Spring in the Ancient Palace
Jung Ha-sun
Spring arrives at the ancient palace, brightening a thousand years of light,
Stirring my heart as it gently awakens from its winter slumber.
Setting my shoes upon the breeze, I step out with a light, airy tread.
Moss flies back to the ancient blue royal palace of old,
Yearning for the ancestors who weave the thread of a millennium,
And the colors of Dancheong on the pillars breathe, continuing their life.
Sunlight seeps into each groove of the roof tiles, breathing life inside,
While the wind polishes the pillars, tracing the grain of a thousand years.
The delicate Dancheong at my fingertips revives forgotten memories.
As the sun in the east rises high into the mid-sky,
The main roof ridge wriggles as if rolling a sacred dragon ball,
Searing into today's sky, its tail striking with powerful vigor.

Printemps dans le Vieux Palais
Jung Ha-sun
English Translation of Commentary & Criticism
Exegesis (Interpretation): This modern Sijo poem sings of the depth of history and the revival of vitality through the scenery of spring visiting an ancient palace. In the first stanza, it captures the poet's fluttering heart welcoming spring after winter, along with light steps heading toward the palace. In the second and third stanzas, ancient relics such as moss, the Dancheong (traditional multicolor paintwork) on the pillars, and roof tiles gain vibrant life under the sunlight and breeze, sensory-describing how they carry forward a thousand years of time. Finally, in the fourth stanza, under the sun high in the sky, the dynamic spirit of the palace's main roof ridge is metaphorically likened to a dragon rolling a sacred pearl and soaring—symbolizing that past history continues to breathe powerfully today.
Literary Criticism: Spring in the Ancient Palace is an exceptional piece that breathes dynamic vitality into the static image of an ancient palace. While faithfully adhering to the traditional Sijo rhythm, it revives a thousand years of time with a modern sensibility by leveraging vivid visual and tactile imagery ("the delicate Dancheong", "polishes the pillars"). In particular, the expression in the final stanza—metamorphosing the roof ridge into the lively movement of a dragon—simultaneously conveys historical pride and a powerful dynamism toward a new era.
