likely to scare them. | |||||||
![]() |
28 | 76ers · Trends | 25 | ||||
| Playing Andre Iguodala at the point sounds desperate, but if it somehow works out, you have to tip your hat to Maurice Cheeks for showing some innovation. | |||||||
![]() |
29 | Trail Blazers · Trends | 24
| Word is Jamaal Magloire is officially on the block. This should surprise exactly nobody. He never fit in with the Blazers, except as a pawn in a trade. | |||||||
![]() |
30 | Grizzlies · Trends | 30
| Brian Davis has been given a deadline of Jan. 15 to get his purchase of the Grizzlies approved by the NBA, or current owner Michael Heisley plans on keeping the team. Yes, the state of limbo the Grizzlies have been in seemingly all season is set to continue. | |||||||

Kidding Themselves <-
