BELFAST — For the first time, Sweden will supply Ukraine with two ASC 890 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft as part of a new SEK 13.3 billion ($1.25 billion) military aid package, the Nordic nation’s largest to date.
In a translated statement today, the Swedish Ministry of Defence said that the Saab-made surveillance aircraft will offer Ukraine “an entirely new capability for airborne radar reconnaissance and combat control against targets in the air and at sea” and strengthen Kyiv’s long range detection and targeting capabilities.
Russia continues to bombard Ukraine with ballistic and cruise missile and drone strikes, with Kharkiv in particular suffering sustained attacks.
The ASC 890 aircraft, known to Saab as the 340, are fitted with Erieye radars, based on Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology and can be operated to detect and track targets “quickly with high precision and a high update rate,” according to Saab company literature.
To make up for its own “temporary decline” in AEW&C capability once the ASC 890 are delivered, Stockholm also said it will acquire an additional Saab GlobalEye platform — making three overall — and bring forward delivery of the two units already on order. A first plane is currently scheduled for delivery in 2027, though a new date was not specifically disclosed.
“We note the statement from the Swedish Government about advancing the GlobalEye order Saab received in June 2022 as well as its stated interest in ordering a third aircraft,” said the manufacturer in a statement. “At this point we have not received an order for a third GlobalEye from Sweden. Deliveries of the two previously ordered GlobalEye aircraft are currently ongoing and we have a close dialogue with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) about how to best to meet their requirements.”
Sweden did not say when the ASC 890 aircraft will be delivered to Ukraine, but they are set to be deployed alongside F-16 fourth-generation fighter jets, due to be supplied by Belgium, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands, in support of an air force capability coalition for Ukraine.
Pal Jonson, Sweden’s Minister of Defence, told press today that after “intensive discussions” with countries from the coalition, it was decided supplies of the ASC 890 aircraft “would have the largest impact on Ukrainian air defense,” per a Bloomberg report.
Sweden has so far declined to send Saab Gripen C/D fighter jets, but Jonson reportedly told the Swedish news agency TT on Tuesday that he had been advised by countries from the coalition to wait so Ukraine can focus on introduction of the F-16.

“I’m very impressed with how Ukraine has defended itself against Russian aggression, and Sweden as a nation is very supportive, we are sending a lot of equipment including arms,” Tommy Petersson, deputy commander of the Swedish Air Force told reporters last week.
He said it would be a “political decision” for Gripen jets to be supplied to Ukraine, but noted that the move would be feasible and that Sweden has a “long standing tradition” of exporting the aircraft.
Jonson also noted on X (formerly Twitter) that Sweden’s Defence Research Agency will be “tasked” with supporting Ukraine to create its own defense research institute.
Sweden’s latest aid package to Ukraine also covers supplies of all of the country’s PBV 302 armored tracked personnel carriers so Kyiv can reconstruct damaged bridges, US made Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and “resources” to maintain previously supplied equipment.
In a post on X, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the new Swedish weapons and said they are “critical to our warriors.”
Since the start of the war against Russia, Stockholm has provided SEK 43.5 billion ($4 billion) in military aid and support to Ukraine.

Military support package 16 to Ukraine – new capability to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence and support to meet its prioritised needs
Published 29 May 2024
Today, 29 May, the Government is presenting its 16th and largest military support package to Ukraine to date since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. Sweden will provide Ukraine with a completely new capability to strengthen its collective air defence. The package, which will be part of an upcoming additional amending budget, amounts to SEK 13.3 billion and will meet Ukraine’s prioritised needs.
Ukraine’s needs remain immense and Russia is currently putting pressure on several fronts, intensifying its air strikes against both military and civilian objects. The Government will therefore provide Ukraine with another record military support package. Sweden’s support will contribute to strengthening Ukraine’s joint military capability.
Sweden will send Airborne Surveillance and Control aircraft (ASC 890) to Ukraine and thus strengthen its air defence capability. Sweden will donate its entire stock of armoured tracked personnel carriers (PBV 302) to support the reconstruction of new Ukrainian brigades. Sweden will also donate artillery ammunition and resources for maintenance of previously donated materiel.
Since Russia’s brutal war of aggression began in February 2022, Sweden has provided SEK 43.5 billion in support.
Air defence
The support package will include Airborne Surveillance and Control aircraft (ASC 890), which will provide Ukraine with a completely new capability against both airborne and maritime targets. Ukraine’s capability to identify and engage targets at long range will be strengthened. The package will also include a holistic solution that involves training, technical equipment and methodological support for air surveillance and command and control.
The donation will entail a temporary decrease of Sweden’s defence capability, which will be addressed by procuring additional S 106 GlobalEye aircraft and advancing previous orders for two new GlobalEye aircraft.
To further strengthen Ukraine’s air defence, the support package will also include the Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (RB 99-AMRAAM), which can be used on aircraft and in ground-based air defence systems. The missiles will be redesigned to suit ground-based anti-aircraft systems. Meanwhile, Sweden will purchase new missiles to replace the donated ones.
Ammunition
Ukrainian field units are short on artillery ammunition. The package will include an addition of 155 mm artillery shells to increase Ukraine’s capability to combat Russian units in the depths of the battlefield.
The donation will entail a temporary decrease of Sweden’s defence capability, which will be addressed by procuring replacement grenades.
Strengthened reconstruction of new Ukrainian brigades
The Ukrainian army is organising a number of new brigades and therefore needs armoured vehicles for infantry companies. Therefore, Sweden will donate its entire stock of PBV 302, including spare parts, maintenance equipment and ammunition.
The donation will entail a temporary decrease of Sweden’s defence capability, which will be addressed by procuring replacement armoured vehicles.
Financial support, satellite communications, maintenance, tank vehicles and research
The 16th military support package will also contain the following:
