Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 3:7~13 - To the Church in Philadelphia - A faithful church of little power, Receiving Only Praise from Jesus
Revelation 3:7 – (2) Who holds the key of David, what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open
☞ Revelation 3:7 - "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. (NIV); And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; (KJV); "Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open.(1) / (1)Isa 22.22 (NLT)
○ “These are the words of him who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open”(NIV) is a quote from <Isaiah> 22:22. In <Isaiah> 22:15~25, there were words of LORD God, saying, “LORD God will depose Shebna from his official position”. Shebna was in charge of the treasury and responsibility of the City of Jerusalem, but Shebna dug a grave without permission and made a resting place in the rock. With such reasons, LORD God drove him out, and replaced him with Eliakim son of Hilkiah. And LORD God says in <Isaiah> 22:22 as follows:
☞ <Isaiah> 22:22 - I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. (NIV); And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. (KJV); I will give him the key to the house of David - the highest position in the royal court. When he opens doors, no one will be able to close them; when he closes doors, no one will be able to open them. (NLT)
○ In other words, Eliakim was placed as the palace administrator of the City of Jerusalem. The City of Jerusalem was built by King David (reign BC 1,010~BC 970), the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel (BC 1,050~BC 930). Therefore, it was expressed as the house of David, and the key to the house was given to Eliakim. Therefore, ‘when Eliakim opens the door of the house of David, no one will close, and when he shuts, no one will open’. It means that there are responsibility and authority.
○ Maybe, the Christians (or members) of Philadelphia church knew this Old Testament, <Isaiah> 22:22, line by line. The fact that Jesus described himself as 'who holds the key of David, who opens and no one shuts, who shuts and no one opens' confirms that 'I am the Messiah of the Old Testament that you all know'.
